The Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity was invented on a napkin at Celtic Mist Pub on St. Patrick’s Day in 2008. We are a “race” through Downtown Springfield, Illinois. This year’s race will not be timed. We have donated over $1.5 million since 2008. The race includes beer, corn dog, donut, and ice cream stops along with live music and entertainment throughout the race route. The 5K is followed by a street party that includes cold Pepsi, Coors beer, barbecue, and more live music. All profits go to charity. Please help us continue supporting our charities in 2021.

Q: Do I have to be a “real runner” to participate in this race? Hell no! We welcome people of all athletic levels. We don’t even care if you finish the race although we encourage you to complete at least one of the two laps to enjoy all of our tasty treats along the way!
Q: Are costumes allowed? Duh. The more over the top, the better and there are prizes for best group and individual costumes!
Q: Can I bring my kids along? Absolutely! We have had many “junior fat asses” in our years, and we think they have a great time as well. There is even a kids’ area at the street party after the race so they can have a little street party fun as well! Just try not to leave them unattended while you belly up to the beer truck!
Q: So, where does all my money go? Charity! You can find a list of all of our charities on the website. The great thing is that, unlike some other races, we are completely run by volunteers, so none of your money goes to pay salaries. Also, we have kick-ass sponsors, entertainers, and food vendors that donate their money, time, and services which allows us to give so much to charity- over $1,000,000 to date!
Q: What if I sign up, but then find out I can’t make it? Can I get a refund? Sorry, no one pulls out of the fat ass! But you can “click” on the link provided in your e-mail confirmation and designate someone else to take your place.
Q: What does registering as an “Ultimate Fat Ass” or a “Junior Fat Ass” (only those under age 21) get me? The 5k treats along the race route, a commemorative T-shirt, Hog Roast at the Street Party (from 11-3) following the 5k including cold Pepsi and Coors products (only for those with ID showing they are age 21 and over)
Q: When will the food be served on Saturday? There will be food served from 11 am – 2 pm
Q: How Long is the Fat Ass Street Party? It’s from 11 am – 3 pm on Saturday
Q: Will there be Food Friday Night? We will have great food available for purchase from local food truck vendors.
Q: How much money do I need to bring the day of the race? Technically, none. That’s the beauty of paying and signing up before the race. If you pay for the Ultimate Fat Ass (which is our recommendation), all of the food, beverages, and fun are included, which means you don’t need anything else (unless of course, you want to buy some Fat Ass Swag). We will have memorable Fat Ass Gear for sale on both Friday and Saturday, so it wouldn’t hurt to have some extra dough.
Q: So what’s the deal with this Friday night party? We think it’s important to properly prepare for your race, which to us means some adult beverages, good food, and fun music! You have to drag your fat ass downtown to pick up your packet anyway, so why not stop for a drink, some food, a little music and a lot of fun. Carb loading is important before a big race, right?
Q: I can’t come race day, but I would like to check out your Friday night party. Is that allowed? Of course, it is! The more, the merrier!
Q: I’m from out of town, are there any places I can stay so I can enjoy both nights of fat ass fun? Great question. We have 2 downtown hotels that are literally located right off of where our street party takes place. No driving and no need for a cab. Just walk right up to your room when you are all partied out! Find links to these hotels with a special fat ass price on our website!
Q: Will I need my ID? Absolutely. Since we are serving beer, you will need to be able to show that you are age 21 or older.
Q: What time is the 5k? Saturday morning at 10 A.M. Sharp. (The streets start getting shut down by 9:30 so get here early for easier parking)
Q: Where does the race start? At the corner of 6 th and Adams lining up to the North based on your expected pace. Walkers should gather closer to the corner of 6 th and Washington.
Q: When is Packet Pick-Up? Friday night from 4 pm – 9 pm and Saturday morning from 7:30 am – 9 am in the Doubletree Ballroom.
