The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

The album was a return to the band's best form, and the tour that came with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
