A four-part adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1864 coming-of-age novel about the life and loves of a strong-minded woman in an 1820s English town. Although the book was unfinished at the time of the author's death, the final scenes were added by screenwriter Andrew Davies, who, with producer Sue Birtwistle, was also responsible for the acclaimed 1996 TV-version of Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice.' The miniseries later aired on 'Masterpiece Theatre' in April 2001.

In Part 1 of a four-part adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, 17-year-old Molly Gibson (Justine Waddell) is unhappy that her father has remarried, but pleased that she now has a beautiful and worldly stepsister, Cynthia (Keeley Hawes). In Part 2, Molly (Justine Waddell) learns more about her new stepsister, Cynthia, who has arrived from France, and they soon appear to be rivals for the affections of the squire's son. Cynthia: Keeley Hawes. Mrs. Gibson: Francesca Annis. Osborne: Tom Hollander. Roger: Anthony Howell.

In Part 3, Cynthia (Keeley Hawes) goes to London, where she turns heads and attracts many men. Meanwhile, Roger arrives in Africa, and Molly learns that her stepsister has a dangerous secret, which could put them both at risk. Roger: Anthony Howell. Molly: Justine Waddell. Mrs. Gibson: Francesca Annis. Mr. Gibson: Bill Paterson.

As the story concludes, Molly's reputation is damaged because of her involvement in the secret known by Cynthia (Keeley Hawes), who faces even greater complications when she receives shocking news from Hamley Hall. Over the Hills and Far Away Traditional
My wife was surprised that I sat out this whole miniseries with her. In fact, that was not hard at all. I loved the story, the performances, the wit and detail, the intelligence behind the dialogues and the storyline. Even though I could see the 'happy ending' looming large over the second half of the story, there remains a LOT to enjoy. The performances are so good (maybe with the exception of the two young brothers) that I can hardly believe the actors in fact have other characters than those they enacted on screen. 'Sense and sensibility' may be another fine Victorian adaptation, but I take this 'Wives and daughters' over it any time. Wholeheartedly recommended to anyone whose heart is not made of stone or cast iron.

Wives and Daughters is a 1999 four part BBC serial adapted from the novel Wives and Daughters: An Everyday Story by Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell. It focuses on Molly Gibson (Justine Waddell), the daughter of the town doctor, and the changes that occur in her life after her widowed father chooses to remarry.
