Yogyakarta buying snow

Yogyakarta has always been one of my favourite place in Indonesia and luckily my husband feels the same. It's really hard to find a place in Indonesia that we both like :- Yogyakarta is a culturally rich city. It has character. There is something about it that make us always thing of going back for holidays. It's a good option for a short holidays. Not only it is strategically located in the city, it is also a nice and cosy colonial styled hotel. The hotel compound itself is not huge, but it is very charming and the decorations and ambience is just so lovely. Many people suggested me the other popular and famous hotel in Yogyakarta but the type of decorations and interior that suit us well is The Phoenix. The restaurant there, Paprika , provides amazing spread of breakfast buffet and imagine while you are having breakfast, a very soothing sound of traditional musical instrument played by two musicians can be heard. It is a great place to have dinner too with its ala carte menu. It doesn't happen very often that we happily eat in the hotel's restaurant. The hotel staffs are very lovely. Highly recommended hotel! What to do in Yogyakarta? Visiting Borobudur is a must. Borobudur is a 9th-century Buddhist temple located about 40 km north-west of Yogyakarta, around 1. The temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. Many people like to go there to enjoy the sunrise. I am not a morning person and doesn't have desire to do that yet :- We rent a car without a driver as we like our own family privacy. But if you want to rent a car with a driver, you can do that as well. Just ask the hotel to help you with the car reservation. Please note renting through hotel is more expensive compared to if you find a car rental company by yourself and I drove from the hotel to Borobudur. We left the hotel around 7. Because we had our 2. It was a hard work for a toddler and there's no way we could have carried him he's way too heavy! It is such a magnificent temple and the view from the top is simply breathtaking. From Borobudur, we drove to Amanjiwo Resort to have lunch please note that the food is overpriced! While we had our lunch at their restaurant, we can see Borobudur from a distance last photo below. Very nice view! Please be aware that if you are driving yourself there using Google Maps, errrrr Google Maps took us through very small streets alleys?! We have tasted Monggo Chocolate during our previous visit and we think they taste absolutely delicious. Of course you can't compare yet with Switzerland chocolates, but I can say Monggo Chocolate is the best chocolate you can find in Indonesia. They have various different flavour and most of them taste nice. They are also available in supermarkets in Yogyakarta. Monggo Chocolate has an interesting story - it all began when a Belgian man felt the lack of quality chocolate in the world's 3rd largest producer of cocoa. The rest is history Visiting Ullen Sentalu Museum , a Javanese culture and art museum located in Kaliurang highland, about 25 km north of Yogyakarta towards Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia. The museum displays relics and artifacts from royal houses and kratons of Java. We enjoyed it but our dear 2. Sightseeing to major landmarks by horse-cart ride or becak ride. We went around passing Tugu the monument located in the center of the crossroad between the Mangkubumi, Soedirman, A. It also serves as a center of Javanese culture. We could have watched the Gamelan traditional musical instrument performance in Kraton but we missed that, unfortunately. At night time, many people gathered in Alun Alun known and there were many rickshaw with lights that you can ride to circle Alun Alun. We spent four nights and all above were what we did when we visited Yogyakarta with our toddler son. We spent our spare time to chill out at the hotel's pool. Below are the other things you can do in Yogyakarta which we did when it was just the two of us visiting. Visiting Prambanan , a 9th-century Hindu temple located about 20 km east of Yogyakarta. Watching Ramayana Dance at Purawisata is another thing you can do. Ramayana epic story is about the struggle of Prince Rama to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana. We watched it before we had kid, we booked it through our hotel and the hotel made arrangement. We wanted to do it again when we visited Yogyakarta with our 2. The other option that is probably better is to watch Ramayana Dance at Prambanan. If you are into paintings, going to Affandi Museum is a must. Affandi is a very famous Indonesian artist. Another place worth visiting is Taman Sari Water Castle , the site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta built in the 18th century. Where and what to eat in Yogyakarta? Nice food! My husband's favourite is Gudeg Manggar. Gudeg is a traditional Javanese cuisine from Yogyakarta and made of young unripe jack fruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar, coconut milk, and some spices. Gudeg Manggar uses coconut flower instead of jack fruit. Definitely a restaurant you must visit when you are in Yogyakarta. Kesuma Restaurant at Gang Sartono No. It was a very small Javanese wooden house restaurant that had only around eight tables in total. The food is really delicious, the home-cooked type of food - thus it took a bit long to cook. They now has moved to a different location just behind the old one. Reservation is a must. Paprika Restaurant at the Phoenix Hotel is one of our favourites, too. I ordered Gudeg a few times. The satay was also nice. They also have some western food in the menu, we ordered Beef Burger for our son. Yogyakarta always give us this warm lovely feeling. Will we come back? Without doubt! There are still many places we have not visited. Some tips:. Nowhere you can use the stroller. It's not a stroller friendly city I may be able to say the same for anywhere else in Indonesia. I am not good at it so I avoid buying from them and just go to the big department store at the end of Marlboro Street, named Mirota. It's fixed price. Happy Travelling! London in Winter. Snow and Ski in Australia. Bali, Indonesia. Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Recent Posts See All. Post not marked as liked 1. Post not marked as liked 2. Write a comment

Yogyakarta has the highest density of cultural and historical places in Java. You can visit tens of ancient temples , century-old markets, history museums, royal Javanese architecture, you name it. Some experiences are quite unique too! I kid you not, some people get off the plane at Yogyakarta, go to visit Borobudur, then promptly return to the airport the same day and continue elsewhere. Visiting Borobudur is actually quite easy during the day with a public bus. You can book tickets to either just visit or climb up the temple yourself too. All the up-to-date information is in this Borobudur Guide. You either have to sleep near the Temple there are plenty of good options, I recommend ADA Homestay — clean, cozy, cheap, and within walking distance from Borobudur or you have to go on a tour. In this case, I recommend this half-day Borobudur tour. It includes a hotel pick-up, witnessing the breathtaking sunrise from Setumbu Hill, and climbing Borobudur for a tour of the temple. If the morning appearance of the sun is reserved for Borobudur, then its late afternoon disappearance is best experienced at Prambanan — the second-largest Hindu temple in the world. You can very easily visit Prambanan for sunset from Yogyakarta using public transport. This Prambanan Sunset tour is awesome value for money and will take you to all the best places! The Ramayana Ballet takes place next to Prambanan Temple and has been regularly performed since It is the biggest traditional dance performance in all of Indonesia bigger than the ones in Bali! Check out my full guide with useful information about watching the Ramayana Ballet. The Ramayana Ballet takes place after sunset and is very easily combined with a visit to Prambanan. You can easily do this independently check my guide. Merapi is one of the decade volcanoes , a set of 16 volcanoes considered worthy of extensive study due to their destructive eruptions and proximity to population centers. And yes! Merapi is extremely active! Not a year goes by without a sizable eruption and in recent history, 3 deadly ones. The most deadly happened in and took over casualties. On the other hand, Merapi tours will take you on a jeep around the volcano and the guides know the best places to see the lava. Jomblang Cave is unique in that it formed not due to ages of water slowly grinding away at rock as in most caves , but in a sudden collapse that formed a vertical sinkhole. Jomblang Cave is an ancient plant conservation site because the vegetation growing inside is unique. Another awesome thing is the beautiful ray of light that you can only watch between and due to the small area of the mouth of the cave. Then, when you turn around, you will be able to watch the sunray go straight inside the cave with you below. Simply marvelous. Visiting Jomblang Cave independently is complicated, as there is neither public transport to it, nor can you guarantee entrance to the cave. An organized tour is therefore strongly recommended. The whole process takes hours during which you will have helpful and experienced batik masters navigating you. Of course, there are also your usual Indonesian snacks and desserts. You can totally do a food tour yourself — note down some of the food items you want to try the links above include over 60 different ones! Go straight down carefully looking for vendors selling the food you want to try. After about 3. Still, if you want more information about the foods and their cultural significance, I suggest you book this night walking and food tour. Surakarta is like a smaller sister to Yogyakarta. It also used to be a semi-autonomous monarchy, which remains the case for Yogyakarta to this day, but not for Surakarta. Nonetheless, Surakarta also called Solo has retained its authentic Javanese character and takes an important place in Javanese history. You can read about all the cool things to do in Surakarta to be prepared for when you go. Trains depart regularly throughout the day, take an hour, and cost only 8. Surakarta is an awesome stop after 3 days in Yogyakarta and before going onward to Mount Bromo. While Mount Merapi is closer to Yogyakarta and very violent and unpredictable, right behind it is Mount Merbabu: a taller and more peaceful its last eruption was in volcano that those in shape can conquer. Hiking to the summit is arduous! Most ascends start in the evening at the village of Selo and hike up to base camp 2 or 3. There, hikers rest for a few hours before waking up in the middle of the night to get to the peak. If you want the sunrise, you have to work for it! It is troublesome to organize the whole affair yourself. You can rent a motorcycle to get to Selo, rent camping equipment there, and navigate the complex bureaucracy of the management of the protected area. Still, you officially need a local guide to accompany you. You have to book a ticket, carefully pack the required materials and the necessary amount of water, and monitor your waste, and other minor things. In this case, I think booking a tour that will take care of everything for you is well worth the money. When most people hear rice terraces, they immediately think of Bali. Bali indeed has some seriously beautiful rice terrace scenery but Java hides some in its countryside too! You have to remember that Java is 22 times larger and 33 times more populous than Bali! If you want to visit some of these spectacular spots in Java, the area around Candi Selogriyo a beautiful Hindu temple is not so far from Yogyakarta — only around 2 hours by car or motorcycle. Getting there by public transport involves changing a few rural buses. One way to do a day trip to Selogriyo independently is to rent a motorcycle and remain flexible throughout the day. Alternatively, you can book a very affordable tour that will take you to the temples, the rice terraces, and also Borobudur which is on the way. This one is my favorite budget activity around Yogyakarta. You can rent a bicycle at most hostels or some motorcycle rentals around Lempuyangan and Malioboro. Then pick a direction. Yogyakarta is quite small and once you leave the city bounds no more than km in any direction from Malioboro it becomes very rural, very quickly. You may have noticed that Yogyakarta the region has a rather long coastline — a whole km. Along it, you will find many cool beaches some with special cultural significance like Parangtritis and Goa Cemara. Unfortunately, the waters on the south side of Java are not quite suitable for swimming — the ocean is too turbulent. One beach has something unique going for it. At Timang Beach, a gondola connects the coast with the nearby isle. The gondola is wooded with metal pulleys and does not look sturdy at all. Dieng Plateau is the only place in Indonesia outside of Papua where snow is possible at all. You can visit all those places independently and on a budget if you follow my Dieng Plateau Guide. A tour is marginally more expensive than doing it by yourself but gives you peace of mind and comfort. Where to go next? How about I interest you in this quite in-depth guide to Java?
