In the weeks leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, several prominent right-wing activists aggressively promoted the “Save America Rally” that U.S. President Donald Trump would later use as a platform to encourage thousands of people to march to the Capitol, leading to at least five deaths and the delay of the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Following the melee, journalists and activists have scrutinized the roles of various individuals involved in the promotion of demonstrations that day. On Jan. 7, 2021, Slate reporter Mark Joseph Stern highlighted the fact that the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Ginni, had enthusiastically promoted the protests and praised the participants:
By the weekend, this observation had formed the basis of a false rumor that Thomas not only supported the protesters as shown on Facebook, but that she “funded 80 buses to transport insurrectionists to D.C. on Wednesday.”
The rumor stems from the unproven assertion made by Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who claimed on Twitter two days before the riots (before deleting the tweet after they turned violent) that he and his organizations — both Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action USA — would be sending “80+ buses full of patriots to DC to fight for this president.” The link to Thomas gained prominence online when it was promoted virally in a user-submitted blog post on the left-wing site DailyKos. That post’s argument stems from tweets tying Thomas to Turning Point USA and other right-wing political organizations involved in the rally.
While we point out that Kirk, no stranger to false claims, has provided no evidence of his organization’s funding of 80 buses to the rally, the link to Thomas — based on her work with Turning Point USA — is out-of-date even if Kirk is telling the truth. It is true that Thomas was once on the “Advisory Council” for Turning Point USA, a body that has at times included over 75 people , but she has not served in that role since at least early 2019, according to Turning Point USA’s website.
Thomas is indeed a well-known right-wing organizer and conspiracy theorist. She provided Trump with several memos outlining what she believed to be government officials unfaithful to Trump, lobbied successfully for appointments of Trump loyalists to government posts, and along with other activists met with him in 2019 to discuss “appointments … that they accused the president’s aides of blocking,” for example. In 2016 — as Snopes reported in an October 2020 investigation , she was also part of efforts to promote false talking points regarding illegal voting by immigrants in the 2016 election.
However, as Stern, the Slate reporter, tweeted : “even if [Turning Point USA] funded transportation to the insurrection (and we should not automatically believe Charlie Kirk), Thomas had nothing to do with it.” As such, the claim that Ginni Thomas organized “80 buses” for the Save America Rally is false.

A six-hour bus ride in Costa Rica quickly turned into a nightmare for a young woman Monday.
The woman, identified only by her Facebook name of Fabiola CH, was traveling from Guanacaste to San José when she recorded the man in the seat behind her reaching down her shirt for more than a minute.
After she apparently pretended to be asleep in order to catch him in the act, she was able to use her cell phone to document the disturbing confrontation that she then posted to social media. In a Facebook post she explained how the man touched her multiple times before she even decided to record what was happening.

“Normally I’m not used to making these types of posts but I feel really upset, because this morning I was coming from Guanacaste to San José on an Empresa Alfaro bus and the passenger behind me tried to touch me on multiple occasions,” the woman identified as Fabiola says in the post. “I decided to record a video and show it to those in charge of the bus, but the only thing they told me I could do was change my seat.”
Multiple attempts by The Tico Times to speak with representatives from Empresa Alfaro bus company went unanswered Tuesday morning. The bus company takes riders between multiple points in the Guanacaste province and Costa Rica’s capital, San José.
“I couldn’t sleep calmly on a six-hour bus ride,” the post continued. “It seems incredible to me that you have to become accustomed to this type of harassment and that it’s now something so common that no one does anything about it. I ask that if any one comes to recognize the person that they help me so that I can present a complaint.”
In the video above, courtesy of the Calles Liberia Facebook page, she managed to film the man’s face, which is partially blocked by sunglasses and a white hoodie.
Last August, the Costa Rican government launched an ad campaign to address this specific form of sexual harassment that happens in public environments like buses. According to a 2016 University of Costa Rica report cited by the campaign team at the time, six out of every 10 women in the country say they have been the victims of sexual harassment in public.
What’s most interesting about the campaign and how it relates to Monday’s disturbing case is that it promised bus drivers would be trained to act accordingly when a female victim complains about harassment.
Common cases of sexual harassment here involve catcalling, vulgar gesturing, and even groping or indecent exposure. These types of crimes happen so often on public buses that campaign coordinators and government officials have urged bus operators to provide better aid for victims.
In a notable win for sexual harassment advocates earlier this year, a 62-year-old man was given three years and eight months of jail time for a January incident on a San José bus in which he touched a woman’s rear end twice with his genitals.
Four days after the sentencing, another man was arrested for taking out his genitals and rubbing them against a woman on a public bus.

Less than perfect, More than enough.
I had something happen to me a few nights ago that I haven’t been able to get off my mind.
The other evening I finished my night class. I had to rush to catch the early bus and stood on the corner waving like a mad woman so the bus driver would see me as he made his way around the corner.
I had spent the day at the library studying for an exam. My daughter cried when I left because she hadn’t been able to cuddle with me “All day!” I missed my husband and my girl. My mind drifted to my warm, cozy bed where I would soon find solace. While wallowing in self-pity, a woman and her two small children came onto the bus. She and her youngest sat in the seat ahead of me, and her oldest filled the vacant seat beside me. She gave me a tired smile. I smiled back, noting she was likely close to my daughter’s age.
Within minutes, she had fallen asleep. Her little head bobbed on and off of my shoulder.
“I don’t mind.” I replied. I honestly didn’t. It was late, and obviously past bedtime.
As I stared down at the sleeping girl beside me, I found myself judging this mom.
Why were her kids up so late? What was she doing on the bus at this hour?
They should be home in bed, I self-righteously said to myself.
By the time we reached the bus station, both children were sound asleep. I offered to help the mom carry her babies and her bags off the bus. When we got off the bus to a deserted station, I began to sense her panic. It was dark, it was cold, and it was late. I could see the tears welling up in her eyes.
“I don’t know what to do,” she said, hugging her youngest close to her chest.
I knew I needed to help her. I offered to give her a ride. She hesitated. I told her I would drive her wherever they needed to go. Again, she hesitated. I reassured her I didn’t mind, to please let me help her. Then, in a faint voice, she told me.
I immediately understood her hesitation.
We bundled her babies up in my car. As I began to drive through the darkness, I felt my knuckles clench around the steering wheel.
I desperately wanted to ask her if she needed anything.
I desperately wanted to ask her if I could help her.
I desperately wanted to ask her name.
The soft breathing from her sleeping babies in the backseat was the only sound we heard. As we neared our destination, she softly said, “I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through so much. I am grateful you were on our bus tonight.”
I reached over and squeezed her hand. “I am grateful I was on your bus tonight, too.”
I pulled into a dark alleyway and put my vehicle in park. A row of ordinary townhouses stood in front of us. Townhouses I had driven by countless times, and never realized the haven they were providing.
I reached to unbuckle my seatbelt, but her voice stopped me.
“You can’t come in. We aren’t supposed to tell anyone where these safe houses are. I don’t want to get in trouble. We have nowhere else to go.”
I bit my lip to stop myself from crying. I watched as she unbuckled the youngest and softly woke the oldest. As the door closed she thanked me one last time. I sat for a minute, with my lights off, to make sure they got in safely.
My heart ached. In an instant I was brought back to reality. I was brought back to how profoundly blessed I am. How mediocre and ridiculous my earlier worries seemed. I drove home, hot tears spilling down my face. When I walked through the door of my warm, safe home, and saw my husband, my heart exploded. I couldn’t muster any words.
He wrapped me in his loving arms as I explained what had happened.
It took me a long time to fall asleep that night. I am still thinking about this woman. I feel grateful for being able to help her, but I feel incredibly embarrassed for judging her.
I had no idea the story of her life.
Sometimes people are put in our path to influence our lives, and this woman did exactly that. Through our brief encounter, this woman exemplified strength and courage. Her love for her children was evident. She reminded me of something I often forget. This woman helped me remember to be thankful for each and every day. But, most importantly, she reminded me of the importance of kindness. We never know the path someone else is traveling.
The lessons she reminded me of are simple:
This experience will stay with me forever. I will likely never see this woman again. But, if I ever do, I will tell her how brave and strong she truly is.

God bless that dear woman and her children. And God bless you for being there for them. We honestly have no idea what someone has gone through. I was at Wal-mart one day checking out when I started a conversation with the older lady behind the register who was ringing up our purchases. It was casual at first. She was a beautiful woman. She seemed so much more put together than I felt in my messy life. I just instantly liked her. It was not long before our light conversation took a turn. As the other customers waited in line, she began to tell her story. She has two children. They are both grown. Her baby girl moves out on her own for the first time. The woman talks to her daughter that night. They said the I love yous and would talk the next day. But they didn’t. Her daughter died that night from carbon monoxide poisoning in her new apartment. I had no idea from looking at her what she had gone through.
I turned as we said our good-byes, for the first time noticing the line behind me. The faces weren’t ones of frustration, though they may have been at first. They seemed touched and a little in shock at what we had just all learned of this woman’s story. Everyone has a story. That was just one of the lessons I learned that day. Everyone has a story…even when they look like they have it all together and live a beautiful life. They have a story.
Thank you so much for sharing yours and this family’s story with us. We all need this reminder.
I’m sharing this on my Facebook page for others to be blessed by it.
Lovely. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.
This as so moving… thank you for reminding me how blessed I am….
What a heartwarming story, thank you for sharing!
