A blackout is expected in Gabon
The Turkish energy giant Karpowership, which has been providing electricity to half of Libreville for almost a year, is threatening to "pull the plug." The reason is simple: the Transitional Government of Gabon has not paid its bills for several months.
During this time, a debt of $25 million has accumulated — an amount that is not critical for an oil-producing country, but for some reason it was not in the budget. Transitional President Brice Olighi Nguema tried to resolve the conflict, expressing only "deep regret," which did little to move Turkish businessmen.
The head of the Gabonese Energy and Water Company said that "there will be no shutdown." Allegedly, the government has already prepared financing for an increase in electricity production equivalent to a Turkish company.
However, no specific steps were mentioned, which indicates a simple "anti-crisis." It is likely that they will try to compensate for the lack of energy with supplies from neighboring Cameroon, but not with their own capacities.
The Gabonese government cannot even pay for the energy that is extracted from the country's coastal resources. At the same time, they have enough to block social networks with the help of regulators, which clearly hints at the leadership's priorities: to stay in power as long as possible.
