Yes, They Can

Yes, They Can

Kerry Harvelle

It was a month after her Dad had married a widow with her one son, and nothing had changed, actually. It was another day, her lonely day. But now, she decided to go to her Dad’s cabin—one of his Dad’s properties because they want to go on their sweetest honeymoon for one month. Crazy, if she could mention it, and all she could do was nothing too. By taking a holiday in the cabin, it was not that bad after all.

The cabin was not in the middle of scary woods. She could still hear the birds chirping, breezy air, and the smell of the woods itself. She would love to spend all the time here without any blabbering of family problems and probably smoke her 40th cigarettes as long as she could handle it. But she knew that her Dad would not let her do that, even smoking was actually forbidden.

"It's my first time seeing you calm like this."

That sentence startled her. She cleared her throat, trying to erase the awkwardness between her and her step-brother. Yes, unfortunately, she has to take her step-brother with her during the vacation in the cabin. Sounds not fair, but she still remembers that he was still in the "family" ties.

"Thanks to the cabin and the whole thing here for making me like this," she said slightly blandly to him after she fixed her sitting position. He nodded, agreeing on what actually happened in the cabin environment.

From the first time she met him, she indeed always had sensed something weird about her step-brother, everyone called him ‘Cal’, and only she called him ‘Alex’. Not going to lie, the way Alex looked at her always made her a bit uncomfortable. Even though she knew he would not do something crazy to her, her instinct always said otherwise.

"Alex, can I always call you Alex?" She asked, starting to light her 5th cigarette this afternoon.

"Sure, why not?"

She hated when she had to talk only for the formality, and ironically, she always did this whenever Alex appeared in her surroundings—her own step-brother.

"So what do you think about this cabin?"

"Cool, your Dad have great taste, I see. Maybe that's the reason why my Mom has a crush on him."

Both of them laughed after Alex said the actual truth of their parents' love story, who maybe they were kissing in Venice now.

"Haven't heard about yourself, tell me," she actually did not know how to continue the flow of their conversation, that question just really popped into her mind.

"I... It's complicated, but as far as I sense myself, I love adrenaline things. It motivates me," he answered while averting his gaze to her, adding a slight smile to his lips.

"What adrenaline? Kissing your sibling?" Wild question indeed, but damn, she asked that to Alex anyway.

Alex was in his frozen mode immediately; he was indeed speechless at what his step-sister said to him.

"Damn, I didn't see that coming, Kay." He chuckled, feeling a bit nervous about what she said earlier. But Kay, she laughed so hard, even almost throwing her cough because of her smoke from her cigarette.

Her laugh then became slower after she saw Alex getting up from his wooden chair and walking to her.

"I'm a cinephile, sort of. Just watched a movie called The Dreamers and yeah siblings could kiss, if you really want to know the answer." He said that in his lower tone of voice, after he had knelt in front of her. His eyes almost darkened, and he slipped a tiny smirk on his smile.

"Fuck, wrong question. What should I do?!" She murmured her regret in her mind. She felt like her blood was running so fast inside, and it was not the cigarettes that made her struggle to breathe. It was Alex’s blue eyes, pierced her slowly, making her melt because of it.

She was trying to steal a glance, looking into his lips for a while. That was not bad for him, she swore to God it looked tasty. But unfortunately, he knew that Kay’s breath was shaky during that intimate look.

"You seem nervous, are you okay, sis?"
