Ariel Winter admits that she "had a hard time finding confidence" as she grew into a young woman while on Modern Family -- but that's all changed.
The 18-year-old actress poses topless in unretouched photos for SELF , and opens up about how she came to accept her curves.
"Growing up in the spotlight was quite possibly the worst for my self-esteem," she says. "When I started [ Modern Family ], I had a completely different body than what happened overnight at 12 years old. I was stick thin, I had no chest, I had no butt -- I had nothing. I was totally flat, and I was so sad about it. Then automatically, overnight, my body changed drastically. I was a D cup and had a bigger butt, and my waist was expanding. Everything was getting bigger. I automatically got this hate and judgment online."
Winter says it was her co-star, Sofia Vergara, that helped her come to accept her body transformation. "I had a great role model in Sofia growing up, with her being a curvy woman that was super proud of who she was and what she looked like,” she shares. “[Sofia] could see that I was struggling a little bit with how to deal with my body, and was always trying to give me advice, like, ‘Here are some brands that would look good on our body type,’ or ‘Wear whatever you want, and feel good about yourself.’”
Winter also credits her older sister, Shanelle Workman, whom she lives with, for encouraging her to be comfortable in her own skin. “I look up to her so much," she gushes. "I would listen to her talk to me, saying, ‘It doesn’t matter what other people think. You are who you are. It’s not going to change. Love yourself for who you are. People are going to hate regardless of what you do. You could conform to everything they say, and they’re still going to find something to pick. Or you could be yourself and be happy and not listen to what they say.’”
Winter decided to get a breast reduction when she was 17 -- her surgical scar can be seen in the photos for SELF -- and since then, has been outspoken on social media about loving one's body. "I think people make a lot of judgments about me based on what I wear and all the things that I do," she explains. "They kind of glorify and objectify a lot of the things that I do, and I wish people would just see me as the normal 18-year-old that I am. I’m doing the same things that everybody my age is doing."
When speaking to ET , Winter further defended the risque selfies she shares on Instagram and Snapchat. "Everybody is so hyped up on the fact that I post photos where my butt's out. It's a butt. Everyone has a butt," she said. "It's like, 'Let me live! I'm enjoying my life, you're enjoying your life, you should be posting your butt if you like it, too!'"

Fake Instagram 'hiking' photo prompts sister to tell the truth.
Women in Colorado are reportedly baring it all in half-naked photos after hiking to mountaintops , in a social media fad some say has helped their confidence soar.
Though topless photos of bare backs at soaring summits is not a new fad, The Denver Post reports that the trend has been “exploding” in popularity among female hikers in the Centennial State this summer.

“It feels fun, exciting and maybe a little risky to be naked in nature,” Kari Armstrong of The Boulder Hiker Chicks, a hiking club for women, explained. “When you have worked hard for your hike, or even if you haven’t, it is fun to do something a little silly and liberating to celebrate.”
According to Armstrong, another now-defunct women’s hiking group got the trend going in 2015.
Some participants say that the photo ops mark much more than a lighthearted moment.
Kelli Schulte told the Post that her topless photo atop the 14,000-foot Torreys Peak felt “big” and “important” after the 36-year-old left a relationship that battered her self-worth.
“With every step, I felt empowered. Like I was taking control of my life,” she explained. “Like I could and would be me again. I looked at my friend and said, ‘I’m taking one of those topless pics and I’m never giving up the things I love again.’ Then I snapped a couple of pics and I absolutely love them.”
Coral Scherma knew of the trend but was hesitant to join in herself, until hiking with her daughter-in-law at Kenosha Pass.
“I turned to her and said, ‘You know, I’m almost tempted to do one of those topless photos,’” the 58-year-old recalled, and she did just that. “It’s freeing and exhilarating. Men are out there hiking with their shirts off all the time.”
In the wake of her husband’s passing a few years ago, Scherma found solace in hiking as “therapy.”
“I’ve found more solace in the mountains than anywhere else, and I’ve discovered that I am much stronger — physically and emotionally — than I thought I was,” she revealed.
Another Facebook group for female hikers in Colorado is 20,000 members strong, and users often post topless mountaintop photos on the empowering page, The Gazette reports. Some share the photos with funny captions, while others more seriously discuss battles with cancer, eating disorders and bad relationships – and the pride they have for persevering through.
Hiker Lauren Robison playfully likened to bare photos to “giving the middle finger” to life's hardships.
“It was awesome to see so many women who have been through things in life that they have overcome,” she said. “And have that confidence in themselves to do such a bold thing.”

The paradise pic comes a day after Crawford shared a pic of her looking relaxed and sipping wine with her husband, Rande Gerber. "Enjoying spring break with my honey!" she wrote.
