Phys ed (including communal showers) and swimming did not escape scrutiny - even if nude males were in the lens. This digression into a defunct magazine is pertinent to the current topic because the images of nude male swimming it presented provided indisputable proof that the practice existed and was widespread for decades.

Many men over fifty experienced this when they were boys. So it is worth writing more about the YMCA and the cultural and religious background of its physical education programs.

Nude swimming at the YMCA is true, and I experienced it taking swimming lessons late 60s-early 70s. A key factor back then was that the YMCA was MEN ONLY. There was a separate YWCA in town for women. At YMCA summer camp, mid 60's, we boys were directed to swim nude as well. All counselors just stood around watching. I still have that weeks group photo, and the counselors were the most creepy looking characters you could imagine.
