I've never been told that I talked in my sleep - not until now. I am in my mid-fifties, and a few years ago my wife noticed that I was starting to talk in my sleep. This was not too concerning and did not happen that often. My sleep talking was a novelty to laugh about the next day.

Welcome! This site is continuously being created by students of

Dr. William C. Dement's

Sleep And Dreams course at Stanford University.
We made this site as a call to action for people all over the world to live healthier, happier, safer, and more productive lives by learning about their own sleep. We have faith that reading the information provided on this site will motivate you to be smart about your sleep deprivation and strategic about your alertness in order to live life to your fullest, most energetic potential .
In fact, we challenge you to do so! What do you say, are you up for the challenge?
Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3) that isn't talked about enough. It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.
If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
Dr. Dement's pioneering textbook has been the core text for

Sleep and Dreams

since 1980, but it has just recently been made available to the wider public for the first time.
In it you'll find a more detailed account of the most important things you need to know about sleep, alertness, dreams, and sleep disorders. Studies, statistics, plus plenty of Dr. Dement's classic anecdotes painting the history of sleep medicine.

I keep hitting my boyfriend in my sleep and it's starting to really effect us. We have a big bed, we both have body pillows, he even tucks the blanket under him to keep us separated. What else can we do?
My partner is nasty to me at night, if I talk to him about it the next day he says he can't help what he does when he's asleep. Is there anything I can do?
My boyfriend often wakes up (actually always) in a dark and mean mood. Sometimes when tired, he yells loudly and sounds like a psycho. Is he mentally ill?
What should I do after hitting my wife in my sleep?
Why would my boyfriend push me away and roll over angry while sleeping? He wakes up and feels bad. He has no idea he is doing it or why.
What do I do about a girlfriend who punches me in her sleep?
How do I stop punching in my sleep?
What part of the head should I hit my husband while he is asleep so he is less angry all the time?

Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.
Perhaps you should construct a pillow fort between yourselves. Get a few long body pillows and pile them up in the middle of the bed. Alternatively, you could switch the 'head' of the bed so that you sleep the opposite direction of your wife, and you'd only punch her in the leg by accident, instead of upper body.
Been there, done that, left a bruise (and feel horrible). I have a long history of odd nighttime behavior including but not limited to: sleeping with my eyes open; having entire coherent conversations while asleep; mumbling under my breath; Accused of other things most people would be embarrassed of doing in their sleep (w/e I was asleep I wasn't conscious); sitting up and swinging (once cracked a wall)once caught by my other half's hand leaving a bruise.
Most of the violent tendencies came from overheating, or some sort of constraint. The most violent came when my doctor prescribed a cpap mac

Most of the violent tendencies came from overheating, or some sort of constraint. The most violent came when my doctor prescribed a cpap machine. This headpiece made me overheat and cause horrible nightmares. Fortunately for you I suggest learning lucid dreaming, as you remember your dreams you are a prime candidate. This is how I learned to control my issues to the point where IF i swing it is gentle and no more than a gentle nudge.
I have had nightmares since childhood, often based on fire, flying/falling and or fighting. Mine were always caused by environmental conditions that caused me to overheat. Since then I keep my bedroom at or below 60 degrees year round so my body can control its own temperatures and my triggers will not go off as often.
Before i was in control of my environment I had to learn when i was dreaming. Often the only way i could tell was to train myself both in life and in dreams to think how i would like the situation to resolve (often in the falling dreams this included me being able to fly) and if i was dreaming that want and visualizing the solution actually would cause it to happen. Often making me into some awesome super hero. If you are one to have adult dreams you could see where you could have fun with that.
Often I could wake up from a dream and choose to go back into it or not when i fell back asleep, other times falling back into the dream i still had the memory and that would be my trigger i was dreaming again. My main recurring nightmare was in high school and that was that the house was on fire (of course brought on by me overheating) more often than not i would wake up than fall back into the dream up to 5 times a night.
The day i learned about how to control the dream (lucid dreaming) the dream changed. I could out of the burning house and ddrove for help. A little bit down the road the earth open up and fire and lava came out, my thought was, and I remember it clearly "this cant be happening; I will not take this anymore.' With that thought i raised my hands and brought them together and the earth closed and sealed itself. I knew at that point that I was dreaming. Since then ~18 or so years ago I have only had that dream a handful of times, back then it was from once a month to several times a week.
If you have any specific follow up questions I would be glad to answer to the best of my ability.

Prankster James Walsh noticed his wife Tasha fast asleep on a flight to Vietnam - and decided it was time to amuse his fellow passengers
We've all had that moment where we fall into an unbreakable sleep surrounded by hundreds of people.
Unfortunately for one snoozing plane passenger, that was the moment her husband decided it was time to break up the boredom of a long flight by playing for a few laughs.
Prankster James Walsh decided to amuse his fellow passengers by taking cruel advantage of his wife Tasha's slumber on a flight from London to Vietnam.
While filming his sleeping beauty - and realising she was well and truly out for the count -he takes the opportunity to engage in some makeshift ventriloquism.
His antics gained a few laughs from some passengers, and some sympathetic looks towards Tasha from others.
James has since shared the footage on Facebook to revel in his bride's misfortune.
He may need to sleep with one eye open on the return flight.
