Why the re-elections? The new DA head explains
SU: Media + DAHi! I'm Albert, a second-year student. Within the Student Union, I mostly worked on protecting students' rights in the dorms.
Why were changes needed at all?
We truly value the dorm leaders who genuinely put in the effort. But unfortunately, the overall picture was bleak: the whole system was carried by just a couple of people, while some leaders existed purely on paper and took no part in dorm life.
How do we fix this?
We realized full re-elections were necessary. And we're not just replacing people — we're changing the approach itself. Previously, dorm leaders were appointed by the dorm administration. From now on, students themselves will decide who represents their interests.
When we discussed these changes with the administration, they suggested merging the dorm leaders into the SU. We rejected that idea. We insisted on creating the Dorm Association as an independent organization with new, fair elections.
And no — this is not an attempt by the Student Union to absorb or expand anything. DA is a separate structure where students make all the decisions.
The new rules are as transparent as possible:
1. Only current students without disciplinary records who live on campus can become dorm leaders.
2. All students can vote and choose.
There are also bonuses for prefects of the buildings, such as innopoints and discounts on dormitory housing.
One question remains: why did I automatically become the head of DA, if we advocate so strongly for fair elections and giving power to students?
Believe me, I fully understand how this looks. But to build and launch a transparent system from scratch, someone needs to run the transition period. Since I already have experience defending students' interests in the dorms and an established line of communication with the administration, I took on the initial coordination.
I'm not asking you to trust me blindly — I'm asking for a little time to prove myself and show that the new format actually works. I'm counting on your support, your feedback, and your willingness to build all of this together with me. The mechanism of fair elections stays in place: if, after some time, you decide my approach to developing the dorms doesn't work for you, you can simply vote me out, and I will step down.
In closing
Current active dorm leaders who are still students can — and I sincerely hope will — run for re-election, along with any other students who want to shape dorm life and make it better. The choice is entirely yours now.
Thank you for hearing us out. Let's build an honest and transparent system together!
