This is a movie that shows several painful experiences that the 'woman behind the man' often experiences, only in this film it adds an excruciating twist. Throughout the film, it shows how the perspective is isn't in the view of the 'winner,' but from the perspective of the 'wind beneath the wings' and it is possibly one of the darkest depictions of what it is for a woman to be no more than the iron in the spine of a spineless man. Throughout the film, it shows how the husband who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize, wins it, and is dropping little hints about Joe's less than primary role in the writing of all those award winning books. Then later on it is revealed in full that Joe was just a front for his wife, who was the real author and the real talent. It shows how Joe quietly zeroed in on Joan and ended up cleverly grooming her while she was just a student. During her impressionable school years she was subtly, but effectively brainwashed into thinking that she would never make it, that the patriarchy and odds were against her and how she was shunted into doing all the work while her increasingly unappreciative husband took all the credit and awards and reveled in the glory of it all. She enjoyed the ride, but ended up being just an accessory to a man's perfect life, a chip in her husband's game. This is when the pathos becomes fully understandable and complete. This is a woman who has basically been passed by. The nomination for the prize that should have been her nomination, becomes that of her husband's. The prize that is awarded to him, is something that should have been hers after decades of work. After her husband's repeated experiences of being feted, she realizes that while he goes off to be revered, she is left behind or encouraged to 'look after' her already coddled husband, or worse, fall in with the other wives for shopping excursions. To make it worse, her husband Joe jokes about how he is 'glad his wife doesn't write' and then he made a series of other patronizing remarks and insulted her during a condescending part of his speech. All the while, because of HER work, that she herself should have been the one getting nominated, awarded, and then feted in Stockholm. Then there is the infidelity, which is almost a final slap in the face. Interestingly, there were brief segments where an aspiring biographer chats with Joan about her life as a student and he successfully pries out the truth that Joan was the one doing all the work. Then during the run up ot the final presentation of the award, Joe suffers minor heart issues that culminates in a heart attack and right when Joan had a chance to set the record straight, she ends up protecting her feckless, unfaithful husband and threatens to sue the biographer who could tell the world who the real talent is, who truly deserved the Nobel Prize for Literature. Instead of taking control of all of it (reputation as an author/narrative for the public), she throws it all away. She might have had the chance to snatch ultimate success and status for herself in her own right at that very point, but she threw it away and as a result, does not exalt her feminine strength as a woman, but instead utterly demeans and diminishes herself.

This was an excellent movie! I watched it several times. I remember writing songs and my ex received the credit. It happened to me sharing ideas and concepts with supervisors and others received the credit. Watch how the wife(Glenn Close) handle her situation. This a noteworthy film.

Meg Wolitzer’s novel, The Wife, came out in 2003 and I devoured it. The author is so superb in her characterizations, much like the wife, Joan’s writing. I was anxious to see the film edition, and it is almost as good as the book. Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce are exactly as I pictured this couple. Joan met her professor husband, Joe ,while taking a course in writing at Smith. As she says the worst part of their life together was splitting the marriage of his first wife and their daughter. They married, had children, Joe wrote books and Joan gave up her writing career, she tells everyone. But, as we learn there are secrets here. We meet them as Joe receives a call he has won the Pulitzer in Literature. They rejoice and plan their trip. We meet their daughter, pregnant with child, and Joan and Joe’s son who attends the celebration party at home. We can tell at once that the son, David, and dad, Joe do not get along. As thefilm proceeds we are with them on their trip to Stockholm. We learn about Joe’s obsession with other women, and we meet a journalist who wants to write Joe’s biography. Dirty little secrets abound, and how this all plays out in the brunt of the book. This is such a beautiful presentation by Glenn Close, she becomes Joan in her facial expressions an$ her bod6 actions, an$ Of course, her words. The Oscar should be hers. The film is well done, jus5 right, and Joe, well, Joe deserves his ending. Recommended. prisrob 02-02-19

Ms. Close has the range to depict a woman in diverse roles. She has an uncanny ability to capture the soul of the main character. I looked at her facial expressions and that was all I needed to know about The Wife. She emerged from this film with a Golden Globe and a signal to many women of all ages, but mostly those of us that married in the 60's and 70's. Before women were "allowed" to become the great writers, they could be an editor or be accepted to write about some frivolity. In this movie, Joan is now the wife a Nobel Prize Winner for Literature. Without giving away too much plot, the viewer just needs to watch her reactions to her husband's attempt at sex or her husband's treatment of their son. Basking in the glory of "his" prize, we learn about Joan as a co-ed and her constant need to write and please her husband. She is a good mother and an excellent wife, if we define wife as an obsequious partner. Ms. Close's stature in each scene is remarkable, you may or may not know what she is thinking, you may understand or not when she decides to take control of a situation; she is a complex woman, a good actress as a wife and yet, she has stored up her own bitterness and rightfully so.

The Wife - is an amazing film! I suspect most people already know that given the fact that it's Glen Close and Jonathan Pryce! I don't think Hollywood could have done better. I believe Glen Close was coming off of a hiatus - did this film and received a Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Jonathan Pryce got an Oscar nomination as well, I believe for best supporting. I believe the film got many other nominations as well. And, the fact that Glen Close was able to do all of that after being off for a bit cements most definitely why she is one of the queens of Hollywood. I'm not going to say too much about the film because I really wouldn't be able to do it justice. One needs to see this film, but in a nut shell, Jonathan Pryce is an author who is nominated and wins the noble prize for literature, and Glen Close is his wife ... now, with that in mind, see the film! Just, see the film. Oh, and a very fine performance by Max Irons (Jeremy Iron's son) and Christian Slater.
