The dimensions and shape of human vagina are of great importance in medicine and surgery ; there appears to be no one way, however, to characterize the vagina 's size and shape. [1] In addition to variations from individual to individual, the size and shape of a single person's vagina can vary substantially during sexual arousal and intercourse . [2] Carrying a baby to term, or parity , is associated with a significant increase in the length of the vaginal fornix . [1] The potential effect of parity may be the result of a stretching and elongation of the birth canal at the time of vaginal birth . [1]

There are a number of studies that have been done into the dimensions of the human vagina, but it has not been as intensively researched as penis size . [1]

A 1996 study by Pendergrass et al. using vinyl polysiloxane castings taken from the vaginas of 39 Caucasian women, found the following ranges of dimensions: [3]

A second study by the same group showed significant variations in size and shape between the vaginas of women of different ethnic groups. [4] Both studies showed a wide range of vaginal shapes, described by the researchers as "Parallel sided, conical, heart, [...] slug" [3] and "pumpkin seed" [4] shapes. Barnhart et al., however, weren't able to find any correlation amongst the race and the size of vagina. They were also unable to characterize the vaginal shape as a "heart, slug, pumpkin seed or parallel sides" as suggested by the previous studies. [1] [5] A 2003 study by the group of Pendergrass et al. also using castings as a measurement method, measured vaginal surface areas ranging from 66 to 107 cm 2 (10.2 to 16.6 sq in) with a mean of 87 cm 2 (13.5 sq in) and a standard deviation of 7.8 cm 2 (1.21 sq in) [6]

Research published in 2006 by Barnhart et al., gave the following mean dimensions, based on MRI scans of 28 women: [1]

A 2006 U.S. study of vagina sizes using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) on 28 volunteers between 18 and 39 years old, with heights ranging from 1.5 to 1.7 metres, and weights between 49.9 and 95.3 kilograms, revealed a greater than 100 percent variation between the shortest (40.8 millimetres) and the longest (95.0 millimetres) vagina length. [7]

Given the large range in vaginal dimensions noted in studies such as the above, many fitted vaginal devices, for example pessaries , do not adhere to a "one-size-fits-all" principle. [8]

Lawrence, citing Masters and Johnson 's Human Sexual Response (1966), states that pages 73 and 74 of that book show that typical vaginal depth in Masters and Johnson's participants ranged from 7–8 cm (2.8–3.1 in) in an unstimulated state, to 11–12 cm (4.3–4.7 in) during sexual arousal with a speculum in place. [2]

MANHOOD Why is the penis mushroom-shaped?
OH MAN! What is a circumcised penis and why do some men have them?
HOT STUFF Heatwave warning to men as soaring temperatures raise risk of health problem
IT’S a big issue for some men and talking about it is no small matter.
But performance poet Ant Smith has won praise for his bravery after talking about his micro penis and penning a book about it. Here's the long and short of it...
Ant Smith is a 50-year-old performance poet from Barking, East London, who is married to his sound recordist wife Christine.
He first gained attention when he started performing a poem where he revealed the size of his manhood.
The poet wrote the verse called Shorty and used his humour to tackle the issue of his small penis.
Ever since, he has had an overwhelming response from men, who claim they also suffer from the same problem but are too afraid to speak out about it.
In 2015, he also threw an international party in London called the Small Penis Party as part of a documentary on the issue.
Ant has previously said that he has spent more than 30 years of his life worrying about the size of his manhood - but it's not known if his is the world's smallest.
He said: "Growing up it was a considerable embarrassment to me.
"At about 3.5in it wasn’t so small but seemed so much smaller than everyone else’s.
"I was teased at school and it made me so self-conscious I didn’t have sex until I was 21.
"I would get embarrassed if the condom slipped off as my penis was too small to keep it on.
"It isn’t something you can openly discuss with your friends, even though so many men have a hang-up about it.
"Somehow the size of your penis has become linked to how much of a 'man' you are, which is nonsense. My wife assured me my size made no difference.
"I tackled the issue with humour and wrote a poem about my tiny willy called Shorty."
Ant has written a book about his experiences called The Small Penis Bible.
It is described as a self-help book, that is filled with real-life stories and humour.
The Small Penis Bible is also said to answer everything about penis size anxiety, penis enlargement and living with a small penis.
Ant has also been hired by blood-testing company Thriva to front a campaign telling people: "There's nothing wrong with a little prick".
The world's first preventative health service wants people to conduct blood tests from home to keep a track on their health.
The 50-year-old said: "While playful, it's a serious message, we will all be better off if we properly monitor what's happening inside our bodies that we perhaps can't see in the mirror.
"It's something some people are scared of addressing, even if all it takes is a small prick."

Elite Daily writer Jamie Leelo spoke to a former vag waxer by the name of Mel who broke down all the ins and outs of the thousands of vaginas she saw, and came up with FIVE major vagina archetypes.
Of course, not all vaginas fit into these categories, and, hell, what are categories anyway? As Mel noted, "This isn’t a mathematic algorithm. This is just to help women understand this weird ‘secret’ [the appearance of our vaginas] we keep from our friends and society at large is not as scandalous or peculiar as we may have thought."
But, for simplicity's sake, we're gonna refer to the vulva here as a vagina, mmkay? Also, these all have "Ms." names, but ANYBODY can have a vagina.
The Barbie look features a vag where the labia majora (outer vagina lips) completely contain the labia minora (inner vagina lips).
This vag model is much more common .

A model has gone viral after sharing an image of herself by the pool in an incredibly skimpy swimming costume
We've seen some bizarre swim wear trends as of late - from the underboob bikini to the towelkini.
There was also the drawstring bikini, which saw women pulling their straps tight, leaving very little to the imagination.
But this bizarre look has just been given an update by Playboy model Cassandra Sienega who took the style to new extremes while celebrating her birthday.
In a snap on Instagram Cassandra, who posts under the username cjsparxx, showed off a pink bikini that barely covered anything and has been branded "the world's tiniest" by one fan in the comments.
The unusual swimming costume is made from three very small scraps of pink fabric, which are just held onto her body by see-through strings.
The bikini is so small, that if you saw her from the back, you'd be excused for thinking she was totally naked.
Obviously many people approved of her choice of swim wear, telling her how great they thought she looked.
But there were some who couldn't resist poking fun at the whole thing.
One person compared the bikini to bandaids (plasters).
They said: "Should have just used bandaids."
Another wrote: "And setting the record for worlds tiniest bikini."
A sarcastic user commented: "Soo much material on that bikini! What are the washing instructions?"
While another posted: "You're too covered up in this photo."
Others said she looked "mind blowing" and "amazing".
According to News.com.au, the bikini is from SnSbikinis, a brand that is known for being the “sexiest swimwear and clothing” and often features in publications such as Playboy, Maxim and FHM.
Cassandra's post, which shows her leaning against a glass wall by a pool has now accumulated more than 39,000 likes.
She captioned the photo, saying: "Celebrated my 34th birthday in style at @thesapphirepool with friends. Hands down the best birthday EVER! I’ll definitely be back!!!"
