The World Cup 2021 is back to its expected format; three events with a total of nine races. Six of the nine events are individual races while each of the three events also offers one relay each.
World Cup round 1 with European Championships
World Cup 2020 was planned to be the first year under the management of the World Cup consortium, consisting of IOF and Verein Swiss Cup. The full cup had to be cancelled as result of the corona situation which of course was a major disappointment for athletes, teams, fans and organizers. After this unexpected and disappointing pause, the new World Cup is now to take back the initiative to upgrade the World Cup status.
The first round, in Switzerland, was originally planned for 2020. It also has status of European Championships and is fully sprint focused. The event follows the championship formula with Sprint, Knock-Out Sprint and Sprint Relay.
The second round, in Sweden in August, was originally scheduled for June 2021 and as the first round of the year. With the changes of other events, the new date will allow teams to fully focus on the Nokian Tyres World Championships in July. The program in Sweden is fully forest focused.
The decisive round, in Italy, is moved from 2020. The program still includes the planned Long Distance and Middle Distance. New is that the very final race will be a Sprint Relay.
Most of the races, if not all, will be broadcasted live on orienteering.sport and on national TV in several countries.
The three venues are competing about having the largest wow factor; the picturesque and charming Swiss town Nuechâtel, the wilderness of the Swedish Idre Fjäll or the stunning beauty of Italian Cansiglio dressed in autumn colours.

For the Club World Cup tournament planned for 2020 and postponed to early 2021, see 2020 FIFA Club World Cup. For the expanded Club World Cup originally planned to be hosted by China in 2021, see Future FIFA Club World Cup (China).
The 2021 FIFA Club World Cup is scheduled to be the 18th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, a FIFA-organised international club football tournament between the winners of the six continental confederations, as well as the host nation's league champions. The tournament will be hosted by Japan in December 2021.
Bayern Munich are the defending champions, but cannot defend their title after being eliminated in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Originally, an expanded Club World Cup in China was planned to be held in June and July 2021.[1][2] However, due to fixture congestion caused by the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on football, the Tokyo Olympics, UEFA European Championship and Copa América were postponed from mid-2020 to mid-2021. As a result, FIFA announced in March 2020 that they would postpone the expanded Club World Cup to later in 2021, 2022 or 2023.[3][4]
On 4 December 2020, the FIFA Council announced that the Club World Cup, using the previous format, would be held in late 2021 and hosted by Japan.[5]

Therefore, the participation of the Japanese league winners will only be officially confirmed after the elimination of the last Japanese team (other than the league winners themselves) from the 2021 AFC Champions League. If the Japan league winners win the AFC Champions League, they will enter the second round.
