W hrabstwie Antrim w Irlandii Płn. oddano do użytku wybudowany nakładem 18,5 mln funtów ośrodek dla turystów w pobliżu malowniczej "Grobli Olbrzyma" (Giant Causeway) - nadmorskiej formacji skalnej wpisanej na listę Unesco w 1986 r.

"Grobla Olbrzyma" składa się z 37 tys. ciasno ułożonych bazaltowych słupów uformowanych wskutek wybuchu wulkanu 50-60 mln lat temu. Większość kolumn ma podstawę sześciokątną. Ich wysokość sięga 2 metrów. Schodzą wprost do morza.
Podobne bazaltowe słupy, choć na mniejszą skalę, występują m.in. w słynnej szkockiej jaskini Fingal's Cave, w Kalifornii (Devil's Postpile National Monument), w Czechach oraz na Dolnym Śląsku, gdzie bywają nazywane kamiennymi organami - m.in. Lubaniu (Kamienna Góra).
Autonomiczny rząd Irlandii Płn. zabiega o przyciągnięcie turystów do prowincji, by zmienić jej negatywny wizerunek, jako miejsca konfliktu republikanów z lojalistami. Z myślą o nich na wiosnę br. w stulecie katastrofy, oddano do użytku ośrodek Titanica w Belfaście.
Wcześniej we współpracy z rządem Republiki Irlandii i Zakonem Orańskim władze Irlandii Płn. otworzyły ośrodek turystyczny w hrabstwie Meath na terenie słynnej bitwy nad rzeką Boyne z 1690 r., w której wojska protestanckiego króla Williama III pokonały odsuniętego od władzy, ostatniego katolickiego króla Anglii, Szkocji i Irlandii Jakuba II.
Nowoczesny ośrodek w okolicach "Grobli Olbrzyma", otwarty we wtorek w obecności pierwszego ministra prowincji Petera Robinsona i jego zastępcy Martina McGuinnessa, budowano 18 miesięcy w miejscu starego, który spłonął w 2000 r.
By nie odstawał od otoczenia, ściany upozowano na bazaltowe kolumny i na dachu posadzono trawę. Ośrodek jest wyposażony w przestrzeń wystawową, sklepy i kawiarnię.
