Writing the Pilot: The Structural Requirements That Separate Working Pilots from Developmental Drafts

The television pilot script has a structural mandate that distinguishes it from both the feature film and from subsequent episodes of the series it is launching. The pilot must simultaneously tell a satisfying story in its own right, establish the series' tone and world with sufficient clarity, and demonstrate that the premise has enough engine to sustain additional episodes. Meeting all three requirements produces the pilot that advances; meeting only one or two produces the pilot that generates interest in the writer without generating an order.

The structural elements that readers assess at each stage: the concept clarity (is the series' premise legible from the pilot?); the character establishment (are the central characters sufficiently defined and sufficiently interesting to sustain a series?); the tone consistency (does the pilot maintain the specific tone -- dramatic, comedic, ironic, procedural -- that the series requires?); and the engine demonstration (does the pilot show that there are stories to tell beyond this first episode?).
