Pragmatic is an adjective that refers to people who are practical and sensible. People who are pragmatic are interested in what actually works in the real world, and do not get caught up in theorizing about ideals that may not be applicable in reality.

The word pragmatic comes from the Latin Praegere, which means "to grasp hold of." Pragmatism is a philosophy that views the world as being inseparable from the agency within it. It also considers knowledge as the result of experience and focuses on how knowledge is applied.

William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new name for old methods of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New name for Old Ways of Thinkin'" was an attempt to address this. Other philosophers who developed pragmatist ideas in the 1900s included George Herbert Mead and W.E.B Du Bois, who came up with the pragmatist view of social science and the study of race relations; Alain Locke, who created pragmatist views on the structure of science and education; and John Dewey, who articulated the pragmatist views in areas such as public policy education, democracy, and the public sector.

Today, pragmatism continues influence the development of scientific and technological applications as well as the design and evaluation of curriculums and educational programs.
