For thousands of years, women (and some men) have altered what nature has provided between their legs. Pubic modifications have largely escaped research scrutiny, but now one study shows which women are most likely to wield razors, and another explores the links between pubic presentation and women’s sexual attitudes and activities.
In ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Indian art, some female nudes sport trimmed or shaved pubic hair. In Renaissance Italian art, female nudes were often depicted bald between the legs, but the art of the same era in Northern Europe typically shows full bushes. We don’t know whether the Italian artists reproduced what they saw or indulged in artistic license.
Nor do we know if other factors influenced pubic presentation. It’s possible that women (and men) shaved to treat and prevent lice, an epidemic for centuries. It’s also possible that social position played a role, with courtesans being more likely than other women to be nude models and resort to manicuring.
Early photography, the 1840s, shows most but not all models with full hair. The same goes for early motion-picture pornography in the 1890s.
A 1968 survey of Australian nudists found that 40 percent of women did nothing to their pubic hair while half trimmed it somewhat, and 10 percent removed it.
Major men’s magazines in the U.S. ( Playboy , Penthouse ) did not show centerfolds below the hips until the 1970s. For the next 30 years, most had full hair or modest trims. But after 2000, the majority showed little or no pubic hair. But like 16th-century nudes, it’s unclear if these magazine models were typical of American women or reflected art directors’ aesthetics.
Brazilian waxing, commercial removal of some or all pubic hair, was introduced by a New York spa in 1987. Since then, the term has become a part of the lexicon, but it’s not clear how many women have had “Brazilians,” let alone how many have them regularly.
Meanwhile, my own informal survey of Internet chatter finds comments all over the map. Some say pubic appearance is a matter of personal preference while others call bald “the new normal,” dismissing natural presentation as “retro-bush.” Some say presence or absence of pubic hair has no impact on women’s sexuality , while others contend that shaved women are either more adventurous or the victims of overbearing men who insist that they shave.
In an Internet-based survey, Indiana University researchers asked 2,451 women age 18 to 68 how they present their pubic hair. The results:
Full (nothing removed)
18–24: 12 percent
25–29: 16 percent
30–39: 19 percent
40–49: 28 percent
50+: 52 percent
Trimmed with scissors
18–24: 29 percent
25–29: 39 percent
30–39: 50 percent
40–49: 50 percent
50+: 37 percent
Some removal (shaving, waxing, electrolysis)
18–24: 38 percent
25–29: 32 percent
30–39: 23 percent
40–49: 16 percent
50+: 9 percent
Bald (no hair at all)
18–24: 21 percent
25–29: 12 percent
30–39: 9 percent
40–49: 7 percent
50+: 2 percent
Pubic hair removal is clearly age-related. The younger the woman, the more likely she is to tinker with her presentation. Among those 18 to 24, only 12 percent remove nothing, while 21 percent remove everything. But among women over 50, more than half have full hair and only 2 percent go bald.
Relationship status and sexual orientation made little difference.
Razor shaving was by far the most popular removal method, with fewer than 5 percent of women engaging in waxing, electrolysis, or laser. Among those who shaved, most did so two to five times a month.
So, contrary to a great deal of Internet chatter, pubic hairlessness is not the new normal. American women present themselves in many different ways. The only clear trend is that the younger the woman, the more likely she is to trim, partly shave, or totally remove her hair.
Study #2: Does It Have Anything to Do With Sex?
In a follow-up study, the same researchers used the same data set to explore the links, if any, between pubic presentation and women’s sexuality.
They found that the former had little to do with the latter.
Compared with women who retained full hair, those who reported any hair removal were somewhat more interested in sex, and somewhat more likely to play in ways other than penis-vagina intercourse, i.e., vaginal fingering, cunnilingus, vaginal toy insertion, and vibrator use. But the differences were small.
There was no connection between pubic presentation and education , race- ethnicity , condom use, lubricant use, or anal play.
Finally, contrary to the assertions of some feminists that men pressure women to shave their pubic hair to make them look like porn stars, in this study, partner feelings had nothing to do with women’s pubic appearance. The women said they’d made their own decision, and that their choice expressed their own personal preferences.

Do you remember the first time you shaved your pubes ? When you were awkwardly bent over in the shower yelling at your parents to stop knocking on the door and asking why you've been in there for so long...oh, was that just me?
OK, even if you can't relate, everyone has a preference when it comes to how they maintain their pubic hair. Landing strip. Brazilian . Five o'clock shadow. Full bush. You name it. Whether you have a freshly trimmed flowerbed or lush, overgrown jungle, you're in charge of your own foliage.
Along with that autonomy comes a range of reasons for why people do or don't prefer to have hair down there. Maybe you like the skin around your hoo-ha to be silky smooth for sex. Or maybe you would rather skip the irritated skin and save time in the shower. Curious how common your down-below grooming habits are? Researchers from a university in Belgium actually decided to explore pubic hair trends and the reasons behind them .
They analyzed data from a survey of over 4,000 Belgian men and women over the age of 15. Participants were asked questions like whether they groomed their pubes, why they did or didn't (but not how, unfortunately), their relationship status and sexuality, and more.
Here's what they found: 80% of women said they had removed their pubic hair recently at the time of the survey. Perhaps unsurprisingly, that number was only 39% for the guys. Just 3% of women said they had never removed their pubic fuzz. Seriously, not even once. But many more men than women said they had a lifelong bush—21%, to be exact.
Women were also more likely to start mowing their lawn at a younger age, according to the survey. About 88% of ladies ages 15 to 20 reported grooming, while only about 28% of men in that age group did so. Women between 15 to 20 were the most likely to trim among women in general, while men between 40 and 50 were doing the most pubic grooming among guys.
Lesbian women reported grooming slightly more than hetero or bisexual women, and bisexual men were most likely to go hairless. Married dudes were most likely to trim, while women were most likely to do so if they were dating someone they didn't live with.
The researchers also looked at why people groom. Comfort during oral sex was at the top of the list, with 75% of women and 39% of men choosing this reason. About 67% of women said they do it because they feel more feminine, 63% said they like to feel soft, and 62% said their partner liked it. Women who didn't shave said they opt out because of the side effects, like itching and bumps, or because their partner prefers them not to.
Cleanliness was a close second for the men, with 39% of them saying they "think it is more hygienic." About 37% of men also said they "like to feel soft," and 36% said their partner wanted them to be clean shaven.
So there you have it, folks. Everyone is different below the belt, and pubic hair is no exception. However you whack your weeds, be proud of it.

Pre-trim your pubic hair. Razors are designed to shave fairly short hair and will quickly clog and become dull if applied to long hair. To trim it, gently pull the hair up, away from your body and then cut it back with small, sharp scissors, preferably clippers, along with some equipped with safety guards. Alternatively, use an electric scissor-action trimmer without rotating heads . Aim for hair that is shorter than 1/4" (0.6 cm).
If you are new to pubic shaving, you may want to leave your hair short for a couple of days, as this will allow you to get used to the feeling of being bare down there.
Trimming your hairs with scissors or small clippers is ok to do too, but some people become nervous when having such items near such a tender part of your body. If you aren't comfortable with using any of these, try electric razors . They are specifically designed to shave these kinds of hairs without getting too close to cut your skin.

Soften your hair and hair follicles by taking a hot shower or bath. This will make the coarse pubic hair a lot easier to shave off. It may seem like a non-necessary step, but it'll make the somewhat lengthy process much more manageable.
If you don't have time to take a hot shower or bath, simply run a washcloth under warm water and place it on your area and let it sit for about five minutes. [1]

It's important to exfoliate both before and after shaving because it will help all of the hairs get properly aligned outwards while stripping away the dead skin, allowing for a closer shave and reducing the chances of the razor catching and scratching you.

Foam up to avoid irritation. Use unscented shaving foam, cream, or gel to lather your pubic hair. It is recommended that you use shaving foam or cream that is designed for shaving pubic hair rather than facial hair.
Always test the shaving cream on another part of your body before you start applying it to your pubic hair, as some people suffer from allergic reactions to certain products.
Just because a product is marketed to females doesn't mean it's only usable by those of the fair sex. Shaving cream for women is generally gentler than men's. Moreover, men's shaving cream is often scented, which can lead to irritation and painful stinging. [2]
