I’m wife I’ve Finished That Very Short Question Answer is a post on very short question-answer from Emily Dickinson’s poem I’m wife I’ve Finished That.
In the post, I’m wife I’ve Finished That Very Short Question Answer, you will find a total of 19 very short answer type questions along with answers from all the stanzas of the poem, I’m wife I’ve Finished That.
I’m wife I’ve Finished That Very Short Question Answer post that has been divided into four sections for your convenience. In the first part, you will find short questions and their answers about the poem in general. The rest is divided according to stanzas.
Now, follow I’m wife I’ve Finished That Very Short Question Answer.
Answer: The life of a female is divided into two phases. The first phase is of a girl i.e. of an unmarried female. The second or rather the final stage is of a woman i.e. of a married female. A girl enjoys unlimited liberty but a woman has to sacrifice her personal desires to the demands of society.
Answer: According to the speaker girlhood is that phase when a female is young and not married. Naturally, such a person has the liberty to think and act as she wishes. Such liberty is not enjoyed by a woman. One can compare girlhood to living in heaven so far as liberty is concerned.
Answer: According to the speaker womanhood is the second as well as the final phase in the life of a female. She is married. She has no liberty in thinking and action because she has to sacrifice her personal desires to the demands of society. This phase of life however has the acceptability of the society.
Answer: In “I’m wife I’ve Finished That” Dickinson has used contrast to great effect. The first contrast is between girlhood and womanhood. There is the liberty of thought and action in girlhood but this liberty is completely absent in womanhood. Another contrast used here is between ‘heaven’ and ‘earth’ though it is not as evident as the previous one.
Answer: Dickinson’s “I’m Wife I’ve Finished That” is about a comparative study of girlhood and womanhood —- the two phases in the life of a female. Girlhood embodies unlimited freedom in thought and action and it is not approved by society. Womanhood implies sacrificing this freedom to the demands of society and it has social acceptance.
Answer: Dickinson’s “I’m Wife I’ve Finished That” is divided into three stanzas with each stanza being a quatrain. The first stanza presents the existence of a female as a woman. The second stanza quite suggestively presents the life of a female as a girl. The third and final stanza establishes the pointlessness of making a comparison between these two phases.
Answer: Dickinson’s life as a spinster has helped her to have a complete view of girlhood i.e. the premarital stage of a female. From society, she has gathered information about womanhood i.e. the life of a married female. In “I’m Wife, I’ve Finished That” she has made a comparative study of both the stages of a female’s life.
Answer: The speaker wants to draw a comparison between the life of a girl and that of a woman. The life of a woman having freedom of thought and action is different from that of a girl. A woman can best make this comparison. It is to justify her position in making this comparison that the speaker says “I’m wife”.
Answer: The speaker is married. So she is a woman. Thus she has finished her existence as a girl.
Actually, we refer to a young unmarried female as a girl and an elder married female as a woman. Thus womanhood may be looked upon as the death of girlhood. However, these phases succeed one-another.
Answer: The word ‘Czar’ refers to the ruler of Russia before 1947.
Since the speaker is married, she has lost her independence. Such a person can never become a Czar. Thus marriage creates an obstacle upon her becoming a ruler —- even a ruler of her own self. It is this helplessness on her part which is conveyed through this ironic expression.
Answer: In the lifetime of the speaker it was a norm for a female to get married, have a family, beget children and thus lead a stereotyped life. Thus the life of a woman, though characterised by a compromise of freedom of thought and action, is secure and socially accepted. Therefore the speaker says, “I’m woman now – It’s safer so”.
Answer: The life of a woman, i.e. a married female is devoid of independence of thought and action but it has the acceptance of the society.
However, the life of a girl. i.e an unmarried female is marked by independence and it does not have acceptance by society. Hence the girl’s life appears ‘odd’.
Answer: In the context of the life of a woman the word ‘Eclipse’ refers to the absence of independence. There is a sense of independence in the life of a girl but the sense of independence is absent in the life of a woman. This absence occurs normally and so it is called ‘soft’.
Answer: The word ‘Earth’ here refers to the people of the earth. They feel that “folks in Heaven” enjoy a secure life. They do not keep into consideration that these people have to compromise their independence of thought and action with the decree of God. Here the speaker suggests that the life of a woman is heavenly in this sense.
Answer: The people of the earth think that people in heaven enjoy a secure life. Similarly, the people of the earth simply think that the life of a married woman is secure. In both cases, a compromise of freedom of thought and action is included. So the speaker says “Earth feels so/ To folks in Heaven”.
Answer: The people of the earth think that the life of married women is heavenly in the sense that it is secure. However, the reality is that such women have to compromise their freedom of thought and action. Moreover, the life of a woman has the acceptance of society. These apparently positive things give ‘comfort’ to the speaker.
Answer: By the phrase “That other kind” the speaker means the existence of a girl or an unmarried female.
She calls it ‘pain’ because in the context of the popular belief the life of a married woman is heavenly and so the life of a girl should be noted for ‘pain’ i.e problems.
Answer: Once a girl has become a woman i.e a married female, it is not possible for her to return to her previous existence, i.e. girlhood. It is because of this impossibility that there is no need to compare these two kinds of existence on their positive sides and negative sides.
4. Why does the speaker say, “I’m wife! Stop there!”?
Answer: The speaker is already married i.e. she is a woman. This is the second and final stage of her life. The first stage of her life is girlhood. She has already passed it. Moreover, there is no scope for her returning to girlhood. Hence rather than comparing womanhood with girlhood she should conclude the discussion.
