Widowmaker is a Damage hero in Overwatch .

Widowmaker equips herself with whatever it takes to eliminate her targets, including mines that dispense poisonous gas, a visor that grants her squad infra-sight, and a powerful sniper rifle that can fire in fully-automatic mode.

Widowmaker is the archetypical sniper of Overwatch. Equipped with a powerful scoped rifle, she is capable of taking down the majority of the game's heroes with a single fully-charged headshot, and is still able to deal serious damage with bodyshots. Her Infra-Sight and Venom Mine give her and her team considerable information on enemy movements, allowing them to easily counter ambushes and coordinated pushes.

Widowmaker is, however, relatively weak in close-range combat, and her immobility while scoped makes her an easy target; Widowmaker's biggest threat is often another, better Widowmaker on the enemy team. She's often forced to play away from the objective where she's safer, as her only real mobility is Grappling Hook which can have a long cast time and leaves Widowmaker fairly defenseless to another attack.

Widowmaker is the perfect assassin: a patient, ruthlessly efficient killer who shows neither emotion nor remorse. [2] She is unaffected by low temperatures. [3]

Amélie Guillard grew up in her family's ancestral home of Chateau Guillard . [4] For much of her life, she was known as an accomplished ballet dancer in Paris . [5] She married Gérard Lacroix , an Overwatch agent spearheading operations against the Talon terrorist organization. After several unsuccessful attempts to eliminate Gérard, Talon decided to change its focus to his wife. Talon operatives kidnapped her and subjected her to an intense program of neural reconditioning. They broke her will, suppressed her personality, and reprogrammed her as a sleeper agent. She was eventually found by Overwatch agents, apparently none the worse for wear, and returned to her normal life.

Two weeks later she killed Gérard in his sleep.

Her mission complete, Amélie returned to Talon, and they completed the process of turning her into a living weapon. She was given extensive training in the covert arts, and then her physiology was altered, drastically slowing her heart, which turned her skin cold and blue and numbed her ability to experience human emotion. [2] The slowing of her heart rate allowed her to become an exceptional sniper. [6] Thanks to Talon's experiments Amélie was gone, replaced by "Widowmaker," Talon's most effective assassin, and feeling little save the satisfaction of a job well done. [7] As far as Overwatch knew, she had been kidnapped. [8]

Widowmaker was present in an anti-Talon operation conducted by Overwatch, as a force led by Jack Morrison rescued a number of scientists that Talon had taken hostage. While Overwatch was successful in this regard, Widowmaker was able to take out a number of agents. The operation led to a sniper duel between her and Agent Amari, as they made their way throughout the urban terrain. Ana was able to temporarily incapacitate Widowmaker, hitting her in her helmet. But upon seeing Widowmaker's face, she froze, recognizing Amélie. It was all the time Widowmaker needed to take her own shot, shooting Ana through the scope of her rifle and into her cybernetic eye. [8]

Widowmaker was sent to King's Row to assassinate Tekhartha Mondatta , the Shambali leader, as he made a speech. As she made her way to her vantage point, she reflected upon how she had been frightened of spiders as a child, drawing an implicit comparison to Widowmaker herself -- neither one felt emotion or had a beating heart. She lowered herself, upside-down, off the side of a building using her grappling hook and began to line up her shot. However, unbeknownst to her, Tracer was also at the speech. Just before she could press the trigger, she was distracted by Tracer blinking through the air towards her, pistols firing. The two engaged in a rooftop chase as Mondatta was ushered away, having been warned by Tracer. In the end, Tracer's pulsebomb backfired and blew both of them into the air. As she fell, Widowmaker took careful aim, and fired a single bullet at the center of Tracer's chronal accelerator . Tracer blinked forward, and the bullet sped on—straight into Mondatta, killing him moments before he entered his limousine. Tracer tackled her to the rooftop, demanding to know why she would do such a thing, but as a Talon aircraft arrived to retrieve her, Widowmaker just chuckled, whispered, "Adieu, chérie," ("Farewell, darling,") and flipping the pair over the edge of the roof, slammed Tracer into the building's wall below them. Leaving incapacitated Tracer behind, as Widowmaker was spirited away from London she reflected that spiders did indeed feel—when they kill. [9]

She later reflected that her assassination of Mondatta was one of her finest kills. [3]

Widowmaker teamed up with Reaper as part of an attempt to recover Doomfist 's gauntlet. She was hindered in this by Winston and Tracer however. The mission was further complicated by a child stealing the gauntlet, and using it against her. After Tracer disarmed her, she made an escape with Reaper using her grapple, though both agents engaged in pursuit. [10]

Alongside Reaper and Sombra , Widowmaker was assigned to assassinate Katya Volskaya , the CEO of Volskaya Industries . Sombra was able to take down the facility's security system, allowing Widowmaker and Reaper access to the site. Widowmaker lined up her sights from a vantage point, and waited for Katya to enter her field of fire. She almost did, but an alarm sounded, sending the base into high alert and Katya to her fortified office. Widowmaker tried to salvage the shot anyway but narrowly missed the CEO, instead shattering the lower half of her hanging right earring. Reaper ordered her to stay put while he took her out, but he was waylaid by a mech . Sombra engaged in pursuit, but reported that Katya had escaped. Reaper ordered that the operatives return to their ship. [11]

During Christmas, Widowmaker took a visit to Gérard's resting place. She left a rose on her husband's grave. [12]

After Doomfist was freed from his prison by Reaper, he rendezvoused with Widowmaker at a casino in Monaco. He complimented her for her assassination of Mondatta. Sombra, who was on the same channel, told Doomfist to ask her about her failure to assassinate Volskaya, but Doomfist shut down the conversation. Doomfist met with Maximilien at a game table; Widowmaker partook in the game while they discussed matters pertaining to Talon. She won quite a few chips, but the game was interrupted by Talon agents sent by Vialli to assassinate Doomfist. The pair fought them off and departed, headed for Venice . There, Widowmaker, Reaper, and Sombra eliminated Talon agents loyal to Vialli, while Doomfist killed Vialli himself. [13]

Widowmaker returned to her ancestral home at some point. [4]

Widowmaker's design originated from a playable class in the cancelled Titan . In the original pitch for Prometheus , the class was named Longshot and wielded a sniper rifle and machine pistol, and had the Grappling Hook and Recon Visor abilities. Longshot would appear in a later pitch for the game with a new design more closely resembling Widowmaker, and was also featured prominently in the Prometheus "hero lineup" key art. [19]
The first concept for Widowmaker was to create a ranged sniper character. [20] She was one of the easiest characters to animate in the game, [21] and was one of the first three characters designed for Overwatch , alongside Tracer and Reaper. [22] Her venom mine ability originally created a much larger and deadlier explosion. [23]

For more information, see Patch Notes

Developer Comment: Widowmaker has become stronger over time following changes to other heroes, such as power reductions to barriers. This change is intended to slow down her shots, reducing her overall DPS.

When I was a girl, I had a fear of spiders. I was told they felt no emotion, that their hearts never beat. But I know the truth. At the moment of the kill, they are never more alive.

I was impressed by your performance in London. Talon could use more operatives like you. Especially given recent lapses.

Widowmaker is a playable character appearing in the 2016 video game Overwatch , developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment . The character is of French origin; her real name is Amélie Lacroix ( née Guillard). [3]
Widowmaker was first introduced at BlizzCon 2014, where her character was first noted to be a sniper and lightly armored assassin. [4] She is based on one of the classes for Crossroads , an idea tossed around by the former Titan team before they settled on working on Overwatch . [5]
Widowmaker was noted to be equipped with a grappling hook and the ability to see through walls. [4] In November 2015, a patch was implemented to tone down Widowmaker's ultimate ability—"Infra-Sight"—as Blizzard continued its goal to keep the characters on Overwatch' s roster balanced. [6] The patch made it so that the player would not be able to have Widowmaker's ultimate charge up while Infra-Sight was active. [6]
Her character is voiced by Chloé Hollings in the game's English and French versions. [1] Some of her dialogue in the game's English version is spoken in French. [7] Widowmaker is noted to have blue skin due to covert training in which her physiology altered to slow her heart, effectively turning her skin the color seen in-game. A "Noire" skin for the character was included on pre-ordered versions of the game. [8]
Widowmaker's role in Overwatch is on defense. [9] Her defensive nature is reflected in her sniper classification, allowing her to be well utilized from a distance; [10] VG247 called her a "classic sniper." [9] Widowmaker comes equipped with the "Widow's Kiss": a rifle with two modes. [9] Firing without aiming causes the rifle to function as close-to-medium assault rifle which is stronger than her scope. Aiming through her scope triggers the weapon to function as a long-range sniper rifle, that can eliminate many other characters with a critical hit. [11] She also comes equipped with her Grappling Hook ability, allowing her to readjust her position and reach heights that other characters cannot. [9] [12] In addition, her "Venom Mine" is a small explosive that sticks to a surface and releases toxic gas when enemies wander into its area. While the poison is active, Widowmaker can see the affected enemy through obstacles, similar to her ultimate. Finally, her ultimate ability, Infra-Sight, allows Widowmaker and her teammates to see through obstacles to locate enemies. [9] Her ultimate ability is able to be used to counter enemy flankers. [12]
Widowmaker's fictional biography details her real name: Amélie Lacroix (born Amélie Guillard), age: 33, and base of operations: Annecy , France . [13] In Overwatch lore, her former life included her marriage to Gérard Lacroix, an Overwatch agent leading operations against Talon, a terrorist organization, and her former occupation as a ballerina . Talon opted to kidnap Amélie after several failed attempts to kill Gérard. After kidnapping Amélie, Talon subjected her to an intensive neural reconditioning program, breaking her will and reprogramming her as a sleeper agent for Talon. Sometime after this, she was found by Overwatch agents, seemingly unaffected by Talon's methods. Two weeks after returning to her normal life, she killed Gérard in his sleep, and returned to Talon, where she was fully converted into one of their agents. The extensive training she underwent caused her physiology to change, dramatically slowing her heart, lowering the temperature of her skin, and turning her skin a blue color. [13] Now, her character is noted to be numb to human emotion. [13]
Widowmaker appears in Alive , the second in an eight-part series of Overwatch animated shorts . [14] The short is set in London's King's Row, which also the setting for a map in the game. [15] Widowmaker's in-game abilities are also featured in the short. [16] In the short, Widowmaker is featured on a rooftop plotting to assassinate Tekhartha Mondatta, the head of the Shambali, an in-universe group of omnics formed to bring peace between omnics and humans. She is confronted by former Overwatch agent Tracer , who engages in a rooftop battle with her; however, Tracer is unsuccessful in her attempts to foil Widowmaker. In addition to successfully assassinating Mondatta, Widowmaker also damages Tracer's chronal accelerator, which allows Tracer to maintain her physical form in the present time. [14] [15]
In Heroes of the Storm , there is a Widowmaker skin for the playable character Nova , and vice versa – in Overwatch, there is a Nova skin for the playable character Widowmaker. [17] [18]
The character has received positive critical reception; she was labeled a "classic sniper character" and "great defensive hero" by VG247 in their Overwatch hero guide, noting that she "works best in wide-open maps with long corridors". [9] Matt Whittaker of Hardcore Gamer wrote that "the traditional sniper hero of the bunch, Widowmaker is a particularly lethal character for those with solid keyboard and mouse skill, or those who are particularly great at sniping with a controller," but did not recommend her for players whom don't have a precise aim. [12] This sentiment was echoed by Kevin Thielenhaus of Gameranx , who noted that "[Widowmaker] requires skill, but even if you're new to online competitive FPS, she's powerful enough to help any team." [19] Additionally she was the most selected defensive-class character during Overwatch ' s beta period. [20]
Dean James of Attack of the Fanboy found Widowmaker to be one of the strongest characters in the game, [21] Widowmaker has also been noted to be one of the most popular Overwatch characters; she was the most selected defense-class hero in the game during its open beta. [22] Matt Kim of Inverse labelled Widowmaker as a "fan favorite" character. [23] Her popularity with fans has led to Ben Bertoli of Kotaku calling her one of the most overused heroes. [24] In a "Clueless Gamer" segment of Conan featuring Game of Thrones actors Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey , Overwatch was played, with Dinklage, Headey, and host Conan O'Brien all choosing Widowmaker. [25] Her prevalence was also noted by Paul Tamburro of CraveOnline , whom complained that "In Overwatch you are sometimes greeted by more than one of these players per match, all assuming the role of Widowmaker, all standing on some ledge in the distance and all doing absolutely nothing to help you and your teammates push towards victory" in a list of the "10 Overwatch Problems That All Players Will Face." [26]
Paste magazine's Suriel Vazquez ranked Widowmaker 6th out of Overwatch ' s 21 characters on her "How Many Times They Made Me Yell 'Bullshit!'" list, expressing that "dealing with her is more frustrating than it should be." [27] Will Greenwald of PC Magazine noted that Widowmaker was one of his five favorite characters to play with, writing "Bastion and Widowmaker gave me the ability to cover choke points at both short/medium and long range." [28]
Overwatch characters have also become frequent subjects to cosplay as, with a Widowmaker cosplay by Russian cosplayer Jannet "Incosplay" Vinogradova receiving praise from Hayley Williams of Kotaku , whom wrote that "This Russian cosplayer is taking the world by storm, with a cosplay of Widowmaker [...] that looks like it could have been ripped out of the game itself." [29] Chris Jager of Lifehacker Australia similarly called her effort "the perfect Widowmaker cosplay" and "probably the best." [30] Overwatch ' s release saw large amounts of fan-made pornography featuring its characters being produced; "Overwatch" related searches boosted by 817% on Pornhub after the game's open beta went live, with "the most popular characters [featured being] Tracer and Widowmaker." [31] Tech Times remarked that "Widowmaker, by far, is the most traditionally sexy character in Overwatch . She's slim, tall, fit and wears high heels. Her outfit reveals more than a little skin to boot." [25] However, Philippa Warr of Rock Paper Shotgun opined, "I don't really get why Widowmaker has been given the femme fatale styling. Like, that whole femme fatale thing is about being all alluring and sexy, attracting people and then killing them, right? And yet she's the snipiest sniper in the game. She stands the furthest away from people of the entire cast and shoots them in the head, sometimes without them even seeing her. Who could she possibly be alluring?" [32]
