A husband refused to go on a surprise vacation when he discovered his wife’s family would be going too.
He consulted Reddit’s r/ AmITheA****** forum to find out whether he had made the correct decision. His wife surprised him with a romantic dinner and a pre-planned three-week vacation in a secluded cabin — but that wasn’t all.
“I adore my wife but I absolutely hate her family. Her mom is a know-it-all who thinks everything is her business,” he wrote . “Her sisters are b***** snobs who criticize everything despite being anything but successful themselves. Their kids are spoiled brats. Her dad is just a broken man who seems to have given up decades ago and the rest of her extended family is pretty much like the rest. Somehow and in some way, my wife got all the good genes and ended up being an extremely sweet, beautiful, caring, empathetic woman.”
His wife surprised him with the trip, and at first, it sounded like a dream.
“My wife decided to surprise me. She prepared a really romantic meal, wine, candles — the whole shebang for my shabby a** after I got home from work,” he explained. “And she told me we were going on a three-week-long vacation to a secluded cabin in a great hiking area of my country. Given I had to take up my vacation weeks anyway, I was honestly pretty damn excited. I love hiking.”
“She revealed with the biggest smile that it would be a huge family vacation with her mom, her dad, her sisters, their kids and a cousin and her kids,” he said. “And honestly, my heart just dropped. Trust me, I do my absolute best to stand these people when I see them for the sake of my wife and act like the perfect son-in-law. But the idea of spending my only vacation days in a cabin with these absolutely horrible people is just a full-on no for me … I straight up said that I was not going to do that again and that she was free to go but I am not going. She started crying and seemed extremely upset I reacted the way I did, despite never hiding how I feel about her family.”
Reddit didn’t think the husband was obligated to go on the surprise vacation.
“A three-week vacation is something you discuss before finalizing plans,” one person commented .
“She’s free to spend time with her family, doesn’t mean you have to use up all your vacation time on them,” another wrote .
“She shouldn’t have expected you to go for three weeks with people she knows you don’t like,” someone else said .

Thanks for these great tips Dustin, after 9 years of marriage it is too easy to let things get stale and boring. I really love all of these tips and I’m going to be trying some of these out this weekend.
I do find it especially hard though since my husband has some mental health struggles that make so much of what you have suggested out of the question. Surprises, picnics and breakfast in bed are all out LOL.
I will try dressing up and perhaps slipping him some notes, it is great to get some ideas to try out.

This guy knew his wife was cheating on him, but wasn’t sure how to handle the situation. After a lot of thought and some clever planning, he figured out just the right way for him to confront her and make sure everyone knew that his wife was “rocking someone else” and that she was the one messing up their marriage. So I had a feeling she was cheating as she set off a lot of red flags. Constantly laughing and smiling when texting, saying it was just her mother when I asked. Needing to stay late every night after work. When I’d call in her co-workers said she left hours ago. When I asked her what was going on she’d laugh it off and say it was just something they did to each other at the office all the time.
The last straw to where I knew something was definitely up was when she went out “to get milk” at 11:30 at night and didn’t come back until 2 in the morning. Now if there is any words of wisdom I can pass on to others in all my years of experience, it’s if you think your significant other is cheating, hire a private investigator. They’re good at what they do and they will get some evidence that really helps in the later divorce.
Fast track to her birthday, several months down the road. Now I know what you’re thinking, why the hell did I wait months before I confronted her and did it really need to be on her birthday? The answer to the first question is I wanted as much evidence as possible to hand off to my lawyer as well as make arrangements to find a new place to live, etc. Answer to your second question is of course it had to be on her birthday. You see after asking her what she wanted to do on her birthday this year she was rather insisted on me going out of town with my friends as she just had to work anyways and didn’t want to be reminded she was aging.
So I know something is up and after finding a bottle of champagne and two glasses hidden in my closet something in me snaps. So I do what any sensible man would have done
