Alex Murdaugh appeared for a hearing Monday that devolved into a shouting match between defense and state prosecutors over the estimated $1 million worth of murder evidence allegedly tying the disgraced attorney and legal scion to the June 2021 double homicide of his wife and 22-year-old son.
Murdaugh’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, and deputy state attorney general Creighton Waters exchanged several fiery wars of words during the hearing at the Colleton County Courthouse, as Murdaugh sat stone-faced while listening.
At one point, Harpootlian accused prosecution of trying to "hijack" the hearing and withhold evidence.
"I don’t trust the state to honor the rules! They haven’t so far at this point," Harpootlian said. "I’m sorry if I’m being upset but every time we turn around they’re trying to hide something."

Meanwhile, Waters pleaded for a gag order to prevent some of the more sensitive evidence from being released to the public amid high pre-trial publicity, estimating that the material linking Murdaugh to the murders of his wife and son following a tight-lipped 13-month investigation is "probably worth over a million dollars."
"I don’t play fast and loose!" Waters yelled at one point, also denying allegations that the prosecution leaked any murder evidence details to the press.
He said the Murdaugh’s long spiraling fall from grace is "unprecedented" for South Carolina being that it involves violent crime and corruption on a scale "never seen before." In asking for the protective order, Waters remarked, "If not this case, what case?"
"The court has an independent responsibility and an obligation to avoid the creation of a carnival-type atmosphere in a case of this nature and I will do all I can to limit that," Judge Clifton Newman responded at one point. "But in this case we have gone from the parties seeking agreement in a gag order a few weeks ago to being at extreme odds at this point, claiming there is a violation of rules."

Newman granted the prosecution’s request for a gag order, but ordered that search warrants be unsealed and handled over as discovery to the defense.
Bare-bones indictments say Murdaugh, who dialed 911 himself to report the murders, fatally shot both wife Maggie and son Paul.

Disgraced South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh was charged Thursday with the double murder of his wife and son on their sprawling family farm last year.
Murdaugh, 54 — a fourth-generation lawyer from a powerful legal family — was indicted on two counts of murder and two counts of weapons possession in the grisly shooting deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22, the state’s district attorney, Alan Wilson, announced.
Murdaugh was allegedly tied to the killings via blood spatter on his clothing along with a video that put him at the murder scene, according to reports
His wife and son were gunned down near a dog kennel on the family’s 1,700-acre hunting estate in Islandton with at least two separate guns — a rifle and a shotgun — on June 7, 2021.
The elder Murdaugh called 911 and frantically told a dispatcher he had returned home to find the bullet-riddled bodies of his loved ones.
He claimed to have a solid alibi, saying he’d been visiting his dying father in the hospital and checking on his elderly mom when the double slaying unfolded.
But on Thursday, a source told CNN that blood spatter was found on Murdaugh’s clothing — a sign he may have been close to at least one of his family members when they were shot.
The source confirmed an earlier report in the local outlet FITSNews , which noted “high-velocity” impact spatter was found on the shirt he’d worn that night.
Investigators also have cellphone video that puts him near the murder scene at the time of the killings, contradicting his alibi claims, according to NBC.
After his wife and son were murdered, the prominent lawyer was hit with dozens of charges over his finances, including allegedly stealing millions and faking his own murder in a botched insurance scam to collect $10 million for his surviving son, Buster.
Murdaugh — who has since blamed his crimes on drug addiction — also stands accused of scamming millions of dollars from the family of his longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, 57, who died under suspicious circumstances at his home in 2018.
In total, he faces at least 71 charges that he stole $8.5 million from clients. The law firm founded by his family has also alleged that Murdaugh was fired after stealing money from the firm.
The fallen legal scion was charged last month with allegedly laundering millions of dollars in a scheme to distribute the painkiller oxycodone.
At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was awaiting trial in the 2019 drunken boating death of a young woman.
On Tuesday, Murdaugh was formally disbarred in South Carolina and was reportedly informed that he’d be charged with the murders of his wife and son.

Disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh is to appear in court on Monday after subpoenaing South Carolina law enforcement agents for evidence allegedly connecting him to the murders of his wife and son.
Murdaugh, who has pleaded not guilty to the double homicides, is expected to appear during a 10 a.m. hearing at the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro.
State prosecutors and defense will go head-to-head on several motions connected to discovery.
After subpoenas from defense, four agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are expected to testify on the murder case.

On July 14, A Colleton County Grand Jury indicted Murdaugh for two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection to the June 7, 2021, deaths of his wife, Maggie, 52, and their son Paul, 22.

Murdaugh’s attorneys have also subpoenaed SLED to hand over related incident reports, notes, search warrants and affidavits. Meanwhile, the state is expected to seek a protective order to prevent involved parties from discussing details of the murder case outside the courtroom, citing high pre-trial publicity and the sensitive nature of some evidence.
This comes after Judge Clifton Newman already denied a gag order in the case earlier this month.
The mysterious double homicides of Murdaugh’s college sweetheart wife, 52-year-old Maggie, and their youngest son, 22-year-old Paul, on their sprawling estate in the state’s Low Country on June 7, 2021, unleashed a slew of investigations into the finances of the powerful legal family that ran a prominent personal injury law firm for a century and had controlled the local prosecutors’ office for generations.
Murdaugh, 54, wasn’t formally charged for the killings until 13 months later by a Colleton County grand jury on July 14. The bare-bones indictments say Murdaugh, who dialed 911 himself to report the murders, fatally shot Maggie using a rifle and Paul with a shotgun but provide no further details.
Murdaugh has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges.

His defense attorney, Dick Harpootlian, hosted a press conference on Aug. 17 accusing state prosecutors of delaying discovery.
By the time the bombshell murder charges dropped, Murdaugh had already been charged with plotting a botched suicide-for-hire plot so that his surviving son, Buster, could collect a $10 million life insurance policy, embezzling large swaths of money from the law firm that once bore his name, the heirs of his own housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, and a laundry list of former legal clients turned alleged victims.
So far, Murdaugh has been indicted for schemes to defraud victims of nearly $8.5 million.
Law enforcement has also since reopened criminal probes into the mysterious deaths of Satterfield, as well as 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a former high school classmate of Buster Murdaugh.

Once-powerful South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh was allegedly tied to the double slaying of his wife and son by blood spatter on his clothing — as well as a video putting him at the murder scene, according to reports.
The jailed lawyer — who is expected to get charged with the murders as early as Thursday — had called 911 in June last year , claiming he had stumbled across the slain bodies on the ground outside his hunting lodge.
He claimed to have an ironclad alibi for when his wife, Maggie , 52, and son Paul, 22, were actually gunned down with two different weapons, a rifle and a shotgun.
However, a source told CNN Thursday that blood spatters were found on his clothing — suggesting he had been close to at least one of his family members at the time they were shot.
The source confirmed an earlier report in local outlet FITSNews , which said that a significant amount of high-velocity impact spatter was found on the shirt he’d worn that night.
It “could have only come from one thing,” a source had told the outlet, which has broken numerous stories in the case while producing a podcast, “Murdaugh Murders.”
On Wednesday, the “Today” show said that video footage was discovered placing the since-debarred lawyer at the murder scene.
That was actually video and footage recovered from his slain son’s phone, CNN’s source said Thursday, ahead of the expected charges.
Although Murdaugh was not seen in the video, he was heard talking to his wife — with a timestamp showing it was just before the slaying, when the lawyer claimed to be visiting his dying dad and checking on his mom, CNN said.
Investigators never sought any other suspects for the double slaying, which sparked a stunning fall from power for the lawyer, whose legal-dynasty family had for three generations served as 14th Circuit solicitor covering the state’s southern tip.
He is already behind bars in Columbia, South Carolina, on a $7 million bond facing dozens of charges for financial crimes and faking his own murder in an attempted life insurance scam. He also admitted to a secret yearslong battle with drug addiction .
Investigators visited his family on Tuesday to warn them that murder charges will be presented to a grand jury on Thursday, his lawyer has confirmed.
Murdaugh was also alerted to the likely charges, his attorneys, Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian, confirmed to CNN.
However, they “don’t know the existence or quality of any evidence since he hasn’t been charged,” they said of the outlet’s report on video footage and blood spatters.
Murdaugh was also formally disbarred Tuesday over his “admitted reprehensible misconduct” that already led to “myriad criminal charges.”
A spokesperson for South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) would only say that its “investigation into the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh is still active and ongoing.”
“Agents are committed to the integrity of the investigation, thus no additional information from SLED will be provided at this time,” the spokesperson said.
