This was a surprisingly mature and touching movie. Aaron, a super nerd, has a helicopter mother, who is totally suffocating, and goes off to an Ivy League college for engineering, but has a real knack for drawing. There actually is little about the raging hormones in a college dorm, but more about coping with serious problems. He meets a much older woman (Linda) who has a 14 year old daughter Beth. There is also a back story of a college woman named Darcey, who takes a fancy to Aaron. Linda has a lot of emotional baggage, and Beth is surprisingly strong willed (and wise beyond her years). Aaron falls for Linda, and Beth falls for Aaron. But it is not done in a tacky way. There are serious and relevant situations to cope with, and the movie handles them well. Towards the end of the movie, Aaron's world seems to start to collapse, and one is left wondering how it will turn out. This movie turned out for me much better than I expected it to be.
Seriously messed up mother and daughter lure innocent young man into their messed up lives. He goes willingly, following his hormonal urges. Messed up stuff ensues. Unbelievable ending (How could the daughter ever forget? Yuk. Messed up.)
Yes, I know. You think this is just another raunchy college comedy but wait a minute. Despite some dark moments (with strong language, drugs, and scary people), this movie ends up holding true to its noble intentions and tells an odd but uplifting story about people and relationships. I was skeptical at first, especially when meeting Beth, but this film takes a bunch of people with obvious flaws and casts them in a better light by the end. No one is perfect -- even the main character is passively stalker-ish -- but all have learned from one another and made some good decisions driven by their caring by the time credits were rolling. A worthy film overall. I appreciate the way it sees the good in many of the characters.
I'll admit, the urge to poke fun at the plot holes and, the at times, cliche presentation of archetypes like the prototypical un-experienced nerd, douchey college bro, the single mom with baggage, and who could forget the collegiate social justice warrior with a constant point to prove.

Once you glimpse past the this superficial veneer, you're presented with quite a complex story, fleshing out many heavy and difficult aspects of mental health, substance abuse, generational and gender struggles of coming-to-age, and more. It's at the core of these aspects, we find the real value of this film. Its quirky and cliche nature disarm you, while the aforementioned aspects play out and sink in.

Upon conclusion of this movie, you will have a well-earned smile on your face.... the kind of smile and feeling you get when you reach into your pocket and pull out a $10 bill you forgot was there. Go into this film (like reaching into your pocket) expecting nothing, and be delighted when you pull out that $10 bill... and realize this movie hit on some very serious points, led me on a nice journey, and finished it off with a smile on my face and warmth in my heart. Completely unexpected, but welcomed value.

I'm sure that most people who have seen the poster art and trailer think this movie is nothing more than a teen flick, where college bro gets to bed mother and daughter. If that's what you're thinking, you couldn't be more wrong.

The story is complex in that it deals with the perspective of life from the players in the film. Each character is looking for something, and are unsure what it is they're searching for, and which path will lead to success and happiness. It's a fun watch, but it deals with a variety of issues, not the least of which is belonging. Trying to find one's place in the world can be difficult for many of us, and that is what drives the main characters in "Cherry".

Contrary to what it may look like from the outside, this is not a cheap thrill sort of film. For that, I would recommend "Porky's" or "American Pie".
Come on people, this is where immaturity meets human frailties and when selflessness takes over it can all work out. A boy meets a mother and then a daughter who both value how he envisions life. The mother fights over opportunities lost and the daughter fights over the lack of opportunities and the boy becomes a man fighting against established norms. I will watch this once each year.
It's a little hard to believe that this 30 something woman would take such an interest in this 17 year old guy. Then there's a feeble attempt to explain why she is attending this ivy league school, but how is she paying for it? Once you accept this sort of thing, it's a nice story. Both the daughter and the student are played well. I was wondering where they filmed it, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was Kalamazoo. It's a professional looking production.
I really enjoyed this movie. It is a beautiful story of a college freshman who is trying to find out what he wants to do with his life in spite of his mother who befriends an older woman trying to better herself. The movie has several twists and turns that always keep you wondering what will happen next. The main characters and a few of the supporting characters have a lot to them and they were able to keep my interest. I think that two of them could have been a little more fleshed out but it didn't seem to harm the over all story of the movie.
