Two teenage girls who received death threats after sharing video of themselves giggling as they microwaved an innocent kitten last year have denied torturing the pet.
The South Portland teens, who were 15 when they were charged with felony animal cruelty in September, pleaded not guilty in court yesterday.
'They were just doing something they thought was funny,' their lawyer, Eric Cote, said. 'They wanted to make movies. They were playing ... I think they didn’t understand what took place here.'
The shocking video, which went viral after being shared on social media site Vine, provoked intense outrage. People from around the world encouraged the girls to kill themselves and suggested their families be 'slowly cut and bled to death'.
Amid the public outcry, prosecutors said the girls intended to hurt the eight-week-old kitten - who miraculously survived - and knew what they were doing.

In court yesterday, the judge ordered the girls to undergo a psychological evaluation and released them to the custody of their parents with conditions, Portland Press Herald reported.
'Torturing an animal is a marker for some serious behavioral problems but we don’t know if these defendants fit that profile,' Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson said, in explaining the importance of a psychological exam.
The South Portland High School students, who cannot be named for legal reasons, face court again on June 2.

In the short but harrowing video, one of the girls is shown putting the tiny cat inside the microwave, before quickly closing the door and turning it on.
The kitten is then seen panicking and scrambling a few moments later as one of the girls opens the door.
Police told the Boston Herald the girls appeared to be laughing in the video, and a spokesman said officers were investigating.
The girls were initially summonsed on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. The charge was upgraded to a felony when the the kitten's health deteriorated.
The court heard that while Miracle, the kitten, seemed fine in the days after the ordeal, her condition worsened after being placed in foster care.
Within a week, Miracle couldn’t walk, wasn’t eating, and had hypothermia, according to court records.
Prosecutors attributed her declining health to the microwaving.
She was nursed back to health by workers at the Animal Refuge League and has now been adopted.
According to a statement signed by Dr Leah Goodman of Forest Avenue Veterinary Hospital, the kitten 'certainly would have died, but for the aggressive and somewhat invasive treatment she received at the (Animal Refuge League).'
