Hello Nasty is the fifth studio album by American rap rock group Beastie Boys . It was released on July 14, 1998, by Capitol Records and sold 681,000 copies in its first week, debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 album sales chart. The album won two awards at the 1999 Grammys , in the categories of Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for " Intergalactic ". In the Beastie Boys Book, Ad-Rock said he felt that Hello Nasty was their "best record". [1]

Hello Nasty was released on July 14, 1998, four years after the band's previous album, Ill Communication —and marked the addition of DMC champion Mix Master Mike to the group's line-up. [2] "I Don't Know" features Miho Hatori on vocals, and "Dr. Lee, PhD" guest stars dub musician Lee "Scratch" Perry on both vocals and percussion. [3] Hello Nasty also marked Eric Bobo 's last appearance as percussionist in the band, as well as the last time the Beastie Boys worked with a co-producer. [3]

The title for the album was allegedly inspired by the receptionist of their NY-based publicity firm Nasty Little Man who would answer the phone with the greeting "Hello, Nasty". [4] In addition, the title is mentioned in the song "Putting Shame in Your Game". The cover art depicts all three members (Horovitz, Yauch and Diamond from left to right) wrapped in an aluminum sardine tin and getting baked in the sun. The band makes a reference to this in the song "Body Movin'", in which the lyric goes, "MCA, where have you been? Packed like sardines in a tin."

The album was released on CD, double vinyl LP, MiniDisc and cassette tape. One of the cassette formats was packaged for a limited run by BioBox in a small cardboard box rather than a clear plastic case. The BioBox design was an attempt to distinguish the retail product and augment sales. [5]

Hello Nasty received mostly positive reviews upon release. Caroline Sullivan, writing for The Guardian , named the album the "Pop CD of the Week" and stated that it "fills a gap created by the current profusion of serious rock bands like Radiohead ; elbowing its way up front, [and letting] rip with adolescent vigour." [8] She went on to summarize the record as "the perfect party soundtrack by the perfect party band." [8] Select ' s John Harris praised the Beastie Boys' lyrics as being as "fantastically off-beam as ever" while at the same time noting that they had "broadened their musical vistas yet further". [14] Although AllMusic 's Stephen Thomas Erlewine felt that the album's ending was "a little anticlimactic", he also saw Hello Nasty as a progressive step forward from the group's 1992 LP Check Your Head , and praised the input of the group's new recruit, Mixmaster Mike ; "Hiring DJ Mixmaster Mike turned out to be a masterstroke; he and the Beasties created a sound that strongly recalls the spare electronic funk of the early '80s, but spiked with the samples and post-modern absurdist wit that have become their trademarks." [2] In his review for Entertainment Weekly , David Browne highlighted the album's multi-genre sound, along with the group's use of a wide range of musical styles, as its most engaging aspect: [7]

Hello Nasty is a sonic smorgasbord in which the Beasties gorge themselves with reckless abandon. They dabble in lounge-pop kitsch (the loser put-down Song for the Man ), make like a summit of Santana and Traffic (the Latin-flavored "Song for Junior"), and subtly incorporate a drum-and-bass shuffle into the mix ("Flowin' Prose"). The melange makes for a looser, more free-spirited record than their earlier albums; the music invites you in, rather than threatening to shut you out. [7]
All tracks are written by Beastie Boys except where noted.

YOU Don't Know Me was slammed by BBC viewers within the first few minutes of its premiere on Sunday night - with many ridiculing it as "atrocious" and "inaccurate".
The drama, which was inspired by the real criminal justice system, tells the story from the viewpoint of someone accused of murder - but last night’s premiere didn’t go as planned.
The four-part series left viewers with plenty of questions as they attempted to decipher whether protagonist Hero was telling the truth or not.
Hero, a young man from south London, is in the dock for murder.
Despite having physical evidence stacked against him, he is adamant he did not murder a young boy.
The first instalment explained how Hero had fired his own barrister during the court case so he could represent himself.
Hero was determined to present his own version of events to explain how a law-abiding car salesman is in the frame for murder.
Viewers, however, were quick to ridicule the series for not following exact court protocols.
One viewer fumed: "Defendant for murder marches down with no security, after refusing to give evidence, to give his evidence by making a closing speech which he can’t be examined on.”
Echoing their comments, someone else highlighted: "Seems an improbable legal set up on You Don’t Know Me.
"This is the BBC. Atrocious. Defund them."
Meanwhile, a third added: "Why do dramas never portray courtroom proceedings as per reality?”
Despite a majority of bad reviews, there were some fans who were hooked on the series.
One fan commented: "Only been watching for 20 minutes and I already know it’s gonna be a good series.”
While another said: “Right, that’s that then. I’m invested and hooked already.”
You Don't Know Me is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
