Survival is the act of staying out of harm and danger as well as maximising the resources required to live in this earth.
Shyness is not a disadvantageous trait as one might think. It is very useful survival skill for an ordinary human being who does not have any power,prestige or massive amount of wealth.
Staying out of life threatening situations is a survival skill actually. If a blood curdling conflict can be avoided by being a little meek then I would definitely do it. Men being more prone to violence will also exhibit this trait. Sometimes in life we have to get bullied. For example people get bullied by their bosses because they need wages and income to live.
One more thing is that survival is not replication. Survival comes first and then we replicate. Also you should remove the one side theory that men are the agressors and women are the receptors.
Uptil a century ago 90% of marriages were finalised by the parents only. So shyness is a plus point in arranged marriages as elders feel shy men will take care of their daughters and not pose harm. In an era where Domestic violence was rampant, a shy and meek gentleman is a blessing! Trust me. Besides women want passive and peaceful men as husbands and father of their children.

I believe that the first argument suffices in this case: being shy need not be maladaptive. Not every woman wants a man who fights, and might even prefer one who isn't fighting all the time. Reproduction is more than just the actual fooling-around part: you need to raise the child to adulthood for the genes to really be passed on. A shy person may be more intimate with a single partner, and be less likely to stray, so all of the resources go into raising their children more effectively.
It's a different strategy than the "spread your seed everywhere" strategy that is the stereotypical male, but the world is not limited to a single strategy. Being out-competed is actually rare among humans; they are uniquely adaptable and can live practically anywhere. As long as a trait allows you to reproduce and raise children, it won't be eliminated.
The second argument is also crucial. There is almost certainly no single "shyness gene". There is a good chance that a predisposition to shyness can be inherited (by parenting if not by genetics), but society also plays a crucial role. The net result of society probably produces a certain percentage of shy people, no matter what, due to the range of strategies that can be adopted, irrespective of genes.
Evolution is much better at combating "Doesn't this disprove evolution" arguments than it is at explaining behavior. There are tentative steps made, but evolution operates on the body, and the relationship between the body and behavior is far beyond our understanding at the moment. Nobody can look at a brain and tell you how somebody will behave (though there is remarkable progress being made on that score), even on a full actual body, much less the vastly convoluted process by which the genome produces the structure of the brain. It is definitely a work in progress, and a promising one, but far from complete.
