It was only a matter of time. Hot off the heels of Goop’s “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle, a Canadian company is promoting a “This Smells Like My Penis” candle . This genital-themed home fragrance is selling for $100, and the product description explains that the candle costs 25% more than its vagina-smelling equivalent to reflect the gender pay gap.
The new candle seems more political statement than legit gift opportunity. But it still raises an important question: what should a penis smell like—and is there a “normal” penis smell?
Yes and no, Mike Bohl, MD, MPH, from digital men’s health clinic Roman , tells Health. “Certain parts of the body that are covered in skin don’t feel like they smell,” he says. “For instance, if you smell your forearm right now, it probably doesn’t have an odor that you can detect, unless you recently used soap, cologne, or perfume.”
The same goes for the penis—at least, a well-cleaned penis following a shower. After that, things can get rank. “There are a couple of reasons a penis can pick up an odor over the course of the day,” Dr. Bohl says.
First, sweat glands. “Most of the body is covered in sweat glands called eccrine glands, which secrete water and salt and are good for cooling off the body," explains Dr. Bohl. "But there’s another kind of sweat gland called an apocrine gland, which are larger, secrete additional compounds like proteins and fats, and they are largely responsible for body odor.”
Apocrine glands are only found in certain parts of the body, such as the armpits and—you guessed it—the groin. “For this reason, the penis may actually smell more like an armpit than like your forearm after a long day of sweating,” he says.
Another reason the penis might smell a little funky is because of where it spends most of the day. “It’s confined in underwear, which is further confined in pants, and it probably doesn’t move around that much," says Dr. Bohl. "There is less fresh air in the area and it is also more difficult for sweat and dead skin cells to fall away—it all basically stays pressed up against the penis.”
If you think about it, this is kind of like what we do to our feet, keeping them confined in socks and shoes all day—and most people would say that their feet smell.
Finally—and ew —if a guy's underwear isn’t clean, some residual urine from the last time he used the bathroom is in the mix as well. This one doesn’t really need much explanation, right?
If a penis smells a little like an armpit or a foot at the end of the day, it’s probably not a cause for concern, suggests Dr. Bohl. Soaping up in the shower should get rid of the funk. But if the penis has a particularly bad odor, or it can't simply be washed away, this might indicate a health problem.
If a man is also experiencing discharge and it smells, he could have an sexually transmitted infection like gonorrhea or chlamydia. “Descriptions of what exactly the odor smells like vary from mushrooms to ammonia,” says Dr. Bohl. “But in general, having any sort of discharge from the penis should prompt you to see a health care provider.”
Another possible cause of a smelly penis is a buildup of smegma, a cheese-like substance consisting of naturally-secreted oils, dead skin cells, and moisture. It’s more common in men who are uncircumcised, says Dr. Bohl, because it can get trapped under the foreskin. He advises careful washing of the penis in the shower, and if there is any smegma buildup, it should be wiped away.
If the penis isn’t adequately cleaned, or if there is residual smegma, men can get a condition called balanitis, which is inflammation of the head of the penis. “Balanitis can be very uncomfortable and may also cause the penis to smell,” adds Dr. Bohl.
Okay, so what about semen? The smell situation is a little different here. Because semen is a bodily fluid, it does have a characteristic smell. “Semen is slightly alkaline (the opposite of acidic) on the pH scale, and many people consider semen to smell like bleach or ammonia, which are both alkaline substances,” says Dr. Bohl says.
So while it's normal for semen to have an odor, a change in scent—like it becomes foul—can be a clue to a health issue, such as an STI. “If the urethra (the tube that urine and semen travel through) is filled with discharge from an infection like chlamydia or gonorrhea, that discharge can mix with the semen, giving it an odor (and possibly a slightly different color as well),” Dr. Bohl explains.
You might have heard that eating certain foods can change the smell of semen. While Dr. Bohl says this hypothesis isn’t backed up by science, it’s definitely possible that certain foods can affect semen’s smell. If you’re up for a little experimentation, eating fish, meat, and asparagus reportedly make semen smell worse—while eating citrus fruits and pineapple make it a little sweeter.

Your groin is the perfect incubator for unpleasant smells: It’s hot, humid, and tucked beneath layers of clothing. So sometimes, it's just not going to smell so great.
If you're talking run-of-the mill not smell so great, chances are, you're fine and can make a few tweaks in what you're doing or what you're wearing to keep your penis from smelling. But if you're having discharge and a strong, unpleasant smell, check with a doctor; it could signal a sexually transmitted infection like gonorrhea or chlamydia.
If it's just an end-of-the-day smell and situation, welcome to being normal. “Sweat and moisture mix with the natural bacteria on your skin to cause body odor,” explains Kelley Pagliai Redbord, M.D., a dermatologist at George Washington University. Same way it happens under your arms. (It's not the sweat that smells, it's only when it mixes with bacteria that it starts to create an odor.)
Specifically, your groin contains a number of apocrine glands that release secretions which, when mixed with sweat, can lead to some scents you'd rather not have, she adds.
Fortunately, there are some pretty easy things you can do to keep your penis from smelling:
Really, just a trim. Pubic hair traps dampness and odors, and also makes it difficult for the underlying skin to stay cool and dry, Redbord says. You don’t have to shave yourself bare. But pruning with a beard trimmer can help keep odors at bay, she says.
You’ve already lost the war if you fail to clean out the bad-smelling gunk that accumulates in the many folds and clefts that comprise your groin area, says Tobias Köhler, M.D., a urologist at Southern Illinois University.
He says elbow grease and attention to detail are the most important parts of washing. “Don’t just wipe some soap on the area,” he warns. “Use some pressure and get into all those crevices.”
An antibacterial soap could also help if all else fails, Redbord says. But stay way from soaps with heavy scents and harsh chemicals. And if you’re uncircumcised, be sure to clean below your foreskin, she stresses. Secretions from oil glands and dead skin cells can build up under there and invite bacteria buildup—in other words, invite stink to your penis.
“Reduce moisture, and you’ll reduce body odor,” Redbord promises. To do that, she says it’s necessary to fully dry out your junk before dressing—especially during the summer when you’re hot all the time. Of course, dampness can also lead to jock itch. Guys prone to it often finish with an antifungal powder. Or even regular corn starch baby powder.
Damp towels or washcloths also accumulate bacteria, so they could contribute to your problem, Redbord adds. Make sure you’re using clean, dry linens every time you step out of the shower.
Cotton is breathable, and so wearing cotton briefs and clothing can help keep your penis stink-free, Redbord says.
In the middle of the summer when the temps and humidity skyrocket, a swipe of underarm deodorant on the underside of your scrotum can also help target the area of your worst odor, she adds.

I am a 21 year old male. for the past year and a half I've been experiencing a very foul sour odor from my groin area. i have been experiencing excessive sweating in that area. i am a very active individual and used to play basketball on a regular basis. my sweat never used to emit this sort of odor at all. The sweat is originating from the creases in the groin. its a very uncomfortable sensation. i have tried using powders, different soaps, and colognes. the odor is just so pungent that none of these helps for every long at all.
To describe the odor, i would say that it is just very sour. Period. It encompasses large areas and even though i take 2 showers everyday, there seems to be no improvement. it extremely embarrassing and is causing me a lot of anxiety. i don't go out or play sports anymore. i just go for runs on my own. i am not overweight. i stand at about 6"1 and am 170 lbs.
again, this has been occurring for about a year and a half, my family physician hasn't provided any help at all. i am a smoker and i also do not have any sexually transmitted diseases as i have been tested already. a main concern of mine is if this could be caused by over masturbation?

Try boric acid. It's an otc ointment. Sweat contains bacteria. Bacteria is an living organism and all living organisms defecate (pass waste) at some time. What you are smelling is the waste, and boric acid not only neutralizes the smell, but also kills the bacteria.
The odor could definitely be caused by bacteria – even when you shower every day, microorganisms can thrive in the genital area because of the warm, damp environment. One solution would be to try a penis health cream (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) containing vitamin A, which is a natural antibacterial and can help to eliminate odors from the penis and groin area. Smoking can also give sweat a sour smell, so you may want to seriously consider quitting.
On a similar page someone suggested using boric acid, and spraying your groin area, penis before and after your shower. I did this, and within a week I am sweet again downstairs, TRY IT. I had tried literally everything before.
We'll guy I have finally beaten this weird itchy nasty smelling rash in my groin. I've tried a lot of different stuff but this is exactly what I did and woke up and it was gone! 1. I shaved with a razor all around the area that was bothering me in the shower 2. Used normal body was like Axe but I used my hunting body wash that is antibacterial and scrubbed entire area 3. Hello. I suffered from this issue for years. It made my personal life very difficult, no soap, powder, deodorant, or other cleaning product helped. Then I stumbled upon Defense Soap and Defense Soap wipes. Defense Soap is about $4 a bar, so I just use it on the typically smelly parts of my body and use normal soap everywhere else. My routine is as followed: wash groin and anus region with Defense Soap. Scrub area, let sit for two minutes, rinse, and wash again. Dry off well after shower, make sure no area is wet. Then for extra effect, I wipe the same area with a defense soap wipe. Now I can go a whole day without any smells. It has changed my life.
