My Sister’s Transformation – Part 1
This is the day I remember everything starting. It was the summer before my little sister Emily went off to college.
She’d always been tall for her age and thin as a rail.
Now its hard to picture her like that. Looking back on old high school photos it’s impossible to believe its the same person.
Anyway this was the summer my sister decided to get into shape. This is how it all started.

My sister Emily came up to me while I was watching TV.
"Can you show me how to use some of your weightlifting equipment? I want to get into shape before I start college.”
I enjoyed worked out myself and had a good gym setup in my basement.
"Sure” I said “Working out would definitely be good for you. What inspired you?”
“I’m just tired of being so weak.” She said. “Look at this.”
She rolled up her right sleeve to reveal a toothpick thin arm. She gave a strong flex. I could see her forearms shaking at the exertion. However, her arm was just a shapeless as before.
“See that’s just sad. I know I can do better.” She said.
"Okay let do it." I said. “When do you want to start?”
“Right now.” She replied. “I’m really excited about this and want to get started.”

“Okay,” I said “Let’s do some basic exercises just to gauge your general fitness level and we’ll take it from there.”
“Let’s warm up a bit. Then well see how much your body can handle now.”
We then ran through some exercises to test her upper body strength, core, legs, and cardio.
Since this was really her first time she unsurprisingly struggled through these first exercises.
I felt I gave her a good introduction. At the end she was exhausted.
“That... was... fun.” said Emily struggling to catch her breath between the words. Her legs were shaking from the exertion of the day. “I just need to sit down a bit.” she said collapsing to the floor.
“I’m really out of shape.” She rolled up her sleeve and flexed her shaking hand. It was only the first day so of course her arm looked as shapeless as before.
“We’ll I’ve got a lot of work to do. Can I see yours?”
I like to keep myself in shape and proudly flexed my bicep.
Emily eyes grew in awe. “Wow no wonder those exercises were so easy for you.” She reached up and I watched amused as she felt it.
She looked up determinedly and said “Thanks brother this is great motivation. This is going to be a great new hobby for me.”
“Before my first year of college I’m going to get into the best shape of my life. It’s going to be a whole new me.”
Emily had been at it for over a month now and she had grown more confident in the gym. She took the basics I showed her and started to look up different workouts and programs online to build her regimen.
Today I walked in on her doing some leg raises in the gym.
She noticed me come in and excitedly said “Check out what I can do now!”
She quickly got down and cranked out 10 push ups with good form. Spent from the effort of this in addition to her previous workout she plopped down flat on the floor on the tenth.
This was an impressive improvement for the amount of time. Not too long ago she was struggling with the beginner on your knees push ups.
I noticed some notes she had off to the side. “Looks like you’re taking this seriously. Be sure you don’t injure yourself.” I cautioned.
“Yeah, I’ve been doing a lot of research online.” She said. “I have a routine down to hit all the major muscle groups. I have a routine that especially focuses on strengthening my core. From what I’ve read that’ll be a good base to minimize injuries.”
Again I was impressed this was more methodical than I ever was in my workouts. As I left she got back to her leg raises.
As I was walking down the hall I saw Emily throw a bunch of her clothes into a box.
“I’m donating my old clothes. None of them fit me anymore and I need a new wardrobe. I’ve put it off too long” She replied. “Working out is great but it comes at the consequence of needing new clothes.”
“Really? All your clothes don’t fit?” I asked. It now made sense why she was always wearing sweatpants.
“Yeah look at these jeans I’m wearing now. A while back I bought a bigger size on accident now look.” She said.
I now noticed the jeans she was wearing were obviously too small. The zipper was all the way down and it was impossible fasten the top button.
This was a bit of a shock barely two months of working out and her over sized jeans were already too small.
“On the plus side though look at this.” She said and lifted up her shirt.
I took me a moment to process and believe what I was seeing. No wonder none of her clothes would fit.
Two months ago she had a completely shapeless stomach. Now she had a very athletic looking four pack abs. From the looks of it there was no fat on her stomach. Her pants just no longer fit because of some impressive looking muscle.
I’ve heard of easy beginner gains but this was something else. These looked like the abs of a four year varsity high school athlete. Not my sister two months of working out. She even had visible obliques popping out.
She dropping her shirt and turned around.
“And look at this I have an ass now!” She exclaimed turning around.
Even though it was my sister I couldn’t help but notice her formerly flat behind had some real shape.
“Oh yeah and this.” She said rolling up her shirt sleeve.
I was again in shock. She no longer had twig arms. There was some obvious meat on her forearms and even before flexing her arms were visibly thicker.
She gave her arm a flex and a real visible bicep emerged. It was the height of a small lime but what was really impressive is it seemed to stretch the length of her arm.
Not believing what I was seeing I reached out and gave it a light squeeze. Yup it was real and impressively pretty solid.
I let go and she let her sleeve fall.
“Well I guess I should get back to it.” She said and continued to sort through clothes.
Walking down the hall I was still reeling from what I saw. Where had all that muscle come from in two months? Surely this can’t keep up I thought a bit jealous of my sister’s gains.
I realized I was worried if this kept up she would eventually be stronger than me. My little sister! The thought felt emasculating and I convinced myself it was beginner gains that would be impossible to keep up.
I resolved to be more serious about my own workout routine.
I walked into the gym just as Emily was finishing her workout for the day.
Tomorrow she would fly out to begin her freshman year in college.
"Hey David" she called out. She pulled the towel she was wearing over her face wiping the sweat away and took a swig of the jug of water she had.
We hadn’t run into each other much the rest of the summer.
"Are you going to keep training when you get to college?" I asked.
"Are you kidding me!" she said excitedly "This is the best decision I ever made. I didn't know it was possible to have so much energy. I feel better than I have in my entire life. Of course I’m going to keep it up."
She was wearing a slightly baggy shirt and sweatpants so it was impossible to notice how much she’d grown. I did notice she had some visible veins and striations popping out of her forearms which did look bigger.
Now I was curious to see my sister’s progress. There was a different energy about her.
"Remember when I thought I'd never be able to do one pull up?" she walked over and jumped onto the pull up machine. Taking a deep breath Emily steadied herself and slowly cranked out 10 pull ups with great form before dropping to the floor.
I’m ashamed to admit that at that moment I was jealous of my sister. It seemed that progress seemed to be coming so easy for her.
“Check it out.” She said lifting up her shirt.
I was floored by what I saw. Her progress hadn’t stalled at all. The four pack I saw earlier this month looked even more defined. Her abdominal ridges were deeper and there was even the outline of a full six pack coming it. Her obliques were even more defined and most impressive there wasn’t a trace of fat. It was pure muscle growth. Once her six pack really came in it would look better than mine. I was reeling.
“It’s impossible for me to buy clothes.” She lamented. “Remember when you saw me earlier this month? I’ve put half an inch onto my waist since then. Fortunately it looks like none of that was fat but my pants don’t fit again! I’m going to have to wear sweatpants for a while till things stabilize.”
I was still taking this in when I hear Emily exclaim “And check this out." She rolled up her sleeve and quickly gave her arm a flex.
If the progress she had to this point was amazing this was downright unbelievable and it took me a moment to regain my composure. In a matter of weeks the small lime had grown into a small lemon.
Like before the base of her bicep extended the length of her arm giving it a sturdy look. There was no fat to speak of on her arm so every bump and striation was easily visible. Even small bump of her developing triceps were visible.
This was more than beginner gains. She didn’t seem to be slowing down.
“Look at this!” She said excitedly. “My arms went from nothing to a real ball of muscle.” She twisted her clenched fist around making her arm come alive.
I felt guilty again that I was jealous of my sister. And insecure that she would rapidly become stronger than me.
“My girlfriends are all jealous. None of them can squeeze it at all.”
Surely her friends must be weak I thought. A few months ago her biceps had all the firmness of a wet sponge. How much difference could a few months really make.
I didn’t have to wait long to find out.
“I love the feeling. It makes me feel… powerful.” She said giving her right bicep another pump. “Here try for yourself.”
Still partly convinced this was some kind of trick I reached for my sister's right bicep. As soon as my hand made contact I knew it was definitely real. I gave it a little testing squeeze.
It was impressively solid. I could only wonder where all this came from in a few short months as I continued to give probing squeezes.
“Come on.” She encouraged. “Really try.”
“Are you sure?” I asked as I started to squeeze a bit harder still impressed by the firmness.
“Yeah really try. My girlfriends can’t do anything to them at all.” She said with a hint of pride.
Still incredulous I started to increase my grip. I felt a bit of relief as her lemon sized bicep started to compress and give in.
As I stated to complement her. “I can see why your friends...”
I looked up and saw the real look of determination on my sister’s face.
“But...” I said starting to decrease the pressure of my grip.
“No! Keep going I can push this back.” She clenched her fist harder and I noticed her arm started to shake a bit from the exertion. I felt my reduced grip pushed out a bit.
Curious to see where this would go I rapidly increased my grip. Her lemon sized bicep continued to provide surprising resistance but to my ego’s relief I felt it slowly gave way and my fingers dug in. As her besieged bicep finally gave in Emily let out a yelp of pain. I quickly released my grip.
“Sorry about that.” I apologized feeling guilty at hurting my sister.
“No don’t feel bad. That’s exactly what I wanted to see. I really thought I could hold that off though. We’ll just wait till you see the next three months.” She said while stretching her arm.
“I’ve put on 25 pounds of muscle in just three months. Normally I’d be worried but as you just saw none of that is fat. Imagine what another three months will do.”
“You want to put on even more muscle?” I asked feeling uneasy about my sister’s growing strength.
“You bet. I wouldn’t have thought it before but I love the way my body looks and feels with muscle. Also everyone says I’m really strong for a girl. I want to keep pushing till people just say I’m strong period.”
“Even if it’s just beginner gains like people have said I’m going to push it as far as I can go. I’m excited to see what the next few months bring.”

After this incident I couldn’t shake the insecurity that my sister was rapidly becoming stronger than me. Her beginner gains may have been the best I’ve seen but there was no way anyone could keep up that pace. She would inevitably hit a biological plateau.
Nevertheless I resolved to rededicate myself to the gym once Emily went off to college for her freshman year.
Emily had been away at college for over a month and I’d managed to keep my insecurity at bay.
I’d been diligent about my workouts. Overall I was just completely focused on what I was doing.
I’m not a big social media person, but I occasionally check it. That night before bed I was scrolling through my feed and saw a post from Emily. It was a general motivational post.
I was curious what else was there and scrolled through her feed looking for a hint of her workouts.
I found a short video announcing she was going on a 30 day squat challenge.
She showed the plan she would follow promising to chronicle her results on social media.
It didn’t look like she bothered to update this.
From the looks of her videos and pictures it looked like she was about the same size as when she left. Though it was hard to really tell.
I was a bit relieved. Just like I thought beginner gains but she was reaching her natural limits.
I still felt weird being insecure like this.
Another notable video was posted a few day before thanksgiving. It started auto playing in my feed. Curious I unmuted it.
“...my first semester is almost over. There’s a stereotype that this is when you again the infamous freshman 15.” she said. “Well that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Check this out.”
She leaned forward and re-positioned the camera upwards.
“15 plus pounds of muscle baby.” She exclaimed lifting up her shirt.
Even with the awkward angle and bad lighting it was obvious she’d packed on muscle. I had to pause the video to process what I was seeing. She didn’t just fill out a little she looked downright ripped. She undoubtedly had a full six pack. In six months. What was going on!
“I know it’s a cliche, but remember that muscle weighs more than fat. And obviously it also weighs more than just skin and bones.”
Even with the video quality it was obvious as she moved that even without flexing there was a bulge to her shoulders and arms. She eventually signed off wishing everyone a happy thanksgiving.
The old insecurity had come back and I resolved to hit the gym harder.
During the school’s winter break I saw a new post from Emily.
She had taken up both boxing and kick boxing and posted a video of her sparring with a bag.
These used to be hobbies of mine in high school. I’d fallen out of practice so it was weird seeing my sister go at it with pretty good form.
She was wearing athletic shorts and it was clear her legs had grown. Watching her make her way around the bag they looked formidable.
I also noticed her glutes had grown since the end of summer and looked impressive in those shorts.
It felt weird admiring my sister’s ass like that but I was hard to ignore.
All through winter and Emily posted more frequent workout videos.
“Hello everyone I just got back from my boxing session.”
“I was just thinking how disappointing it is that I’m the only girl in our boxing club. I just want to let everyone know don’t be put off by something because it’s not what a girl should do. I was overwhelmed at first but know I feel like I’m really on the verge of competing with some of the guys. Remember you won’t get better if you don’t try.”
I ended that night with a hard workout in the gym.
Today’s the day Emily comes back for summer break and I’m getting ready to pick her up at the airport. She stayed at school through the winter and spring breaks so this was going to be the first time I’d seen her since last summer.
