40-year-old Liza (Sutton Foster) passes herself off as 26 to land a job in the field of her dreams. Now she just has to make sure no one discovers her secret.
As she settles into her new 26-year-old life, Liza is tasked with marketing an older writer to a younger audience. And though she has a perfect date with Josh, she tries to convince herself to aim for someone more age-appropriate.
Liza struggles with the anxiety of sex with Josh and gets a little help from Maggie. At work, Kelsey pulls out all the stops to land a hot new author, while Diana dips her toe into the online dating pool.
Liza tries to keep Josh at arm's length, but a surprise run-in leaves her reevaluating her feelings for him. Kelsey asks Liza to keep her in check as she celebrates her new author acquisition with innumerable shots of tequila.
After saving Kelsey from a potentially humiliating situation in the ladies' room, Liza joins Kelsey's inner circle, neglecting her friendship with Maggie at the worst possible time. Meanwhile, Diana's excited by the arrival of Charles, Empirical's handsome and potentially soon-to-be-divorced publisher.
Liza gets the chance to prove herself when Diana tasks her with running a book launch party for a notoriously demanding, exhausting author. Maggie runs into an old crush, who's finally single, while Kelsey starts to fall for her new author, who's not.
When her ex comes up short on her daughter's tuition payment, Liza has to swallow her pride to earn some quick cash without arousing suspicion from Josh. Kelsey continues to blur the line between editor and mistress with her prize author.
As the grind of 20-something life continues to wear Liza down, she gets a glimpse into a more age-appropriate world when her publisher needs her to babysit. Kelsey's affair with her author finally comes to a head at an award ceremony.
Liza returns to her New Jersey book club hoping to incite interest in an unpublished author she discovered at work. Meanwhile, Josh freezes Liza out when she insults his intelligence.
After a bedbug scare forces Liza into some uncomfortable and illuminating sleeping arrangements, she struggles to close the deal on her first literary find.
Liza learns of a potential new career option while Lauren throws the outlandish bat mitzvah she never got to have. Kelsey deals with the fall-out from her affair.
Liza's lies come to a disastrous head on multiple fronts, threatening to ruin her professionally and romantically.

She went on to say that she wished the show "had a longer first season not just because I liked it, but more because it's featherweight, and as its current run stands, might have been better off as a feature-length rom-com." Megan Garber reviewed the show for The Atlantic saying, "Younger, a fairy tale fit for basic cable, is a treacly confection of a show: witty but not wise, delightful but not deep. And yet—like its creator Darren Star’s previous exploration of age and sexuality and identity in a tumultuous time, Sex and the City—it offers, almost in spite of itself, deep insights into the culture of the moment."
Tom Conroy of Media Life Magazine criticized the show mainly for portraying Sutton Foster's character Liza with "early-middle-age cluelessness", featuring "particularly silly" publishing-industry details and presenting "a relationship between an educated 40-year-old mother and a 26-year-old college dropout" that, in his belief, "has nowhere to go."
But Jonathan Alexander writes in the Los Angeles Review of Books that "Younger works in part because it plays to both millennials, who are often portrayed as hip and hardworking, creative and generous, as well as to late Gen-Xers who are facing a corporate and consumer world that's seemingly forgotten them in its drive to cater to the needs, tastes, and interests of a younger (and numerically larger) generation."
Darcie Wilder of Vice wrote in her review: "Younger is unexpectedly addictive, nothing short of extremely soothing and pleasurable to watch. It's a bedtime story that's supposed to lull but is too engaging to ever actually let you doze off. Usually when I binge, there's a hard out when I finally get caught up to real time, entering the headspace of its regular audience and eventually losing interest—but that hasn't happened with Younger, not yet."
