X-wing Alliance Joystick Patch
bomgoressyMy first joystick that I really liked was Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick when I was a kid playing the good old classic Star Wars X-Wing series games (X-Wing, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, etc.). After many years though, the center part deteriorated, and it would yaw to the right constantly, so I threw it away many years ago. Then, I tried Thrustmaster T16000M Joystick, and I used this to play XvT, X-Wing Alliance, and Star Citizen for a few months. Despite the joystick's better sensor, I didn't really like how the base was not heavy enough, and it was not ergonomic for me. My right hand hurt very much one day, and I had to stop playing altogether. My middle finger's tendons got so messed up that I freaked out. But I'm fine now after doing many stretches, warm-ups, wrist exercises, etc over a long time. So, I don't use it anymore.
A couple of things are worth pointing out here:1. This is a newsgroup pertaining to the game Jedi Knight, and it's
expansion Mysteries of the Sith. I'm not sure if there is a newsgroup for
X-wing Alliance yet or not, but I do know of alt.games.x-wing. That might
be a better choice in the future.2. On the bottom of the X-wing Alliance box, under the heading "Input
Devices" it reads "Joystick, Mouse, and Keyboard required". In the future,
I suggest you examine the system requirements of a game before you purchase
it. The RAM and cpu suggestions are usually a bit lower than what most
people would consider necessary for a decent gaming experience, but you can
probably trust them when they say you need a joystick.

Gosh, this brings back memories of playing x-wing on my 386SX-16 without a
joystick... you can't imagine what kind of pain in the butt it was to
tackle a tie using the arrow keys.Of course, I never actually finished the game until I bought a decent
joystick, by which time I could play it on a more capable 486DX-33.What made you think you could do it without a joystick? You'd probably make
it to the second or third mission, but barely. And forget trying to get
through the death star... and multiplayer? You'd be about as much good as
an asteroid. The only way you'd get kills is if someone crashed into you.Oh, and for future reference, last time I checked the best place to discuss
XWA right now is on the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter newsgroup --

Hi guys! I recently got a Saitek ST290 Pro which works pretty well for games like IL-2 Sturmovik and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, but in the TIE Fighter 1995 Collector's CD-ROM it feels like I have to push it a little too far before my craft starts moving. The problem persists even after calibrating the joystick in my host OS. Is there a good way to increase sensitivity, whether within DOSBox or some configuration utility for TIE Fighter?
0.74-* offers only the timed true/false as option, which does change the joystick behaviour a lot.
If that doesn't solve it, you could try a SVN build, like the ECE build which offers a deadzone setting and an option to work nice with joysticks that have an analogue stick that can only move in a circle (unlike old joysticks that moved in a square)
Hello, thanks for the reply! I'm using ECE, though I hadn't tried the deadzone setting before. I think I just copied over my old configs so I didn't see the new joystick settings. But yeah holy cow, after setting the deadzone to zero I think it handles a lot better! For Privateer I tried using AntiMicroX to emulate a mouse with the joystick which worked pretty well, but setting DOSBox's deadzone to zero and using the joystick the normal way seems to be slightly more responsive. It's not perfect, but good enough and this way I don't have to unplug my actual mouse to keep the game from getting confused ?.
Hello, how are you?Yesterday I was browsing my local Craigslist like site here in Portugal and saw a mint Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick for sale on my local area.I bought it the same day.I don't know why, but I kind of always wanted one.And for me Sidewinder peripherals are a great era of pc gaming and the time when Microsoft did some of the best hardware to this day. Now, I got home, and to test the stick I went to my steam library and launched X-wing alliance. The joystick works like new and it is great! Now I am looking for other games to use it.Since it is a joystick, I would prefer flight games, space Sims, mech games and such.I already added freespace and freespace 2 to my steam wishlist, but having never owned a joystick in my 27 years of pc gaming, I don't know what other games I should be looking at.Any suggestions?Thank you.Cheers
With all the buzz going around with the new GOG releases, I got the urge to play TIE Fighter again, since I already had a copy of TIE Fighter I installed it in Dosbox and after some tinkering it works flawless.... apart from the joystick which works but happens to drift away at the most awkward moment like when you just lined up a shot. ?
Now I knew LucasArts hosted a patch for this game, which happened to adress a joystick issue but the LucasArts website is no more and all other links seem to be dead or nonexistent (Patchesscrolls, Gamershell).
Does anyone know where I can still download this, if so you will have my eternal gratitude....BWONGGGG
Problem is, the GoG DOS version of TIE Fighter is the floppy version, not the CD version, so this won't help. Also specifically, that patch solves the problem where the game uses Axes 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2, and buttons 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 when using a joystick with 4 axes.
You described exactly the problem I am having and yes, sadly the patch did not solve it.
Actually I use a T16000M high precision joystick and in the training simulator when I force against the repelling I instantly fly into the opposite direction I was going, so apparently the programmers did program this behaviour deliberately to prevent this bug from happening.
Once I realized why I couldn't shoot or move (having to enable the mouse as a "virtual joystick" in the Configurator), I could run through a few of the training missions. I greatly missed having a pilot-style joystick available for this replay (though it's waiting for me whenever I want). But even with a mouse, I was able to get back in the groove of targeting, approaching, speed-matching, then dogfighting all those optimistic, democracy-minded, hopelessly sympathetic Rebel flyers.
I appreciate the work of the Total Conversion team, especially as they continue to update their work years after the initial release. From their trailer, it looks like there's a lot more customization I can do and far more amazing visuals to see once I actually start, you know, fighting lots of different fighters and ships. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be on eBay, looking for the right joystick that makes my inevitable replay even more justifiable. 75035a25d1
