HOLLIDAYSBURG — An Altoona woman who engaged in the creation of child pornography through photography and sexual activities, apologized Friday in Blair County court where she was sentenced to 9.5 to 25 years’ incarceration.
“I’m sorry for my actions,” Kara Tornatore, 31, told Judge Daniel J. Milliron, who later told Tornatore that her apology rang hollow.
“You provided the opportunity for Mr. (Stephen) Apostolu to prey on these children,” Milliron said. “The court does not accept your apology.”
Milliron sentenced Apostolu in December to his recommended sentence of 12 to 25 years’ incarceration, followed by five years’ probation. His charges included aggravated indecent assault of a child, indecent assault and numerous counts of manufacturing child pornography, possession of child pornography and trafficking of minors.
In court Friday, Milliron imposed Tornatore’s recommended sentence to 9.5 to 25 years’ incarceration, followed by five years’ probation. Her offenses included criminal conspiracy, production of child pornography, statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors. The sentence also addressed an unrelated contraband charge Tornatore incurred in November 2019 for making jailhouse alcohol.
District Attorney Pete Weeks told Milliron that his office contacted the victims and their parents or guardians with only one mother and daughter electing to attend Tornatore’s sentencing.
“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” the mother told Milliron.
The mother acknowledged that she and Tornatore had been friends and that she remains sorry for not having protected her daughter.
“The length of time you spend in jail … at least nobody else will be harmed,” the mother said.
Altoona police arrested Tornatore and Apostolu in mid-2018 after an investigation revealed that the couple had been photographing and videotaping local girls, between 9 and 17 years old, inside a Logan Hills apartment in 2017 and early 2018.
Charges indicate that Apostolu allegedly admitted to being addicted to child pornography. Tornatore, according to the charges, talked the girls into posing naked or in one case, into donning lingerie with fur trim for a Christmas-style photo.
Police also reported, in support of criminal charges, that their evidence included photos of Tornatore with the young girls in sexual poses.
“I know my actions will leave a lifetime of scars on multiple people, including myself,” Tornatore said as she spoke in court. Her actions, she said, reflected her addiction to methamphetamine and a co-dependent relationship with Apostolu.
Defense attorney Michael B. Cohen pointed out that Tornatore has been in Blair County Prison since July 4, 2018.
“She’s well on her way to rehabilitation,” Cohen said. “Her case is an example of how drugs and an abusive relationship create a nightmare for many people.”
Tornatore’s mother, Sharon Tornatore, also blamed her daughter’s methamphetamine use when speaking outside the courtroom, after the sentencing hearing was over.
“If my daughter was not using drugs, none of this would have happened,” Sharon Tornatore said.
Milliron also recognized Tornatore as a Tier III sex offender, based on her offenses. Because of that designation, Tornatore must quarterly register her address and related information with state police for the rest of her life, Weeks told the mother and daughter.
Milliron also told Tornatore that she should be transported to the state prison system as soon as possible.
