I've looked for 9x18 penetration tests but found very little information. Does anyone know of any websites this information is available? Thanks in advance.

Here's one I found but those 9x18 loads aren't common as to what's available today.

TACTICAL FORUMS , the sciencetists dudes have info on 9mak but like the same i give , that HP Mak doesnt give sufficiant penetration when it expands and same penetration as BALL when it dont

so they and i only reccomend BALL for 9mmMak self defense and that the calibre is not entirely up to MODERN standards of self defence .

before you get offended at that please rememember the Mak (IMO) was developed as a COMMIE TOOL of COLDWAR PROSECUTION rather than self defense :neutral: no matter how much we love the 'lil pistol :smile:

I concur. 9X18 JHP's typically penetrate 6-11 inches in calibrated gelatin. Not much. FMJ will do like what was already posted, 19-21 inches.

When I carried my Mak I just carried FMJ.

I think ball is the only way to go with this caliber, or with 380, and especially .32 acp. Just my opinion.
For the record, I performed some informal exp. with the Mak a while ago when we could get Bulgarians in pretty cheap. The front panel of a 1970's era German Flak jacket would cleanly stop this round at all angles and ranges, including point blank. Never dreamed of using anything but FMJ for that experiment. I also dispatched a few animals with the Mak and the results were interesting. The first was a rough grouse in northern Minnesota, which I encountered while building a deer stand. I shot clean it clean thru with the mak and had to finish it with a stick. It was hard to tell where the bullet impacted, as there was very little visible damage. Seemed fitting that it was almost unedible.
The second shooting was a LARGE Florida Armadillo that had been rooting up my yard. He was huge, the biggest I ever remember seeing. I shot him at 20 yards with a corbon hollowpoint. He ran around in a circle for 5 minutes before falling over. Upon examination, the bullet exploded on his outer shells, sending in fragments of whatever. Of course, I wouldn't label this animal of soft skin, they are pretty tough. I can only guess that ball would have been more effective. Also, 9mm mak in ball out penetrates standard 38 spec. loads in multiple phone books, often passing through 3.5 inches of the county variety here in Fla, neccesitating a 2nd copy. This is hardly a formal evaluation but wanted to throw it in this thread.

For the record, a .36 Colt Navy sends an 80 gr ball at around 1050 fps or a 120 gr conical at about 850 fps. It was Wild Bill's favorite gun and perhaps the most widely used handgun caliber of the Civil War. However British officers found it to be severly lacking in stopping power when used against "the Natives".

I have two mags loaded up with the Silver Bear 115gr HP. I haven't seen any other 9x18 HP worth using over FMJ ammo. Too bad I haven't seen any of the 115gr Silver Bear in a few of years. The ammo was accurate, recoil was smoother with less snap, and I had 100% reliability with it in my Bulgarian Mak.

I used that same HP in my Mak (Bulgarian). It was very good ammo, very reliable. Come to think of it, after my Armadillo "incident", I never shot Corbon again. Are you sure about the 115gr weight for 9X18 Mak though? It seems like the stuff I was using was around 95gr, with a full 9x19 projectile at 115gr.

The 115 grain weight is correct, it was made for both Silver Bear and Brown Bear labels, too bad it was discontinued, it made the 9x18 a worthy caliber. Of course there are still some handloads that could get the job done too.

A +P load for 9x18 Mak would be a good thing, as long as they covered the box with warnings about using in the wrong pistols.
The 115 was discontinued? That is too bad. Those were nice rounds for 9x18. I just thought they were hell to find lately. That explains that.

Perhaps its time to inquire with some email to the importer. May make some differance, but its a long shot.

Its kinda too bad - the 115 gr Silver Bear Load was what I used in my Bulgy too - until it ran out! Now I'm stuck with the 95 gr HP in SB, but am not too certain about its specific performance.

seems to indicate Barnaul (ie the maker of the 'Bears?) would give about 7-8" penetration in ballistic gelatin expanding to .55". Thats probably "adequate" for civilian CCW uses. Afterall, a civilian likley won't need the 12" penetration the FBI protocol calls for as LEO's have a togher task usually. Most civilian self-defense encounters are likley to be frontal shots at 3-7 yds. As well, my Mak is strictly "summer" carry or not likley to confront people heavily layered up.

So for that task its likely adequate and allows 9 rapid initial shots and a quick reload of a beefier .380 type round vs 5 shots for .38 spl (and a slow reload) out of your typical snubby.

Are there better choices? Sure - in fact post-Katrina when we had the crime surge in the Houston area my "always" carry (particulary at night) was more likely to be my G19 carried IWB with at least 1 standard cap mag. Thats 30 rounds of Golden Sabre 124gr +P that could be deployed effectively. Its just that it is slower to draw from IWB than it is when I'm pocket carrying my Mak or snubby.

Another porn star who worked in the US adult entertainment industry has been found dead.
Olivia Lua, 23, died in a rehab facility in West Hollywood on Friday morning.
The actress, who used the screen name Olivia Voltaire, is believed to have died from mixing prescription drugs and alcohol .
It is not known how she got the substances into the facility where she was being treated for addiction.
Her agency, LA Direct Models, confirmed her death to XBiz , the porn industry's news outlet, on Friday.
Olivia's death is the fifth in just six months across the US and Canada. Four other women have died from suicide, accidental overdose and UTIs.

In his statement, Derek Hay of L.A. Direct Models said Lua had been battling addiction for some time and was seeking help.
He said it was a 'coincidence' that the two most recent deaths were of women who belonged to L.A. Direct Models.
'Much comment has recently been made on the number of adult stars having passed in the last year and with great sadness we must inform that the list has grown longer.
'Olivia joined LA Direct Models in April 2017, though had not been available for work since early October of last year, as she had been facing some personal challenges that had seen her in residential rehab for a period of nearly three months and from which she had been out for about a month, hoping to make a return to work in the early part of this year.
'We learned today that she had returned to a different facility in West Hollywood after a relapse, approximately a week ago, at which she was found deceased this morning.
Lua had been seeking help for substance abuse problems. Before she died, she tweeted a final selfie (left) and said: 'No one alive can be an angel forever'
Olivia's agency said they were shocked by her death. She had not worked for some time due to her addiction problems
'Family and close friends [said] they had deep concern at the volume of prescription drugs prescribed to Olivia and the danger this posed [to] her. If this was mixed with recreational drugs or alcohol, it is believed this to be the cause of her passing,' he said.
Olivia Nova, who died in Las Vegas earlier this month aged 20 from sepsis that is believed to have been caused by a UTI, also worked for LA Direct Models.
Hay said it was merely a 'coincidence' that the two most recent deaths were of women who belonged to his agency.
'We at Direct Models obviously can barely believe we are issuing a notice such as this, not once but twice, in such a short space of time.
'The coincidence that both of these models chosen stage names is Olivia is solely that and they otherwise have no connection. We actually do not think they had ever met.'
