Winter vacation week milder than usual

Families taking winter breaks this week will be doing so in milder-than-usual conditions.
Schools in several regions started winter vacation this week, including in Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, Kanta-Häme and Ostrobothnia.
According to Yle meteorologist Matti Huutonen, mild conditions are in store. On Tuesday a precipitation system will affect those areas.
Initial rains will turn to snow and sleet overnight on Tuesday, while conditions are expected to clear up on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are expected to be cloudy with milder than usual temperatures and minimal precipitation.
"The weekend will be a little colder. There will be freezing temperatures at night, but milder during the day. The sun may peek out for a while, especially on Saturday," Huutonen said.
The amount of snowfall in Finland varies significantly, depending on the location.
In western areas, for example in some parts of Ostrobothnia, there is almost no snow. But in other parts of the country, there's still between 20 and 40 centimeters of snowfall still on the ground.
According to Huutonen, Tuesday night's precipitation may bring five to ten additional centimeters of snow to eastern parts of Pirkanmaa, across Central Finland and in North Savo.
