Hi, we are doing a round the world trip as a family next summer and will spend about 6 days in Japan . I have been on business and was amazed by Tokyo but this will be the first time for my wife and 13 and 16 year old daughters.
My initial thoughts are 3 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto . My questions are as follows:
- Would this itinerary work given the teenagers lack of tolerance for whole days spent looking at museums and shrines?
- Are there any attractions that teenage kids would really enjoy as an antidote to general sightseeing?
- We usually stay in Hilton equivalent hotels. Are there aparthotels or family friendly hotels you would recommend that aren't too astronomically expensive?

Your teenage girls would likely love Tokyo due to its atmosphere.
Kyoto is mostly about temples and shrines. If you are worried they might get bored, spend a day a Nara and an evening at Namba and Dotonbori area of Osaka .
Shopping is everywhere. Certain experience workshops might be worthwhile as well.
Your girls are old enough that they need their own room. There are many Western style hotels. Your budget (as an actual figure you are willing to spend) is important though before any recommendations can be made.
I think it's a good plan. Maybe do the culture in Kyoto first, and then Tokyo . For many people the highlight of Tokyo is walking around neighborhoods like harajuku, shinjuku and shibuya. I wouldn't worry about a teenage girl losing interest in that. Try some small museums perhaps. I like the Ota museum on Omotesando for ukiyoe. Another good one might be the Mori Tower, which combines an observation and contemporary art museum in Roppongi - http://www.roppongihills.com/en/guide/ .
3 days in Kyoto might seem like a lot, but the temples have good zen and landscape gardens. Time spent in Arashiyama might be good with the monkeys and bamboo grove. From kyoto spend a late afternoon/evening in Osaka for food and shopping and people-watching.
I was just in Japan with my 16 year old son. Because I was there for work, he spent 7 days in Matsuyama with me but then the rest in Tokyo , Kyoto , and Hiroshima .
His favorite thing was the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu . I'm still shocked he enjoyed that so much, and I know you won't be going down there, but consider a traditional garden.
He enjoyed the deer on Miyajima , so plan a visit to Nara unless you decide to take a day trip to Hiroshima. Speaking of Hiroshima, I think the Peace Park and museum provide important lessons for teens. My son was moved and said he was glad we went. You could do that and Miyajima in a long day trip from Kyoto to break up the temples and shrines
We went to the monkey park in Arashyama. It was a highlight and a nice break from temples. See the bamboo there too.
He had the goal of eating at Starbucks overlooking the famous crosswalk in Shibuya . We did that and he was thrilled.
We went to Tokyo Disney. If your kids are tired of shrines, Tokyo Disney Sea is a nice option.

How about taking a photo in traditional kimono style? In Kyoto , some studios are foreign tourists friendly. It is an option that parents can go shrines while daughters are taking photos.
"Studio Shiki " tells on the website that they can finish a photobook album on the same day.
"Yume Kobo" is a bit well-known, 4 studios in Kyoto and 1 studio in Tokyo . (Perhaps 3 studios in Kyoto for English speakers.) You will get the finishing later by mail, and enable to get all shots on CD-R if you pay additional.

Schoolgirls walk home at Ebisu district in Tokyo on September 4, 2017. Young people are killing themselves in Japan at a high rate.
The latest survey shows 250 elementary and high school age children took their own lives in that year for a variety of reasons including bullying, family issues and stress, the country's Ministry of Education said Monday, according to local media.
Those figures were 5 up on the previous year, and the highest since 1986, when 268 pupils died.
"The number of suicides of students have stayed high, and that is an alarming issue which should be tackled," ministry official Noriaki Kitazaki told reporters. He said the cause of the rise was unclear.
Most of those who killed themselves were high school students. The government previously recorded an annual spike in suicides on September 1, the start of the new school year.
"The long break from school enables you to stay at home, so it's heaven for those who are bullied," Nanae Munemasa, then 17, told CNN in 2015 . "When summer ends, you have to go back. And once you start worrying about getting bullied, committing suicide might be possible."
Munemasa considered suicide herself due to bullying, before going public with her story in an attempt to help other young people.
While the youth suicide rate was up last fiscal year, the total number of suicides in Japan fell to 21,321 in 2017, from a peak of 34,427 in 2003, according to the National Police Agency .
In 2016, Japan's government announced a plan to cut the country's suicide rate by 30% by 2026, particularly among young people, according to the Japan Times . Part of the plan includes hiring counselors for every elementary and junior high school in the country, and launching a 24-hour helpline.
"We'd love to eliminate such tragedies altogether, but the reality is several hundred children are taking their lives (each year)," education ministry official Koju Matsubayashi told the newspaper. "It's important to teach children how to get help as soon as possible ... because it becomes harder and harder to find help once they're already suffering. The light at the end of the tunnel gets darker and darker until they begin to start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as death."

While Japan has long struggled with high suicide rates -- it is the leading cause of death among young people -- the issue also persists across the wider Asia-Pacific region.
In Asia, only South Korea has a higher suicide rate than Japan, according to the World Health Organization , at 26.9 deaths per 100,000 people in 2017, compared to 18.5 for Japan and 3.2 for the Philippines. It is also one of the leading causes of death in Hong Kong .
As well as stress caused by East Asian countries' intense work cultures , experts said many parts of the region also have a stigma against seeking treatment for depression or other interventions that could help reduce suicide.
Research shows that suicide can also be contagious , with the death of one person or multiple people contributing to a rise in suicidal behavior among others, especially those who already have suicidal thoughts or a known risk factor for suicide.

Japan's battle against paedophilia is well documented. The number of minors abused in child pornography has risen five-fold in the past decade, according to official figures.
"Official" figures are sadly just the tip of the surface, and if they say that Japan's "battle" is well documented, I would strongly suggest that they are loosing the war!

I lived and worked in Japan for 3 years, and I love the culture. But it is a completely different culture from ours, especially in matters sexual, as far as I could tell as an outsider.
The age of consent is 13, and there seems to be little shame attached to sex - they seem to have a much more matter of fact view of it as a physical need that is satisfied in various ways, all of which would cause considerable social approbation in ours. So, it is a little hard to judge them this particular sexual subculture from so far away.
Standard Western feminist theory or traditional Judaeo-Christian morality don't seem to fit very well and have limited explanatory power. The nuances and tensions, and so the power equations and exploitation, if any, is quite different from what we understand.

BTW, AOG n Japan is 13 but prefectures can set it above and most set it to 16-18.

Yeah I've always found the pageant thing for children to be beyond creepy. This is worse with the sheer number of grown men idolizing kids they have no relationship with at all... Whether in an innocent way (I'm not sure any would be) or fetishist way... It's creepy. I don't understand why parents would stand by and let it happen either. Really weird.

@econstats - different situations. The situations you mention are all valid reasons for outrage but none of them are situations which put the children on display, rather crimes happening in private or secretive situations. Still no less disgusting... Not saying the situation in Japan is worse... but it does seem there may be less protection for children in some ways at least.
Granted this stuff does happen elsewhere BUT for it to be socially "acceptable" and these creatures having no shame about it take it to a whole nother level and with such prevalence. Personally i think its a side effect of being squeezed into cookie pigeon holes and independence being squashed from such a young age.

It is nothing short of a mental illness! Many Japanese men seem to never get older than 13 (mentally and emotionally). I guess you could call them, morally retarded. However, you also have to consider the girls. They are just as responsible for this illness with all this idol crap. I'm sure some of them are duped into performing, but the majority enjoy their 15 minutes of fame and exploitation. This 'illness' started in Japan, but it has spread to many other Asian countries as well, Taiwan, S/Korea, Thailand and more. Next time you are on a train watch the J-men when a group of school girls get on the train. They will always check them out from head to toe and you can see their twisted little minds making up sexual scenarios with these little girls. It makes me want to smack them in the back of the head! My last trip to Japan I attended a free concert of one of these so called "girl groups" the guys were all singing along I never witnessed anything negative happening every one was having a great time.
