Local Woman Completes Her 'Life List' After 20 Years of Adventure

Portland, OR — At age 25, Megan Carter scribbled down a wild, ambitious list of 50 things she wanted to do before she died. Dubbed her 'Life List,' it included everything from skydiving to writing a novel, learning French, and even swimming with sharks. Twenty years later, the now 45-year-old teacher has checked off every single item—and she says the journey changed her life in ways she never expected.

'I thought it was just a fun bucket list at first,' Carter admitted, flipping through her worn, coffee-stained notebook where she tracked her progress. 'But as I started ticking things off—like hiking the Inca Trail, volunteering at an animal shelter, and even baking a soufflé that didn’t collapse—I realized this wasn’t just about achievements. It was about pushing myself to live fully.'

Some goals took years of dedication. Carter spent three years saving for a trip to see the Northern Lights in Iceland and two more learning to play the piano well enough to perform at a local café. Others were spontaneous, like the time she impulsively signed up for a marathon with only six months to train. ('Never again,' she laughed.)

Her final challenge? Publishing her novel—a dream she’d put off for decades out of fear. Last month, she self-published The List, a fictional story inspired by her own adventures.

Friends and family gathered last weekend to celebrate her accomplishment with a potluck featuring dishes from her travels. 'Megan’s always been determined, but watching her chase these dreams—big and small—has been inspiring,' said her longtime friend, Rachel Wu. 'Now half of us are making our own Life Lists!'

Carter’s advice for others? Start small, stay flexible, and enjoy the detours. 'The list wasn’t about perfection,' she said. 'It was about discovering who I could become along the way.'

As for what’s next? She grinned. 'Maybe a Life List 2.0.'
