A dangerous "sexting" trend seems to be on the rise among minors after six teenagers were probed by police over explicit images sent over the web or mobile phones, police said.
Online child exploitation squad officers investigated four boys and two girls, all aged 13 to 16, for sending and possessing images of a sexual nature, employing digital technologies.
Police are concerned about a disturbing trend among teenagers who are sending sexually explicit images to one another via the web or mobile phones.
Detective Senior Sergeant Lindsay Garratt said he was concerned that young people were not getting the message about the dangers of such activities.
Sexual photos circulated after break-up
Two 13-year-old boys and two 13-year-old girls from the northern suburbs were cautioned after they were found to be involved in the distribution of two sexually explicit images of one of the girls.
The digital photographs were circulated by the girl's boyfriend after their relationship ended, and were circulated among students at the school for three weeks.
The girl was then subjected to bullying, in the form of name calling, inside and outside the school, Detective Garratt said.
Police were contacted after the images were discovered by teachers within the school.
"Had teachers and police not intervened, there would be significant risk of these images finding their way onto the internet and all over the world almost instantly, exposing the girl to years of anguish," Detective Garratt said.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly creating a false Facebook account, impersonating another student.
He allegedly used the account to pressure two girls, aged 14 and 15, to expose themselves on a webcam and perform sexual acts in two separate instances.
One of the girls refused, however the other conceded after allegedly being threatened with violence upon her return to school.
The video file was uploaded to Facebook for others to see, and her friends were notified, Detective Garratt said.
The boy has been charged with one count of encouraging a child over 13 and under 16 to do an indecent act, one count of attempting to procure a child over 13 and under 16 to do an indecent act, and one count of distributing child exploitation material.
In another case, a 14-year-old boy from the southern suburbs was cautioned after being found with child exploitation material on his mobile phone.
Concerns were raised that he was sending images and videos of himself over the internet, and was pressuring girls for sex, according to police.
"It is important that we keep getting the message out to young people. Just as alcohol, young people and cars are a dangerous mix, puberty, hormones, young people and digital technologies can also pose a risk," Detective Garratt said.
"While at the time it may seem like a bit of harmless fun, young people need to know the implications for themselves, from being bullied and ostracised at school, to affecting employment and relationships in the future.
"However, young people also need to be making the link between the images they are creating, and the supply to a 'market' amongst sex offenders, who are trawling the internet for sexualised images of children for their sexual gratification."
In separate incidents last week, a 66-year-old Wagin man was charged with possessing child exploitation material and a 55-year-old Noranda man was charged after he allegedly used electronic communication to groom a child under 16 and expose the child to indecent matters.
The 66-year-old has also been charged with encouraging a child under 16 years to engage in sexual behaviour.
"To safeguard teenagers, parents need to take an active role in the way their children are using the internet and mobile phones, and take the time to explain how they can be exploited by others," Detective Senior Sergeant Garratt said.
"Young people need to understand that with digital technology, once those images or videos leave their hands, they lose control of them forever. They can be across the world within seconds."
The 55-year-old man and 16-year-old boy will face court later this month, while the 66-year-old will appear on April 5.

A webcam model was in the middle of shooting X-rated content in her bedroom for “subscribers” when one act went horribly wrong.
A woman has accidentally shot herself in the genitalia in what’s been described as a pornographic video gone horribly wrong.
Lauren Hunter Daman, 27, from the US, reportedly works as a webcam model for a popular adult site called Chaturbate, where users “tip” performers for requested sex acts.
She was in the middle of recording X-rated content for her clients when the shocking incident took place earlier this month.
According to a police report , Lauren was alone in her bedroom when officers were called to an “accidental gunshot wound” incident at a residence in Georgia on November 9.
Upon arriving at the house, which is also occupied by several other residents, police spoke with a paramedic who had obtained an unloaded 9mm firearm with “spent bullet casing”, The Sun reports.
The paramedic told the officer that “the female had shot herself in her vagina, accidentally,” the report reads.
Jordan Allen, who lives with Lauren and claims to own the gun, said he was in the kitchen walking back to the bedroom when he heard the gun go off.
When he entered the bedroom, he found Lauren with a small amount of blood on her leg, according to the report.
Lauren allegedly told Jordan that she had accidentally shot herself.
Damien told officers that the young woman makes sexual videos of herself for her “subscribers” and he believed she was recording a video at the time the gun went off.
As per the report, he said the gun belonged to him and that it has been in his family “for a long period of time”.
Police also interviewed a second housemate, Addie Ruth Johnson, who told authorities she was watching TV when Lauren walked into the living room, telling her and several others “that she accidentally shot herself”.
Lauren allegedly told police at one point she discharged the weapon herself, and at another that the gun went off during a consensual sex act with Jordan.
But despite the inconsistencies, Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore told The Smoking Gun that the shooting is unlikely to result in criminal charges.
According to the police report, the sheriff’s department branded the incident “reckless conduct”.
It remains unclear why Lauren was using the gun for work and whether she was recording live when the firearm was discharged, the publication reports.
She was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital where she was discharged earlier this week with no serious injuries.
Haunting surveillance footage captured the woman’s last known moments with chilling reports revealing what happened next.
Bondi Rescue lifeguard Terry McDermott has died after a battle with cancer, with a tragic final post to Instagram showing him singing in a hospital ward.
A couple were stunned to find a secret room in their basement – but it was hiding an extremely creepy feature.
