The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Origins

You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock group however it's actually a fairly straight forward rock band. The group started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distorted AOR and could sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the group embarked on an extensive world tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the group. The group, which was missing Howe who was occupied with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
