In September 2000 my daughter was nearly 13 and had just started secondary school. She had always got on well with other children and worked hard. But after a couple of months things began to change. She started wearing lots of make-up. The school was a stone's throw away, but friends began calling for her as early as 7.30am. Next my older daughter spotted her hanging about in the local park with some lads from school who introduced the girls they befriended to older boys and men. I was very alarmed. Then she started missing certain lessons, sometimes whole days.
When she started disappearing overnight, I trawled the streets looking for her. I had no control over her. Sometimes she would say she was going to have an early night, then she'd turn on the shower and climb out the bathroom window. Once when she disappeared, I went through the park looking for her and asked a teenage boy if he'd seen her. I was horrified when he said, "Yes, all the prostitutes hang out by the bowling green."
I confronted my daughter. "That's not true," she said. "Those boys are my boyfriends."
As far as she was concerned, she was doing what she wanted to do and I was hindering her. Money didn't seem to be changing hands, but the girls were getting drink and drugs and mobile phones. The men flattered them into believing they loved them as part of a process of grooming them to have sex with lots of different men, some in their 30s and 40s. People ask me why I use the word "grooming" rather than referring to them as paedophiles, but most of these men haven't been convicted.
I felt as if my daughter was sliding away from me and I'd never be able to get her back. Every minute of every day became a nightmare. I couldn't eat, sleep or function properly, and I could see no way back. Every time she disappeared, I thought I'd never see her alive again. If a girl is over 13, she has to be the complainant in a case of sexual assault. Because this was happening outside the house, there was nothing I could do. The worst thing, as a mother, was not being able to prevent my daughter from being abused.
At the end of 2001, a year after her first disappearance, I put her into care. She didn't want to go, but I could no longer cope. My lowest point was the first time I visited her. Seeing her and having to walk away was unbearable. Everything exploded while she was in care, and I had a breakdown.
My nephew killed himself unexpectedly during this time. My daughter and I attended the funeral, and were both extremely upset. Afterwards, I took my daughter firmly by the shoulders and said to her, "You'll never know how many times I thought I'd be going to your funeral."
Then I walked away. She seemed to turn some sort of corner that day, and so did I. She started to realise what she was doing to herself and I could see for the first time that she needed me. I think I had to feel as low as it was possible to feel before I found the strength to fight what was happening to her and other girls.
I started campaigning with Ann Cryer, the MP for Keighley, for a change in the law to make hearsay evidence admissible in grooming cases, a change we secured last year. I'm proud of what I achieved and my daughter is proud of me, too.
After two years in care, she came back to live with me, went back to college, got qualifications. At times she feels down about what happened to her, which she now recognises as abuse. Last year Channel 4 made a programme about the grooming issue in this area and, although some white men were involved, the BNP hijacked it as a race issue: Asians exploiting white girls. I was furious because this is not a race issue.
The men live locally and we see them from time to time. They call my daughter names, and me, too, if I'm with her. I say to them, "I'm not frightened of any of you." My daughter calls out, "I've moved on with my life and it's a shame you can't move on with yours." Our relationship is better than it has ever been. We talk to each other and if she goes out with friends, she leaves a note on the fridge telling me where she's gone and when she'll be back. It's fantastic to get those notes.

Police arrested Amber Hales for sexual activity with a child after her alleged victim Joshua Jeffrey complained to them last year
A mum who had a baby by her partner’s schoolboy cousin has escaped trial – because prosecutors ruled a court case was not in the public interest.
Police arrested Amber Hales for sexual activity with a child after her alleged victim Joshua Jeffrey complained to them last year.
He told officers she groomed him for sex behind her boyfriend Andrew Jeffrey’s back after he moved in with them aged 13 seven years ago.
Joshua claims Hales took him into her bed after forcing his unsuspecting older cousin out of the house – but 18 months later she showed Joshua the door too when she found she was expecting his child.
In an astonishing twist, Hales, now 29, then successfully begged Andrew – the father of her two young daughters – to take her back.
He claims she told him her pregnancy was the result of a one-night stand with a stranger and he accepted it.
For years Joshua – who had no idea he was the dad of her third daughter – kept what happened with Hales to himself.
Then he heard she and Andrew had split again after having a fourth baby girl – and feared Hales would be alone with the children.
Joshua, now 21, says: “I heard Amber was trying to get the kids to live with her and something just clicked inside me.
“At that point I had to speak out. I had kept it bottled up for a long time but I had to do it. I felt disgusted about the fact I let her do that to me.
“But I am grown up now and I owed it to those kids to let someone know what she did to me .”
But Joshua’s biggest shock came after plucking up the courage to tell the police.
He says: “I didn’t even know I was a dad until they did a DNA test on the baby Amber was pregnant with when we split.
“It’s a nightmare unfolding for me, Andrew and the whole family.
“I went off the rails after the abuse and have been in trouble for petty crime. So going to police and telling them what happened to me was the hardest thing.
"But I felt certain they would take me seriously. She had my baby when I was still a child.”
Joshua also told his secret to stunned security worker Andrew, 32, who then went to police to back his cousin.
Hales was arrested, but the final bombshell came after officers handed the case file, including the DNA evidence, to the Crown Prosecution Service in February.
Joshua says: “We’ve now been told by police that somehow the CPS have decided it wasn’t something they wanted to pursue. I can’t believe it.
“I’m angry and scared to live in a world where someone can get away with that. I want her locked up. I want her to rot in jail where she can never go near a child again.”
When the Sunday Mirror contacted CPS North West last week to question the ruling, a spokesman admitted their decision.
But he added that the case including all the evidence given to police was now under review. Today Joshua and Andrew are telling us their stories in the hope of finally getting the case to court.
Josh told Greater Manchester Police last August how he moved in with Hales and his cousin after problems with his parents.
He had known her since he was seven when she started dating Andrew and she was accepted into the Jeffreys’ close-knit family.
Andrew also recalls: “I told Amber about Josh’s troubles with my auntie and uncle one night and she jumped at the chance to have him come and stay with us.
"She knew how close we were so I thought she was doing it for me. I thought it was lovely and she treated him just like our own kids.”
Josh adds: “At first I thought it was just normal that she paid me lots of attention. I loved it because I felt wanted. I had a little crush on her when I first met her so I liked being around her all the time.”
But while the mum-of-two enjoyed the 13-year-old’s company, partner Andrew claims she started steadily neglecting the rest of her family.
“Around that time she changed from being really maternal and attentive to detached and uninterested,” says Andrew.
Then, six months into Joshua’s stay, Andrew went to visit his mum with the girls for a Christmas break. But, unusually, Amber insisted on staying home with Josh.
Her next move was to tear the family apart.
Andrew says: “She called me while we were away and told me she wanted the girls back but not me. She said she needed space. I was gutted – we’d been together eight years.”
But Joshua claims Hales gave him a very different version of the break-up.
He says: “I’d already had one dad walk out on me and she knew how much that had affected me. So she told me Andrew – who I loved and trusted - was the one to walk out and he wasn’t coming back.
“She turned me against him and then made me feel like she was the only one who cared. She made out like he’d let us both down.”
Joshua claims it was the beginning of 18 months of grooming. “She showered me with gifts, like £90 jeans and Nike Air trainers and treated me like an adult,” he says. “
It made me feel grown up and important. And when she moved me out of the kids’ room to stay in her bed with her, I was confused. My childhood crush was coming back.
“It was so childish but one night I typed into my phone ‘what would you do if I kissed you?’ and showed it to her. She said ‘try it and see’.”
Joshua says it was the start of their sexual relationship and he claims she even bedded him when her two children were in the house.
He recalls: “I remember one time she kept me off school to spend the day in bed with her but the girls were there. They came into the bedroom while we were having sex.
"I wanted to stop but she said we were just wrestling and told them to go away and then carried on. At the time she made me feel like it was normal, like I was the big man.
“She made me feel like she was all I had in the world and she manipulated me to do what she wanted.”
Then she fell pregnant. Joshua says he was never aware of it and that she told him he would have to move out because she was being evicted from her rented house.
He went to live with friends and she moved into Andrew’s new home after he agreed to take her back.
Andrew says he told police he knew that Hales had cheated during their relationship but had been unaware that the baby she was carrying was Joshua’s.
He said he took Hales back believing her story about the pregnancy. He told police he raised the child, now six, as his own daughter and a fourth child had followed.
But the pressure of Amber’s infidelity became too much and the relationship crumbled again last year.
Andrew says: “I hadn’t seen or heard from him for ages so I knew something was wrong. He told me everything and let me know he was going to tell the police.
“I remember his voice shaking and he just said, ‘You can’t let her have the kids. You can’t.’ I knew then she had done something terrible. I felt sick.”
Worse was to come as DNA tests during the police investigation revealed that Hales’ third child was in fact his second cousin.
“I remember seeing him for the first time after I found out he was Amber’s child’s dad,” says Andrew.
“I was so nervous. I’m not proud of it but I didn’t know if I was going to scream or cry or punch him or what. But I know she is the one in the wrong. He was a little kid.
"I wish I had seen what was going on and done something about it.”
Speaking at Andrew’s home in Peterborough the pair say they want justice. Joshua says: “She manipulated me and ruined my childhood”
Andrew adds: “She has destroyed this family and is walking free.”
When we contacted Amber Hales she said there was more to the story but beyond that she declined to comment.
A CPS spokesman confirmed: “It has been decided by CPS North West that the decision in this case should be reviewed.
"This process is now under way and we will inform those involved of the outcome as soon as we can.”

CHRISTINA Babin walked nervously towards the rota pinned to a notice board, wondering which older man she would be made to sleep with tonight.
She was just 12 and one of thousands of kids growing up in Children of God communes in the US, where sick leaders put girls on a "sharing schedule", offering them to a different man for each night of the week.
The cult was founded in 1968 by David Brandt Berg in California and grew to 130 communities around the world, housing 13,000 members.
Berg convinced them the end of the world was coming and taught them that sex was the way to find God and that “death was the ultimate orgasm.”
Women had to make themselves available to any man who wanted to have sex with them, girls were placed on a sex “rota” from the age of 12 and boys – including tragic star River Phoenix - were sexually assaulted from the age of four.
Even Berg’s own son, Ricky Rodriguez, was brought up by a team of nannies who were encouraged to sexually abuse him “almost from birth.”
Children were also beaten, starved and made to exercise until they passed out in harsh 'prison camps'.
Now, in a new Discovery documentary on cults, Christina and fellow survivor Jemima Farris have revealed the horror of growing up in the Children of God “family”.

Christina’s mum Elizabeth joined the Children of God when she was just 21.
It was the swinging sixties and the young mum from Louisiana was keen to throw off the shackles of her Catholic upbringing.
Christina's dad didn't want to join the cult - but when he refused to go, cult members came and forcefully took Christina off him.
At the camp in Colorado, the children were taught to show unwavering devotion to Berg who they called “Father David" - and were told that all the adults there were now their parents.
Children were not allowed to go to school - instead Berg taught them about sex.
“You would wake up in the morning and they would be playing Father David’s words,” says Christina. “You would go to bed to somebody reading you his writings.”
Jemima – who was born into the cult in Seattle in 1972 after her pregnant mum ran away from her dad – adds: “Every aspect of your life was controlled and monitored, down to how many pieces of toilet paper you used."

Berg, a married dad of four who had been kicked out of the mainstream church, was obsessed with sex and told followers, “The devil hates sex. God loves it."
Members were encouraged to imagine they were having sex with Jesus when they masturbated and to chant phrases like: "My pu**y is excited for you, Jesus."
Women – both married and single – were expected to give their bodies to any man who wanted them and were forbidden to use birth control.
Attractive female members also became “Flirty Fishers” - women sent to seduce influential and wealthy men to raise money.
Initially, the sex was limited to adults but after the birth of Berg’s adopted son Ricky Rodriquez, in 1975, the cult took an even darker twist.
Ricky - son of Berg's lover Karen Zerby - was to become a “guinea pig” of sexual experimentation and, from birth, Berg surrounded him with a team of nannies who were instructed to “introduce him to sex”.
In 1982, when he was seven, his sick upbringing was documented in an illustrated book called The Story of Davidito, which included pictures of his sexual abuse and was distributed to communes around the world.
Before long a sick edict – known as the Law of Love – was issued at family meetings.
“David Berg’s letter said that anybody could have sex with anybody else regardless of age,” recalls Christina. “I sat in the meeting with everybody else reading that and I knew what it meant.
“It was now time for us children to be part of this.”
In a chilling recording, Berg can be heard telling his followers: “He’s going to advocate child sex? Yes. He’s going to advocate child brides? Yes.”
Jemima was 12 when she was forced to sleep with men.
“You had to make yourself available to men for sex,” she says.
“They taught us it was a privilege. We were placed on sharing schedules, which was a rotation of different men.
“Once we had a dress up night and we had a tent with fortune teller who looked into her crystal ball and told you your sexual partner for the night.
“You weren’t allowed to say no. If you said no, they would specifically put you with people you didn’t want to be with.”
Christina recounts her own initiation into sex, at the age of 12.
“A couple came and took me to their bedroom and instructed me in the ‘ways of love,” she says.
“Afterwards I went to the bathroom and was cleaning myself up and feeling bad about myself that I didn’t like it. I thought there was something wrong with my heart and my soul. That I wasn’t right with God.
“We were told that sex was how to show God’s love.”
If the children didn’t comply, they were beaten with a board.
Survivor Dawn Watson recently revealed children were made to sleep with "uncles" , were sent to a "spanking room" for punishment and were shown pictures of naked women nailed to a cross.
The group also set up "prison camps" in Japan, Thailand and the Philippines for teenagers who were considered "rebellious", who were locked in solitary confinement for weeks, starved and beaten until they “confessed” their sins.
They were publicly spanked with a wooden board and forced to exercise in the blistering sun until they passed out.
Christina was sent to the Philippines with her brother, who was put in solitary for two months for “impure thoughts.”
“They beat him and made him fast,” she says. “Then one day I saw him in the yard. They were making him do Calesthenics but he keeled over and was throwing up. They told him to get up and carry on. And he was a believer. He hadn’t even done anything.”
Christina finally escaped the cult at the age of 19, after meeting a man who was about to be inducted into the sect and marrying him.
But Jemima was 27 before she could turn her back on her “faith”.
“I was terrified to leave,” she says. “They told us that if you leave, you’re going to be drug addicts and prostitutes on the street. I believed 100 percent that God would punish me if I left.”
In fact, she was kicked out for smoking drugs in 2000, and spiralled into addiction. Now clean, she says that she has forgiven the cult members who sexually abused her.
“I try not to blame them. We were all victims, really,” she says today.

Tragically, not everyone lived to tell the tale.
River Phoenix, whose family left the sect when he was seven, went on to be a celebrated actor.
But he was haunted by memories of
