A tiny baby wrapped in a blanket with string was among the sobering scenes at Manchester Airport

A tiny baby wrapped up in a blanket tied with string, shivering and cold children clinging to their parents in clothes they had been wearing for days.
These are the scenes at one UK airport as refugees arrived after managing to get out of Afghanistan.
The Manchester Evening News reported that some wore nappies they had on when they first boarded their flights.
As they entered the terminal at Manchester Airport they were welcomed by volunteers who handed them toys to distract them.
Each of Wales' 22 councils have pledged their support in providing housing for those fleeing, but exact numbers are not yet known.
Back at the airport, one little girl concentrated hard on a single page of a colouring book for an hour, not saying a word as she worked with the crayons provided by the Red Cross .
She clutched the book tightly to her chest when she was told she could take it with her to the quarantine hotel she will spend the next ten days in.
These were the sobering scenes as hundreds of refugees - adults, children and babies - arrived in the city from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
Ru Shepherd is an emergency response volunteer with the Red Cross who has been helping at Manchester Airport.
As well as handing out essentials like water, hot meals and blankets, Ru has also provided a friendly face to the ‘bewildered’ new arrivals.
“We were there to make sure they knew they were safe, to provide fluids and food and give them a change of clothes,” she says.
“It could be as simple as a bottle of water and some socks and shoes.
“Some had been in their clothes for up to three days.
“They were bewildered, exhausted. Everyone, including the children, were so placid and grateful.
“They were so very polite and just grateful.
“They were told what would happen next and where they would go - because they had no idea. They didn’t even know which part of England they were in.”
Describing the mood in the terminal as the displaced Afghans arrived, Ru says: “The passengers were very sombre and very quiet.
“I think they didn’t know what to expect and the hustle and bustle was from the agencies trying to get them all processed and making sure their needs were met.
“There were some poorly people and some very new babies. Really small babies and their cries were not like anything I had heard. Very meek. It was like a cat meowing.”
The Red Cross were one of a number of agencies providing support for the new arrivals during several flights into Manchester Airport - the last of which landed on Saturday morning.
They arrived holding just the few meagre belongings they could carry.
There were no carry cots or prams available so youngsters - some just days old - were clutched by their parents. Babes in arms.
Volunteers provided hot meals, water, snacks, blankets, shoes and socks and clothing if it was needed.
“I can’t forget the children’s faces when they saw the toys and teddies,” Ru says.
“There was no snatching and grabbing, they were just grateful to be somewhere safe.
“There was a lady there who, as her children lay on the floor sleeping on a blanket, wept quietly. She didn’t know where her husband was.
“It was a case of reminding her that this wasn’t the end. The support will continue.
“It’s still on my mind. As team members we’ve all been reaching out to each other to make sure we’re okay. It’s a harrowing thing to witness and be part of.”
Run continues: “There were children there I had to put socks on for. They haven’t worn socks before so they’re not used to it.
“Some had had their nappies on for hours and hours.
“One boy’s sandals were strapped together with a couple of elastic bands. He was about ten.
“We gave him some of those one-size slippers you get in hotels and they were too big for him. But then we found him some proper shoes and he said he was happy enough with the slippers. We told him to take both.
“There were two twins and just to hear them giggle when they were playing - I don’t know when it would have been the last time they laughed.
“One little girl spent an hour colouring in one picture. She could see nothing else. All that mattered was this colouring. I helped her sign her name and she was so proud of it.
“When she realised she could keep the book she hugged it.
“The things we take for granted they are so grateful for.
“There was a baby in a towel held together with string. The baby was 29 days old.
“We took her mother to the bathroom and she changed the baby, gave her a grow, a tiny hat, booties on their little feet and a beautiful hand knitted cardigan with pearl buttons.
“The mother held my hand with tears in her eyes, just grateful. I’m sure that was the first outfit that baby had.
On Tuesday (August 31), Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said the number of UK nationals left behind in Afghanistan is in the "low hundreds" after the western military presence came to an end in the country.
The Cabinet minister said he was unable to give a "definitive" figure on how many Afghans the UK had failed to airlift to safety after the Taliban seized power.
Mr Raab was also forced to deny a Pentagon leak suggesting the US wanted to close a gate to Kabul airport ahead of the deadly bombing, but kept it open to assist the British evacuation.
And he did not rule out the RAF taking part in air strikes to target the so-called Islamic State terror group in Afghanistan.
The US ended a deployment that began in the wake of the September 11 attacks two decades ago when it withdrew its remaining forces from Afghanistan on Monday.
