What time is it? Summertime! Which means it’s time for relaxation and tons of late-night sleepovers watching your best summer movies with big vacation energy. Think romance on the North Shore of Hawaii on the eve of a major surfing competition, or pursuing your dreams of becoming an international superstar while falling in love with one at a summer camp you can’t afford. There’s just something about movies set in the summer that hit differently.
Below, we rounded up 31 of the best summer movies from lighthearted comedies and sweet romances to hair-tingling thrillers, so there’s something for everyone.
Lindsay Lohan’s magnum opus, The Parent Trap, follows identical twins Annie and Hallie (both portrayed by Lohan) who were separated at birth and later reunited at a summer camp. Together, the twins hatch a master plan to rekindle their parent’s love — lighthearted shenanigans ensue. It’s available to stream on Disney+.
No summer movie list would be complete without High School Musical 2, which shows the Wildcats crew (Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens) during their summer break pursuing jobs, passions, and romance. Friendships are threatened and unexpected summer flings take place in this intense musical drama. It’s available to stream on Disney+.
The Cheetah Girls 2 brings European summer dreams to reality as the talented quartet pursue pop stardom in Barcelona, Spain. Raven-Symoné and Adrienne Bailon reprise their roles as Galleria and Chanel respectively, bringing the drama and talent to the early 2000’s Disney Channel Original Movie. Stream the group’s European adventure on Disney+.
Big summer energy radiates off this 2003 DCOM. Serving as the finale for the television show Lizzie McGuire, the short film follows Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff) and her fellow classmates on a junior-high graduation trip to Rome, Italy. There, she’s mistaken for a famous Italian pop star and decides to impersonate her for the remainder of the trip — and perhaps fall in love with the singer’s co-star, Pablo (Yani Gellman). Join Lizzie’s whirlwind trip to Italy by streaming the film on Disney+.
This epic Olivia Wilde coming-of-age film follows best friends Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) as they vow to make the summer before their freshman year of college the best ever. Making up for lost time during high school, the friends delve into awkward first relationships and party fouls as they put their friendship to the test during three months of unadulterated “fun.” It’s available to stream on Hulu.
Summer loving, having a blast — and rewatching John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s musical romance set in the 1950s. Grease is the blueprint for teen summer romances as bad boy Danny (Travolta) and innocent Sandy’s (Newton-John) fling challenges their conflicting high school cliques. Oh, and we can’t forget the killer soundtrack that you’ll be singing long after the movie ends. It’s available to rent on YouTube.
Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, and Katie Cassidy team up to bring you this blockbuster of a summer film. After a summer trip to Paris goes awry, the three girls decide to pose as wealthy socialites and head to Monte Carlo to live out their wildest dreams...at least for a little while. It’s available to rent on YouTube.
Horror movies and summertime don’t seem like they’d go together, but this late ‘90s thriller featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Freddie Prinze Jr. is the exception. When four friends come together after covering up a hit-and-run, a rogue killer takes it upon themselves to threaten the group. Bloodshed and anxiety-induced thrills take centerstage in this summer flick. (Fun fact: This is the movie real-life sweethearts Prinz Jr. and Gellar met on!). It’s available to stream on HBO Max.
Based on the novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman, Aquamarine is the teen fantasy rom-com of your dreams. It has mermaids, love, and heartwarming female friendships — really, what more could you ask for? The 2006 film stars Emma Roberts, JoJo, and Sara Paxton in the titular roles as the newfound friends work to help a rebellious mermaid find true love. Dive into this fairytale story on YouTube.
What’s a summer slumber party without a little chaos? In this teen comedy, a group of best friends decide they’re fed up with their status at school and want to become a part of the popular kids. In order to succeed, they must complete a scavenger hunt and prove themselves worthy of the title. Alexa Vega, Scout Taylor-Compton, and more bring this comedy to life. The peak early aughts film is currently available to stream on YouTube.
With twelve kids, a laid-back family vacation to a remote resort quickly goes awry in this wholesome family movie that features family rivalries and no lack of shenanigans. The star-studded cast, which includes Steve Martin, Hilary Duff, Taylor Lautner, Alyson Stoner, and more, will make you wish you had eleven other siblings that you could relax by the lake with during warmer weather. This wholesome family comedy is available to stream on Disney+.
Perhaps not the ideal summer trip, Midsommar is one horror drama you won’t want to miss. When Dani (Florence Pugh) joins her boyfriend on a trip to Sweden to enjoy the famed midsummer festival, her once-in-a-lifetime trip quickly transforms into a living nightmare. This heart-racing flick is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
Nobody puts Baby (Jennifer Grey) in the corner, but they do re-live her intensely passionate summer romance with her resort’s camp instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze) more often than they’d like to admit. This quintessential ’80s romance sweeps viewers off their feet as they fall head-over-heels in love with this iconic duo. Watch the sultry film on Hulu now.
Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is an inspiring singer who wants to attend an exclusive (and expensive) rock camp to hone her skills. Unfortunately, she can’t afford the massive tuition fees and must work in the kitchen in order to attend. After teen pop star Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) overhears her singing, he tries to discover who is behind the mystery voice. Relive the summer drama over on Disney+.
Directed by Benson Lee, Seoul Searching is a South Korean coming-of-age movie that follows a group of foreign-born teens who come to the country’s capital to learn about their cultural heritage. The summer camp film, which takes place in 1986, features an array of wildly unexpected experiences throughout its near 2-hour run-time. The movie is now available to stream on Netflix.
Though it is rated R, Y Tu Mamá También, featuring Mexican actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, is a raunchy coming-of-age movie that follows two teens on their road trip across Mexico. With poignant political criticisms and an unflinching look at sex and drugs, this film perhaps isn’t your traditional summer flick, but one worth watching. Stream it on Sling now.
Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez, and Matthew Davis star in this surf-focused sports film that makes you want to book a beach vacation ASAP. The teen romance, which takes place on Hawaii’s North Shore, follows dedicated surfer Anna Marie (Bosworth) as she prepares for a major surf competition. Nothing can take her eye off the prize — except for maybe visiting cutie Matt Tollman (Davis). Catch all the dramatic waves in this flick now streaming on Hulu.
Nothing screams “summer!” quite like a musical set on a sunny Greek island. Ahead of her much-anticipated wedding day, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three men from her mother’s (Meryl Streep) past who might be her biological dad. All Sophie wants is for him to walk him down the aisle...but will her mother fess up to who the real dad is in time? Stream the film on Peacock TV to find out.
Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus bring Nicholas Sparks’ teen romance to life in The Last Song. When the rebellious Ronnie Miller (Cyrus) is sent to stay with her father over the summer, she fights any notion that “fun” is in the cards — at least until she meets Southern hunk Will Blakelee. The coming-of-age drama is available to watch on Disney+.
While summer doesn't take up as much of the movie as the school year, there's plenty of summer vibes to go around in the final To All the Boys film. The third movie sees Lara Jean and her sisters take Seoul, South Korea, on tandem bikes and later, she and her classmates jet off to New York City where they attend a rooftop party. Not much is more summery than that.
What’s a summer movie without heartthrob Timothée Chalamet? This teen crime drama takes place in 1991 Cape Cod and follows Daniel Middeton (Chalamet) as he becomes involved in the town’s underground drug trade over the summer. The film is available to stream on Sling.
So Kevin Kwan's original books set Crazy Rich Asians in the summer — and even though the movie eschews that for spring break, the vacation vibes in Crazy Rich Asians are strong. (Plus, they do make excellent use of Singapore's beaches.) Relish in all the lavish luxury the film has to offer, as you await the will-they-or-won't-they drama resolution of Rachel and Nick's romantic love story.
Summer’s quintessential sport, baseball, takes center stage in this early nineties flick. Set in the 1960s, a new kid in a small town finds a group of unexpected friends among a ragtag baseball team. It’s a wholesome family filled with adventure and plenty of great summer vibes. The classic film is available to stream on Hulu.
One can never have too many summer musicals — might we suggest Teen Beach Movie for your next viewing? Starring Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell, you might recognize some of the film's catchy music from TikTok. The quirky film follows surfers that are somehow transported onto the set of a beach party movie and are forced to sing and dance in a battle to hangout on the beach. Watch the film on Disney+.
Even superheroes deserve a summer vacation — in this Spiderman sequel, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), MJ (Zendaya), and the rest of his classmates on a two-week European excursion. Instead of the lighthearted trip, Parker has to help save the world...again. The film is available to watch on Starz.
Starring America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively, and Alexis Bledel, this early aughts film is based on the novel of the same name and follows four young friends as they spend a summer away from each other. In the name of friendship, they share the same pair of magical jeans that just so happens to fit each of them. Watch it on HBO Max now.
Another summer-focused DCOM worthy of mention, Rip Girls follows Sydney Miller (Camille Belle) who moves to Hawaii with her family. There, she learns to surf and reconnect with the memory of her late mother. The film is available to stream on Netflix.
Post-graduation, Daphne Reynolds (Amanda Bynes) leaves New York for London in the hopes of reconnecting with her biological father (Colin Firth) who happens to be a lord with Prime Minister aspirations. Big city adventures and a blossoming romance await. Stream the film on Netflix now.
Based on the series of novels by Ann M. Martin, The Babysitters Club film follows a group of friends as they spend their summer babysitting — and eventually running an entire summer day camp for younger kids. Together, they must protect their blooming business at any cost, while supporting each other’s personal struggles. The film is available to stream on Prime Video.
If we’re being honest, most Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen films give off big summer energy (ahem, we’re looking at you Holiday In the Sun), but none more than the wholesome mid-nineties film It Takes Two. Similar to Parent Trap, Amanda Lemmon, an orphan, and Alyssa Callaway, a rich boarding school kid, look eerily similar. When they meet at a summer camp by chance, they decide to switch places and try to make their respective caregivers fall in love. The film is available to rent on Vudu.
Stephen King’s take on a summer film is, naturally, a bit morbid as a group of young friends venture to find the body of a missing body in Castle Rock. The coming-of-age film, which is set in 1959, stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland and delves deep into the bonds of young friendship and how life can change in only an instant. It’s available to stream on Hulu.
In 2017's Girls Trip, college friends Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish reunite to travel to the annual Essence Festival in New Orleans. Amazing parties, wild nights, and endless hijinks ensue — and a healthy dose of feel-good summer friendship energy to boot. It's available to purchase on YouTube.
OK OK, so the movie adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda's musical isn't quite out yet, but based on the trailer alone, it's going to be a major movie of the summer. Set in the hot New York City heat in Washington Heights, the film tells the story of “a block that was disappearing," through the eyes of bodega owner Usnavi and the dreams he and his family and friends hold dear. It's a musical extravaganza, with plenty of swimming pools and sun to go around. In the Heights will be in theaters on June 18.

A MARRIED teacher who had drunken sex with two teenage students - including one on her birthday - has avoided jail.
Lynne Burge, 33, sent nude selfies and slept with the two boys - aged 16 and 18 - who attended Muenster High School in rural Texas - about 80 miles from Fort Worth.
But the mom-of-two claimed she could not remember their romps because she was too drunk, cops said.
The younger student told investigators he hooked up with the culinary arts teacher after they swapped Snapchat messages.
They ended up at her home after driving around rural back roads while drinking alcohol - an illicit rural pastime known as "backroading".
The pair began kissing and took off each other’s clothes before she performed oral sex on him - and they then had sex in the kitchen, prosecutors said.
The student then “fell asleep in Burge’s kid’s bedroom before she woke him up and asked him to get in bed with her,” police files said.
Burge’s children were not at home at the time of the sordid tryst - during autumn 2017.
The older student said he had unprotected sex with Burge on her birthday in March last year at her sister’s home.
They had also gone “back roading,” police documents said.
Burge told officers she was drunk on both nights she slept with the students.
I didn’t think I did because my clothes were on. Usually if that happens your clothes aren’t on
Asked by cops if she had sex with the pupil who she admitted waking up in bed with, she said: “I don’t know. I hope not.
“I don’t know. I didn’t think I did because my clothes were on. Usually if that happens your clothes aren’t on.
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I can’t remember anything.”
She also said she could not remember details of her intimacy with the 18-year-old because of her drinking.

Burge pleaded guilty on Wednesday to two counts of improper relationship between educator and student.
A third charge, online solicitation of a minor, was dismissed.
She could have been jailed for up to 40 years but was put on five years’ probation and fined $5,000.
Burge will not have to register as a sex offender but must surrender her teaching licence, her lawyer Rick Hagen said.
Burge, he added, was “incredibly remorseful, she is ashamed.”
“These cases are always difficult,” he said. “There are no excuses. Lynn is responsible.
“She made mistakes and she immediately accepted responsibility.
“Alcohol was in issue in this case. While it was an issue, it was not an excuse.
“Lynn has not had a drop of alcohol since she was accused.
“She is committed to AA and has been to a counselor on a regular basis.”
Cooke County District Attorney John Warren said in a statement to local media: “After consulting with the families of the victims and receiving their input, we believe that this is a just and appropriate plea.
“The victims in this case will now be able to begin to put this behind them and move on with their lives.”
It is not know if Burge is still with her husband.
