Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.
To be honest… I liked Triss. I went after Yennefer in my first playthrough, and even though their story is well done, I really, really, REALLY don’t like romances done this way. Destined to be together, magically bound to love each other… I don’t like it because the main character doesn’t really decide what they feel. Instead, it’s decided for them. I can’t say more without spoiling the game, but by the time I did Yennefer’s romance quest, I just couldn’t see these two people together and being happy without some writing device keeping them together.

That’s actually why I liked that you could choose who to love in this game. I haven’t read the books but I did see online that Geralt is pretty much stuck with Yennefer, which is why CD Projekt Red’s decision to let the player choose is so bold!
So for me, it actually was pretty easy. Neither woman is a saint and each has a lot of red in her ledger. However, Triss seemed kinder, gentler, and more prone to asking forgiveness than Yennefer.
And maybe let me put it a different way: Yennefer felt like the girl you’re attracted to in High School… she pretty, everyone else seems to want her, and you feel kinda lucky just to have her. But in college, you meet more wonderful women, you grow up a bit, and when you look back, you see that she was awfully manipulative and not very nice. Meanwhile, Triss felt like that woman you fall in love with right after college. She pretty much knows what she wants, she’s able to hang out, have fun, speak her mind, but isn’t arrogant about it. She knows she’s beautiful, but she just likes to hear you say it.
Oh, boy, the big issue. Ok, let’s get to it… *rolls up sleeves*
My first exposure to the world of the Witcher was the second game. I hadn't read the books (now partially remedied) and hasn’t played the first game, (still haven’t) so found myself in a similar position to some others who have answered this question. I didn’t know who Triss was, apart from she’s clearly with Gerald, and seems nice. I didn’t know who Yennefer was, apart from Gerald used to know her and wants to find her again. That’s about all I had to go on. I don’t even know what Yennefer looks like.

As the second game progressed, I found out that the relationship between Gerald and Yennefer was “toxic,” and that none of his friends seemed to like her. So perhaps she isn’t a nice person after all. Signs aren’t promising.
I learn that she dresses in black and white.
I learn that she has black hair. Black as a raven’s wing.
I learn that she smells of lilac and gooseberries.
Suddenly, I start to feel like I know her, just a little.
Then I meet her. After all this buildup, she’s right there in front of Geralt, and you finally see her in the flesh. She’s standoffish, bossy, a little rude. But after the scene ends, I realise I want to see her again.
I understood why Geralt’s friends don’t care for her much. I completely got that she could make people dislike her.
I also understood what Geralt saw in her.
As the game progresses, Geralt is able to break the ice (if you play your cards right) that’s formed since they last saw each other. Suddenly I can see more than the prickly exterior that she throws up to defend herself. I can see the woman beneath it all, the one that Geralt found so enchanting that he was willing to bind their fates together forever.
I chose the dialogue options that were the closest to what I would have said in real life. On Hindarsfjall, my Geralt chose to lighten the mood by making dog puns while searching for a werewolf. When Yennefer joined in, I realised what I was watching, and I realised why I had wanted to see her again.
Their relationship reminds me of something.
The song A Wolven Storm was one of the greatest moments I have ever seen in a video game. It sums up, deeply and sweetly, the relationship between the two.
Geralt will always long for Yennefer, no matter the circumstance.
She may disappear from his life, perhaps for long periods of time.
But when a storm comes, she will be right behind him as he runs into it.
They belong together, because they have twisted fate to make it just so, and damn what the stars own.
When it came to The Last Wish, I was fully invested in Geralt and Yen. When Geralt has the opportunity to tell her that his feelings hadn’t changed, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I have played through the game many times, and I have never taken the other option, and I never will. I once found the other option on Youtube just to see how it played out, and I couldn’t finish the video. The pain in Yennefer’s voice was heartbreaking.
As the game progressed further, and I began to see how Yen interacts with Ciri, I knew I’d made the right choice. Geralt and Yen are her parents, in every way that matters. Seeing that family together made the game for me.
When I played the last expansion, Blood and Wine, I got the Yen ending, and it moved me to tears. The knowledge that Geralt and Yen had found a Happy Ever After was the best finale I could have ever hoped for, and was the most emotionally fulfilling ending I have ever found in a game.
You see, the person that Yen reminds me of is my wife.
The relationship that they have reminds me of my own.
I am fortunate to be married to a wonderful, complex, enchantress of a woman. She is a challenge to me on every level, from the intellectual to the emotional, and everything in between, and solving the riddle of her being has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. We’ve been with each other through hell and back, and I have watched her bend under the weight of trials until they broke her. Then I have watched her pick herself up and just carry on. I have helped, in my own small way, but the strength of character she has shown has been inspirational to me. It is in no way an overstatement to say that she is my heroine.
That is what I believe Geralt sees when he looks at Yennefer. A companion who will challenge him on every level, push him out of his comfort zone, and make him grow as a man. He knows what horrors she’s been through, and loves her all the more for having had the strength to not only come through them, but to flourish as she did so.
Since I last played the game, my wife has given me a beautiful son. Now I understand even more deeply the bond that Geralt and Yen share.
The bond of those who have undertaken one of life’s great adventures: parenthood.
I have been fortunate enough to find a woman I can call my true love.
Who am I to deny Geralt the same opportunity?

The pros and cons of choosing to romance Yennefer of Vengerberg instead of Triss Merigold in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and how it affects gameplay.
Monster slaying and collecting crowns aside, one of Geralt’s central conflicts in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is his love life, and the choice between settling down with one of two sorceresses: Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg. The latter is technically the canon choice given her role in the wider fiction, but choosing Yennefer will come with its own set of pros and cons that players may want to consider before making a decision.
Yennefer and Geralt have a complicated relationship that has spanned the course of nearly twenty years, and choosing to pursue a relationship with her is an impactful in-game decision for The Witcher 3 . They initially met because of an altercation with a djinn (or genie), which Geralt inadvertently used to bind himself together with Yennefer. This became a constant point of contention between the two, as neither was sure whether their feelings for one another were real or simply a byproduct of the wish Geralt made.
One of the best things about choosing Yennefer over Triss in The Witcher 3 could also perhaps be one of the worst: Her and Geralt’s complicated past. This makes Yennefer an integral part of the story and gives her more substantial in-game interaction and romance content. Triss and Geralt’s relationship is a touch more behind-the-scenes than his and Yennefer’s, which has a copious amount of in-game dialogue and related side-quests. She is also a big part of Ciri’s life and is something of a stand-in mother figure. All of this time spent together creates a deep and genuine bond between the two that makes them feel like a more fleshed-out and complete relationship than Geralt and Triss, despite Triss' more considerable screen time in the previous games.
Ultimately, there aren't major changes based on this particular romantic choice, but it does mean that the sometimes fraught relationship between Geralt and Yennefer in The Witcher 3 will continue, troubled and sometimes toxic as it is. Bother are strong-willed and independent people, leading them to be less than understanding of each other at times. This can lead to some abrasive interactions between the two, and frequent fights. Although Geralt and Yennefer end up breaking the djinn’s spell and finding their true feelings for one another, it never quite feels like that alone will fix their ideological differences. Their moral codes don't often line up, leading them to separate for years at a time before once again finding one another. It also means that Triss, who players may have had more experience with from the first two games (especially if they've transferred a save file), will be heartbroken as a result. If players complete the Blood and Wine expansion, Yennefer will be the one to end up with Geralt at his new property - unless players tried to romance both Triss and Yennefer, which will lead to Ciri or Dandelion showing up instead.
But there is no expressly correct choice for romance in The Witcher 3 . Both Yennefer and Triss are interesting and complex characters on their own, and players are free to ignore romance options altogether. Though they will miss out on some in-game lore and dialogue, the story can still be completed sans-relationship. Both Yennefer and Geralt remain equally as interesting whether together or apart, so there really is no wrong decision.
