A Wollongong bricklayer who turned to drugs after a horror workplace injury left him with severe arthritis was busted selling tens of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine in an undercover police sting, a court has heard. Login or signup to continue reading. Police will allege they secretly monitored Brent Rabbitte as he sold large quantities of cocaine from homes in Dapto, Wollongong and Towradgi in multiple separate transactions between November last year and April this year. Rabbitte, a former Dapto High School student and once-promising junior rugby league player who represented NSW in high school, allegedly collected tens of thousand of dollars in payments from the illegal trade, allowing him to live a 'life of luxury, well beyond his means'. The court heard detectives used 'covert evidence gathering techniques' to secretly monitor and record Rabbitte as he supplied party drugs throughout the region. It will be alleged one of Rabbitte's regular customers was an undercover police informant, who made regular purchases of cocaine and MDMA. The bags were subsequently seized by police, weighed and tested. The substance was found to be cocaine, weighing in at It is alleged two more trades took place at the Dapto home on November 27 and December 5. Both allegedly involved similar quantities of cocaine to the first exchange, but also included amounts of MDMA. Rabbitte allegedly made further sales to the same informant twice in April, once at his home address on Gipps Street and the second outside a house in Towradgi. Officers swooped on Rabbitte on Wednesday evening as he sat in the Mercedes inside the garage of his apartment complex. Police said they took hold of Rabbitte but as they tried to remove him from the car, he allegedly threw his mobile phone down a deep stormwater drain pit next to the vehicle. The phone became submerged in about 30cm of water but detectives were able to be retrieved it. Meanwhile, police raided Rabbitte's unit, allegedly discovering two rifle bullets, 2. Rabbitte was charged with eight counts of individual drug supply and one count of ongoing drug supply, as well as knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime and possessing ammunition. He was remanded in custody overnight and faced court on Thursday where he sought release on bail. Defence barrister Steven Boland told the court his client had been a 'very productive member of society' who had worked as a refractory bricklayer throughout Australia and overseas before suffering a workplace accident three years ago. He said Rabbitte's serious injuries had prevented his return to work and he was now on a disability support pension for 'severe arthritis and cellulitis', which at its worst prevented him from being able to put his own shoes on. He said Rabbitte had developed depression and turned to drugs, leaving him with 'quite significant addiction issues'. Today's top stories curated by our news team. Also includes evening update. By Matt Gazy. ABC Illawarra. Topic: Drug Offences. Morgan Swift, 25, supplied A man who played a major role in a Wollongong cocaine syndicate and sold drugs to support his addiction has been given a three-year jail sentence. Morgan Swift, 25, worked as a 'willing apprentice' for father-and-son co-offenders, Robert and Daniel Bojlevski, who were leaders of a drug ring, Wollongong District Court heard today. Swift acted as a 'courier', supplying Police arrested Swift after a 'sophisticated' investigation, where mobile calls and messages were intercepted, the court heard. Swift was sentenced in Wollongong Courthouse today. Swift has been in custody since his arrested in September Swift became addicted to drugs as a way of 'self-medicating' from past trauma, the court heard. Swift supplied a letter to the court, in which he said jail time had acted as a wake-up call, and he felt 'motivated to change'. Judge Haesler noted Swift's support, provided by three women present in court. Defence lawyer Scott Fraser said Swift's two years in custody since his arrest were already 'substantial', and his prospects for rehabilitation were good. Swift was incarcerated at a time when COVID was rampant across NSW, limiting visitors and forcing offenders into cell isolation for days at a time, the court heard. The court heard Daniel Bojlevski — who Judge Haesler described as 'the boss' of the drug ring — ran the 'sophisticated operation'. He said Swift had 'ambitions' to earn more, having developed his own 'customer base'. Although Swift was considered 'at the bottom' of the operation, Judge Haesler noted the severe effect drugs had on the community. The court heard Swift was 'at the direction of Bojlevski', arranging drug meets from safe houses, hiring cars, handling cash, dealing with profits and adding additives to the cocaine. In handing down the sentence, Judge Haesler noted the 'noble' letter Swift had written in jail. Judge Haesler said Swift had a good chance of rehabilitation if he received treatment and support in the community. Swift will be eligible for release on parole on December 5, with his three-year prison sentence backdated to his arrest on September 6, We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work.
