Lolita's Personality

It is important to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and play. They require 2 to 3 hours a day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but is also a great companion for children.
Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud cries that can be a nuisance to those living in condos or apartments.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to tell apart. Due to this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is not a quick process, and it is essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this isn't a task to be taken lightly. Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who are close to their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild.
