Anna Yuzhakova takes her laptop computer with her to the restaurant car. She wants to show her international visitor the many charms of Siberian beauties. They are the result, she says, of years of mixed marriages by citizens from different republics of the former Soviet Union.
Anna is a scout. She discovers new talents for the Noah Models agency in St. Petersburg.
She is herself a former model. Four times a year she crosses her native region by train searching for the next top models, the ones who will one day strut the catwalks of Paris or New York.
Her travelling companion, Stephane Hababou, watches the photos of would-be models scroll across the screen. He’s also a scout. He represents the prestigious Marilyn agency in Paris.
It’s his first trip to Siberia. Hababou says it’s the best way for him to find new prospects ahead of his competition.
There’s not a moment to waste. Anna and Stephane stop in every large city of the region, holding a casting call that is open to all.
About 50 teen girls in black undergarments and stiletto heels greet Anna and Stephane at every stop. Some move nervously. Others proudly show off their curves.
The presence of this visitor from Paris ramps up the pressure. Everyone knows Hababou holds the key to a possible career abroad. It’s an opportunity to follow both an American and French dream, a chance to escape the daily drudgery of life in Siberia.
Anna invites Marina Korotkova to step forward. The 17-year-old barely has the time to take two steps before a cutting remark welcomes her into the world of modelling, even if pronounced under the guise of humour. “Marina is a little overweight.” At 93 centimetres, her hips are too wide. The visitors still take a few photos and recommend she go on a diet.
Russia’s largest modelling school is in Novosibirsk. It’s a unique breeding ground for girls who start training as early as age 10 or 12. They learn fashion photography techniques and how to sway their hips on a catwalk.
Fifteen-year-old Kristina Churina, a recent graduate, catches Stephane Hababou’s eye. If she loses a little weight, she could end up in Paris within the year, modeling the creations of top designers.
But few are chosen. Anna selects about 30 young women during each of her Siberian scouting trips. Only a fraction of them will ever end up with real modelling careers.
To be ready to seize the opportunity if presented with it, Kristina has been taking intensive English courses. She also has a plan B. She’s studying tourism and hopes to one day manage a large hotel.

Siberia is known around the world for its frigid temperatures. But in the world of fashion, the region is famous for being home to the most beautiful women in the world.
The measuring tape is king. Minimum height: 172 centimetres (5 feet, 6 inches). Maximum hips: 90 centimetres (35.4 inches).
Casting calls are open to all and attract about 60 hopeful young women every time they are held.
The measuring tape is unforgiving. With hips measuring 93 centimetres (36.6 inches), Marina Korotkova is considered “a little fat.”
Stephane Hababou, from the Marilyn agency in Paris, has come to Siberia to find the most promising beauties before his rivals do.
Anna Yuzhakova (centre), herself a former model, visits Siberia four times a year on behalf of the Noah modeling agency in St. Petersburg.
Anna discovers 30 to 40 fresh and interesting faces every month.
Anastasia Akhmameteva catches the eye of Stephane Hababou. Her ticket to Paris is within reach.
For the ones left behind, the rejection is often brutal.
15-year-old Kristina Churina just graduated from Novosibirsk’s modelling school and has caught the attention of the Paris agency.
But Stephane Hababou hesitates about Kristina: “If she loses weight, we’ll see see how she changes.”
Siberia is considered a modelling reservoir, thanks to ethnic mixing.
A little powder, and barely pubescent girls turn into femmes fatales.
A fashion show after the casting call allows scouts to observe the models in real conditions.
For many young women from small villages, modelling offers a chance to travel and earn a lot of money.

What a hilarious short ! professional actors get to flash their schtick as Larry's co-workers, pals, parents, and employers, while Larry - who lost his job "for visiting a pornographic web site on my office computer where women have sex with farm animals" - tries to find employment and some shred of dignity, only to find himself on a quick downward spiral as his reputation follows him, no matter what advice or job leads he follows. How Larry loses his job, girlfriend, and apartment in one fell swoop sets the tone of this 17 minute farce; and continues as he moves into his parents' basement - what new humiliation must Larry endure before ... peace of mind ? Make sure you catch the end all the way to the credits, and no, that's not Catherine Keener but her sister, Elizabeth, and kudos to the writer/director, Collin Friesen.

The demonstration in Yekaterinburg reinforces claims that Russia is reviving Soviet-style demonstrations of force under Vladimir Putin
Schoolgirls in Russia have been made to march through deep snow to demonstrate their patrotism, in a parade which has provoked outrage.
The demonstration in Yekaterinburg reinforces claims that Russia is reviving Soviet-style demonstrations of force under Vladimir Putin .
The shivering girls in the video, who were wearing skirts, are believed to be between 10 and 13, and were made to show off their marching skills despite a freak late April snow storm.
The schoolgirls - taking part in the contest ‘Sons and Daughters of Motherland’ organised by Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu, a close Putin ally - marched in summer shoes, white shirts, forage caps and light tights though ankle deep snow.
Boys wore light shirts and khaki trousers.
The shivering girls took the salute in front of military officers dressed in winter uniforms.
“I’d love to know surnames of these officers,” said Yekaterinburg resident Inna Nikulina.
“I can only imagine what they do in real army if they push children to march in their summer kits in snow. What swines.”
Another critic Ramilya Allayarova said: “I can’t stand the sight of warmly-dressed men watching girls marching in snow.
“How on earth do they send children to perform outside in such weather?”
Another said: “Are we at war? Whoever needs these Soviet-style drill competitions?
“How can anyone explain kicking these children outdoors, not properly dressed, into snow?”
A video spread on social media with a male voice saying: "This is a Russian Patriot competition.
“So girls dressed in summer pumps, skirts, shirts, tights stand in snow.. or, finally they move... in this kind of weather. This is how Russia grows its patriots, by taking girls out in such weather.” The contest culminates in a ‘March of the Victors’ spectacle in Moscow in October.
Olga Rogulina, contest organiser, said an alternative venue could not be used because the floor was broken.
“We felt really sorry for children, of course,” she said, claiming they wanted to march and drill in the snow.
“They were issued with thermal underwear,” she said.

While YouTube tries to protect children f rom disturbing and obscene content , people who enjoy watching kids star in their own videos are still free to write whatever they want in those videos’ comment sections.
As the ORKA YouTube channel points out in a video that has accumulated nearly 150,000 views in two days, there are large numbers of videos starring children that have attracted commenters that seem to be attracted to those children.
Case in point: a video by a girl who goes by the name of MacCartney Kerr. She has less than 5,000 subscribers, but her video titled “Part 1 of trying on my summer clothes” has accumulated more than 520,000 views and apparently keeps showing up in the recommended section of people who might or might not be interested in watching content like this. The video is basically a girl who appears to be a pre-teen trying on clothes. It seems pretty innocent until you scroll down to the comments section.
In the short video, the girl shows off her bare midriff, and she dances around briefly in a tight dress. That apparently was enough to draw comments like “You look so beautiful in that dress” and “That black dress looks amazing on you, great figure.”
One commenter linked a time stamp where the girl nearly showed her undergarments and instructs viewers to slow down the video to .25 of its normal speed.
A number of commenters are asking the girl to take down the video, wondering where her parents are, and calling out the “pedos” and “sickos” who enjoy watching the content.
MacCartney has other videos in which she plays with slime, shows off her bedroom, and explains her daily makeup routine. None of them have drawn close to the number of page views of her summer clothes vlog.
If you click on her content, plenty of other suggestive videos starring children show up in the recommended sidebar. That includes a video called “Showing my shower routine” and another one called “How to do a cartwheel” done by a young girl wearing a skirt. All of them have hundreds of thousands of views.
Other videos that appear to be Russian show thumbnails of young girls in bathing suits in the bathtub, and another vlog in which a young girl tells about her nighttime routine has accumulated more than 1.3 million views.
On many of these videos, the comment sections have been disabled, so we don’t have to read the inner thoughts of those who might be pedophiliacs. But in one of the Russian videos, one commenter wrote, via Google Translate, “What a shame when she grows up.” And another commented, “Nice. Nipslip.”

YouTube did not immediately respond to a Daily Dot request for comment on Wednesday morning. But it seems clear that protecting the children who spend time on the platform is not yet—or might never be—a job that is officially done.
Update 11:30am CT : YouTube responded to the Daily Dot by reiterating that content that endangers minors is unacceptable and that it aggressively enforces its policies against videos and comments that sexualize or exploit children. YouTube also pointed to its blog post in 2017 that announced how it was toughening its policies that would make children and families safer, including “a combination of automated systems and human flagging and review to remove inappropriate sexual or predatory comments on videos featuring minors.”
The platform also made sure to remind people that its terms of service state that the site is for people who are at least 13 years old, and if it’s determined that a user is not of that age, their channel will be terminated.
“Any content—including comments—that endangers minors is abhorrent and we have clear policies prohibiting this on YouTube,” a YouTube spokesperson told the Daily Dot. “When we become aware of new and evolving patterns of abuse, we take swift action in line with our policies. This includes terminating channels and reporting abuse to local law enforcement via NCMEC (the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children). Last quarter, we removed hundreds of thousands of individual videos and over 25,000 channels for violating our child safety policies. We are always working on new solutions, such as improving our machine learning classifiers to better identify inappropriate comments. We’re committed to getting this right and recognize there’s still more to do.”
