In November of 2005, Jeffrey Bedford, a participant on the show, sued ABC network for trading his wife for a gay man. He accused ABC of being dishonest, not allowing him contact with his wife, and making him miss college classes. He claims that when he ceased participating with the production of the show, ABC threatened that it would not tell him his wife's whereabouts and would not pay for his wife's return home. He is suing for over USD$10,000,000.00.

A standout among "drama" reality shows
In my opinion, there are 3 types of reality shows: competition reality shows like The Amazing Race and I Survived a Japanese Game Show (most of the reality shows I like are in this category), shows that follow people's everyday lives such as Jon and Kate Plus Eight and The Girls Next Door (I think these are boring and pointless), and "drama" reality shows such as those VH1 shows with the word "love" somewhere in the title (I absolutely hate most of these). Wife Swap falls into the "drama" category, but it's actually watchable. The premise is that mothers from two American families who are almost completely different in a certain respect trade places for two weeks. In the first week, the wives have to follow the new family's rules, but during the second week, they impose their own rules. I like this show, but I wouldn't say I love it. I won't go out of my way to watch it, but I'll watch it if it's on.

When ABC produced this show, FOX produced an almost identical show called Trading Spouses, which I think is slightly better.

I'm glad to see this show back! It's really interesting to watch how differently people live, and the different types of families out there. We won't always agree with them but we can always learn that there's no one size fits all. There are a few standouts for me. Another reviewer mentioned the Goss family and how they WISHED they had been allowed to carry on unedited with their views on religion. I don't agree with that, and I don't feel they were made to look bad. I actually loved the hippie couple, they took criticism and changes constructively, even saying "I see us being ongoing friends." Which the all-about-winning family probably just isn't down for, all they talked about even to each other was their kid's sporting events! The worst swap by far was the guy who is an unabashed literal male chauvinist pig - he was AWFUL, and you didn't get the feeling that he was pretending -if he wasn't willing to abide by the rules change, they should have scrapped his episode IMO, and you got the feeling that his entire life is on his terms, no compromise. The second was the family who apparently makes a living videoing brushing their teeth and other minutia. Although it seemed a welcome change for the off-grid family to connect to Wi-Fi, the rest of it seemed pretty crazy. That aside, there are a !of of surprises. The family with the massively pampered only child and the mega-successful dad who seemed pretty checked out with her until he TOOK the lessons from a gentle, laid-back soul who had a completely different approach to live and parenting and even got very emotional, the people who started out putting their attributes and dreams into their children, it's nice to see an open willingness to change when approached from an unbiased fresh perspective. To me, that's what makes this show really good. With or without celebrities, this is entertaining and informative.
I didn't realize when I purchased this season for $19.99 that there are only 2 episodes available out of season 1 for me to watch. Extremely disappointing!
I loved the original series but this is not as good. Instead of two weeks they spend one week so less interaction and there is no follow up on the families like the original.
Not as good as the orginal but still entertaining
The network that picked this up decided to change the format and I think it was for the worst. They shortened the swap to one week from two weeks and I think it just changes the flavor and content a LOT. I prefer the two weeks format because I think it's much harder for a family to hide their problems over 14 days than it is for them to hide it over 5-7 days. I also think it's much easier to help someone fix their issues and change for the better over 14 days than it is over a week. The new format is more surface level.
It appeared that this episode was really slanted to make the Goss family appear biased and out of order; there were many places that the conversation was cut off and they would flash to another scene for dramatic effect. If we had a camera in most homes today, it would be more like the Goss's. Life is messy and inconvenient and sometimes crazy; that is what makes it fun. There was never a time that they were actually allowed to completely talk thru what they believed in as Christians. But, I realize this is a "reality" show. The reality is they are feeding as much drama into the situation as they can edit in and sell. I am very proud of how Nina and Matt continued to be patient and not strike out at what was obviously a difficult situation. It is hard to be expected not to "judge" someone for their behavior and respect their beliefs when they are stepping on what you believe in and smiling about it.
I was so glad to see this show back on as I really enjoyed the show from years ago. But they are going over the top pushing the LGBTQ... and intersectionality agenda. For those who are not familiar, intersectionality is the idea that white straight people have too much power and anyone who's trans or gay and a minority other than Asian gets more victim points and the more everybody owes you because of how badly people in these groups have been treated. It's all a bunch of garbage that ends up creating reverse discrimination especially against white people but also men in general with the exception of LGBTQ men. It just brings more hate and dissension to an already overly divided nation. Discrimination by this show against white Christians is crystal clear and disturbing to say the least. The people featured in the episodes are interesting, just let them say what they actually say and quit trying to control the conclusions of the viewer, that would make it much better.
