It’s the question being asked by the 14 million viewers who are watching “The Good Wife.” Julianna Margulies, the show’s star, isn’t saying. She plays Alicia Florrick, a lawyer who returns to the workplace to support her family while her husband – disgraced, adulterous Illinois state’s attorney Peter Florrick (Chris Noth) – does prison time. One of Margulies’ friends, a Toronto teacher, e-mailed her to say the women in the school are actively debating the question. On fan forums, women want an answer, too, the way women did of real-life political wives such as Silda Spitzer and Elizabeth Edwards, but Margulies, 43, prefers to remain in the dark.
Sitting on a wooden bench in the lobby of a courthouse in Jamaica, Queens, where the show films its trial scenes, Margulies explains.
“I asked the writers not to tell me,” she says. “The challenge of acting on television is making everything fresh – and the only way to keep that up is not knowing,” she says. “And the truth is, Alicia wouldn’t know day-to-day what’s going to happen anyway.”
She adds that viewer feedback is running about 50/50 – half for divorce, half for sticking with the marriage. “What you’ll actually see in an upcoming episode is that there are actually bets going on, online: will she, won’t she, divorce him?” she says.
When she’s not on camera, Margulies wears a full-length black parka over a smart, navy suit and trades high “I feel guilty saying that, because that’s what’s going on in Alicia’s life,” she says. “I watched a lot of the press conferences. I remember the McGreevys, I remember watching the Spitzers. I remember the Clintons.” And now having filmed seven episodes of her show, Margulies says people should go easy on the Silda Spitzers of this world – and Alicia Florrick.
“The truth is, I sat there and judged all of them. You don’t know until you’re in their shoes,” she says. “And it’s something that I can relate to, now that I’m married. I’m in love with my husband. I don’t know what I would do,
Margulies is married to attorney Keith Lieberthal and has a 1-year-old son, Kieran. Her family life was the big reason she told producers of “The Good Wife” not to offer her the show if it was going to shoot in Vancouver or Los Angeles. She joins a growing number of actors, including Glenn Close and Edie Falco, who don’t want to leave New York to work – and now, thanks to smart TV producers, don’t have to.
“My life is here. My husband can’t just get up and go,” she says. “They said, ‘OK.’ And I was shocked.”
A New York production base gives “The Good Wife” access to gritty locations like the Jamaica courthouse on Sutphin Boulevard, where neighborhood residents knock on Margulies’ trailer door and ask her what she’s doing. (“I tell them, ‘The show’s called “The Good Wife.’ Watch it,” she quips.)
It also gives the show access to some of the best theater actors. One of them, Christine Baranski, strides back and forth across the courthouse lobby floor, sleek as a panther, memorizing dialogue for her next scene.
Glancing at Baranski from the bench, Margulies says, “She’s so elegant. I was so thrilled when she came on board. I said to her, ‘I hope I turn into you when I grow up.'”
“The Good Wife” reunites Margulies with Chris Noth. She worked with him on “Law & Order,” back in 1993, when he was still playing Det. Mike Logan.
“I played – no one ever knew what to do with me back then – they didn’t know what ethnicity I was,” says Margulies, who is Jewish. “I think my last name was Melendez. I was a Puerto Rican. [The role was Lt. Ruth Mendoza.] I’ll never forget that. Chris said to me, ‘You’re going to have your own show one day.’ ”
Future episodes of “The Good Wife” suggest a softening of Alicia’s stance against her husband. As long as “The Good Wife” continues to explore both sides of Alicia’s dilemma, Margulies will give viewers something to talk about. And that includes their wish that Alicia become romantically involved with her co-worker, Will Gardner, played by Josh Charles.
“Women will stop me on the street and say, ‘I hope you have an affair with that guy,'” she says, laughing. “Alicia can’t have an affair right now. Her life is so complicated. She has to be the breadwinner and she has to maintain some sort of normalcy in the house with the children. She doesn’t have the luxury of falling apart. But I can’t wait for the day that she loses it.”
Actors have to look over their shoulders when working with Christine Baranski. The Tony and Emmy-winning actress has stolen scenes from Robin Williams, in “The Birdcage.” And she stole “Cybill” from its star, Cybill Shepherd. Known for her comedic roles, Baranski is trying a change of pace with Diane Lockhart, senior partner on “The Good Wife.” It’s a lot of legal lingo, but Baranski, 57, loves her new job.
NYP: Everyone’s so excited that you’re back on television.
Christine Baranski: Oh, darling, stop.
CB: My manager said, “There’s one good script out there this pilot season.” And then Chuck Lorre, who launched me in TV on “Cybill,” asked me to speak when he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. My manager said, “While you’re there, would you meet the writer and the director of “The Good Wife”? So, they took me to some lot. It all looks alike, LA. Whenever I’m there, it’s not, “How soon can I leave?,” it’s “When is the next flight out?” But I met them and we had a wonderful talk. I didn’t have to read for it. It was so cool.”
NYP: Were you ready to go back to TV?
CB: I had done nine months on Broadway in “Boeing Boeing.” And “Mamma Mia,” the movie. Then the recession hit in November. This came right afterwards. It was just beautiful. I’m an East Coast baby. I live in Connecticut. I don’t work every day, so I get to go the opera and the theater.
elegant. How do you maintain yourself?
CB: Oh, darling, stop. I’m naturally tall and lanky so clothes look good on me. I go hiking, I do yoga. I went to Juilliard, where they emphasize the voice. I remember winning a Tony for playing a brisk, witty Englishwoman. I was a little young for that role, but over the years I’ve kind of refined that.
NYP: In the pilot episode, you had to act with a dog. What was that like?
CB: I have to tell you a funny story about that. I thought it was going to be a little dog and they gave me this humongous, hairy, Scotty dog. So I was scooping up this gigantic ball of hair, and had to continue with all this dialogue, much of which was exposition. Off camera, the dog trainer was giving hand signals to the dog, and also using beeping signals. It was a joke. You will never see that dog again, darling.
