An Alaskan teen on Reddit is seeking legal advice after his parents set up security cameras in his bedroom and bathroom to make sure he no longer masturbates.

“What can I do?” he asked in the subreddit r/legaladvice. “I’m 15 and think I should be allowed to touch my own body, this is embarrassing and destroys my privacy … Please help.”
At the beginning of May, his parents caught the teen masturbating—a normal behavior his parents are apparently against. He wrote that his parents have taboo beliefs regarding sexual activities before marriage but that he learned “some things” off the internet because he wasn’t even allowed to be in sexual education classes.
“My dad barged in without knocking and started screaming at me. He and my mom then sat me down and told me I’m not allowed to touch myself,” he wrote.
The mortified teen agreed not to masturbate anymore. He later found an Amazon package with indoor security cameras inside.
“I asked my dad and he said they are putting them in my room and bathroom so they can monitor and make sure I’m not masturbating,” he wrote.
His parents said they will now be checking the cameras daily to make sure their son sticks to his word, according to the redditor.
“I said that wasn’t OK and he said that I agreed to not masturbate and this is holding me to the agreement,” he wrote.
Nicholas Bala, a family and children’s law expert, told the Daily Dot that even adolescents “have some right to privacy,” and the parents would be seen as out of line in many jurisdictions—if not all.
“In almost all jurisdictions there would be a number of offenses involved in video recording a minor engaged in a sexual act, even by himself,” Bala said. “The fact that it is his parents and they own the home would not be a defense.”
Bala said the best course of action for the teen to take is talking with a trusted adult or his pediatrician—who would most likely give the parents an “educational talk.”
Another solution Bala offered is calling an adolescent helpline or Child Protective Services. Bala said CPS wouldn’t necessarily take away the teen away from the parents, especially if they are good parents. CPS would instead send a social worker to the home to talk with them in hopes of remedying the situation.
Bala said if the teen is looking for a legal fix, then he could call the American Civil Liberties Union. He said the teen could call the police as a last resort because they are a “very blunt force” who could arrest the parents.
Redditors also swooped in to offer the desperate teen advice, with many concerned for his privacy.
“Regardless of whether or not you’re masturbating (which is completely normal) you need to have a reasonable amount of privacy while you’re using the bathroom and changing,” one redditor replied.
Many encouraged the teen to talk with someone about his parents’ plans.
Like Bala, they suggested he speak with a trusted adult, call a non-emergency police line, other family members, or even CPS.
“However you feel comfortable pursuing this, please realize that you are a normal kid, exhibiting normal, natural, and healthy behaviors,” one redditor wrote.
“(Masturbation) is done by both boys and girls and is normal behavior,” according to a website managed by pediatricians. “A child who masturbates is not oversexed, promiscuous, or sexually deviant.”
Masturbation should not be limited unless it is excessive and interfering with “normal routines, responsibilities, or play,” according to the website.

A SUBSTITUTE teacher has been accused of filming herself masturbating in front of a class of second-graders, cops say.
Amelia Ressler, 30, was arrested on Friday and charged with 19 counts of child molestation, which allegedly took place at Mt Zion Elementary School, according to local police.
The school is near Carrollton, a city about 54 miles west of Atlanta, in Georgia.
School officials notified investigators of “allegations of misconduct” by the teacher.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office's subsequent investigation found that Ressler had “engaged in indecent and immoral acts while in the presence of school aged children."
“It appears she was masturbating while the classroom was full of kids,” Ashley Hulsey, with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, told WAGA.
The 19 counts represent one of each child in her second grade classroom, cops said.
According to Husley, investigators found evidence of the indecent act when someone in the community saw a video and alerted the school.
“We obtained video evidence because she videoed it herself and disseminated it and we were able to get a hold of that evidence,” she said.
Hulsey also said that investigators were in the process of conducting interviews with students who were present in the classroom during the alleged incident.
Additional charges could be added based on those interviews, according to Hulsey.
“It’s one of these things the kids are going through that they shouldn’t,” she said.
“The mental anguish that it’s causing these children and parents, that was our drive behind working this case, getting it down quickly, getting her put in jail as quickly as possible.”
Ressler is currently being held in the county jail. Bond has not been set, jail records show.
