Mum’s ‘creepy’ sex toy birthday gift to 16-year-old stepdaughter divides Reddit users

A 16-year-old girl has sparked online debate after revealing her stepmum’s “inappropriate” birthday gift.
Sharing on Reddit, the girl said she was left feeling “super uncomfortable” and “violated” when her father’s wife gave her a vibrator as a 16th birthday present.
The teen went on to liken the unusual gift to “sexual harassment”, saying that even though she knew her stepmother was trying to be a “cool mum” she was disturbed by the gesture.
But while many Reddit users slammed the unusual present was “creepy” and “gross”, others defended the “clueless” stepmum’s actions.
In her post, the teen asked for advice on whether she should tell her mother and father about the stepmother’s gift.
“I’m 16. Today is my birthday,” she wrote.

“My dad’s wife tried to surprise me with a vibrator. I know this wasn’t meant in a way to seduce me or anything, she’s just trying to get me to like her because it’s pretty clear I don’t.
“She gave a small speech that was like ‘I’m the COOL stepmum’, basically ‘Would your mum give you this?’
“This made me super uncomfortable though. It felt like sexual harassment even though it wasn’t.
“I told her I didn’t want it and she said that’s fine but I shouldn’t let stigma get in the way and she’ll keep it for me if I change my mind.
“Honestly I feel violated by this. I know this will be over if I just don’t bring it up ever again, but I kind of want to tell my parents.
“I know they’ll be so p***ed at her, but outside of me being uncomfortable I don’t know if it would be like mean to do that. Because they’ll really lose their s*** on her.
“But this just grossed me out so much and I already didn’t like her. Isn’t this an obvious line you don’t cross?”
The teen went on to explain that her stepmum was just 29 and they did not have a close relationship.
“We barely know each other, no I wouldn’t want the vibrator if we were friends either,” she said.
“I don’t like her because she had an affair with my dad while he was married to my mum.”
Many Reddit users were disgusted by the stepmother’s actions.
“Take this from someone who has given people vibrators as gifts in the past: this is very, very inappropriate,” said one.
“An adult woman should have zero stake or interest in how a 16-year-old gets off besides making sure they they’re safe.
“I think it would be a good idea to tell a parent, yes. If it were my daughter, I’d want to know if an adult were taking an active interest in her sex life so I could shut that down.”
Said another: “I love my vibrator, but it would be creepy as hell if a relative gave me one.”
Added a third: “Just imagine if this was a man who bought his 16-year-old stepchild a sex toy.”
Wrote one more: “You’re 16 ? That’s very creepy, and at best, inappropriate. I think you should tell your parents.”
Others suggested the stepmother had ”good intentions” and didn’t mean anything bad by the gift.
“The 29-year-old doesn’t know how to relate to a teenager, so she tries to think what she talked about with her friends that age and what she wished her mother gave her advice about,” one said.
“The stepmum’s intention is good on principle. But she didn’t ‘read the room’ or [see that her stepdaughter] never asked her anything about sex and she thought this might get them closer.”
Said another: “It sounds to me like a 29-year-old trying to be sex positive and kind of making a fool of herself.
“There are some 16-year-olds that would be comfortable with that gift, you aren’t. She just misjudged this one.
“I’d put it in the back of your closet and forget about it. It sounds like she meant well and she was trying to get you to like her.”
Responding to the “conflicting” advice, the teen said she had decided how to handle the situation.
“I’m going to go with my gut since this made me uncomfortable, even if she didn’t mean anything by it, I’m going to tell my parents,” she said.
