The Scold's Bridle was an iron cage for a woman's face, used to punish "scolds" – women who nagged, gossiped, talked back, or just talked too much. The bridle would be locked on to your head, and a protruding piece of metal covered in spikes would be forced inside your mouth. Every time you moved your tongue, the spikes would lacerate it.
Sometimes the bridled woman was chained to a hook by the fireplace in her home until she learned her lesson. Or she might be led through town wearing the mask to increase her humiliation.
This was a type of yoke, a wooden restraint used to punish brawling women and scolds. A woman might be made to wear one alone, perhaps walking up and down for two hours as punishment, or she might be locked up with the woman she was fighting with.
This punishment was a means of humiliation. Both men and women were put in the cucking stool, but it was a particularly popular punishment for women accused of being scolds or harlots. You would be strapped to a wooden chair without a seat – often a commode, or toilet – and then either forced to sit outside your own house, or paraded through the town.
According to writer William Borlase, it was a "seat of infamy, where strumpets and scolds, with bare feet and head, were condemned to abide the derision of those that passed by".
The ducking stool was a cucking stool with knobs on: It was attached to long beams of wood, which hinged on an axel. The chair was then suspended over a river or pond, with the scold or strumpet strapped into it, then dunked as many times as her punishment dictated, “ to cool her immoderate heat ,” as the French writer Francois Maximilien Misson put it. In some cases, women would be ducked so many times they died.
If jarring females kindle strife, Give language foul, or lug the coif; If noisy dames should once begin To drive the house with horrid din, Away, you cry, you’ll grace the stool, We’ll teach you how your tongue to rule.
The thewe was a type of pillory (similar to stocks) specifically for women. The woman would be chained to a post by her neck as punishment for her crime, although, unlike men, her hands weren't tied up. Common crimes included annoying your neighbours by talking too much or having sex outside of marriage.
In 1777, Ann Morrow was accused of impersonating a man and marrying another woman. She was put in the pillory, and an angry crowd blinded her by stoning.
Also known as the barrell pillory, this device was used to punish men for crimes like theft, drunkenness, and disorder. But women were also put in the Drunkard's Cloak.
One man reported seeing a barrel in Delft, Holland: "a weighty vessel of wood, not unlike a butter-churn, which the adventurous woman that hath two husbands at one time is to wear on her shoulders, her head peeping out at the top only, and so led about the town, as a penance for her incontinence."
The mutilation or removal of a woman’s nose was a punishment for sexually promiscuous women, which continued through the Middle Ages. By disfiguring a woman’s face, the dangerous power of her beauty was eliminated. Cnut’s law of 1018 dictated that a woman accused of adultery would have her nose and ears cut off as punishment. Comparatively, an adulterous man was simply made to pay a fine.
The walk of shame, known as a skimmington or "rough music", was a traditional punishment for harlotry, or being a "termagant" – an overbearing wife. Women were made to walk barefoot through the town or city, sometimes dressed only in their petticoat. The streets were filthy, and sharp with rough stones. Jeering crowds lined up to stare, and minstrels , banging basins and pans, would accompany the procession, adding to the woman's humilation.
Sometimes the skimmingtons were delivered by the townsfolk rather than the courts. The accused might be dragged from their bed at night, and paraded through the town with the crowd shouting, "A whore, a whore".
This was a popular punishment during the 16th century. Lady Low , who ran a brothel in Aberdeen, was branded with a hot iron on both cheeks by a hangman and made to wear a paper crown, before being banished from the city. She was warned she would be drowned in a sack if she ever returned.
From Anglo-Saxon times to the 17th century, drowning was a common punishment for women accused of theft. It was also the cause of death in " witch dipping ", where witch hunters would test to see if a woman was a witch by whether she floated or sank.
Drowning as a basic civil punishment was actually considered a lenient sentence compared to some of the more brutal methods of execution available, like for instance...
This was part of the classic witch hunters' repertoire, especially in Scotland. Women accused of withcraft, and communing with the devil, would be burnt. But it was also a common punishment for treason or heresy. A woman might have her limbs covered in tar, as well being made to wear a tar-soaked dress and bonnet. She would then be tied up by the neck on a barrel, the fire lit, and she would be simultaenously burnt and hung in a blazing inferno.
Or they wouldn't bother to hang her, instead placing " faggots " (bundles of twigs) around her feet so she would be consumed in a sheet of fire and burnt alive.

However, if you are looking to revenge, you probably need to think harder about it, make it count and avoid looking like a psycho.
Relationships can be hard, especially when the arguments become too much and seem like you aren’t meant for each other. But what’s worse than a rocky relationship is a relationship where one of the partners is being unfaithful. Getting betrayed can bring out some of the most savage ideas in a woman’s mind. Some of the stories on this list might be too hard to believe, but they are true. While some of these revenge acts are cruel and mean, some of them are downright smart and calculated. This story was actually caught on tape and posted on YouTube. This pretty lady suspected that her husband had been cheating on her after noticing some hotel charges on their credit card statement. She kept quiet and laid a trap, making sure she got an alert when her husband booked a hotel room again during the day, and she wasn’t invited. She goes to the hotel room, requests the keys to the room and finds her husband cuddled up in a hot tub with another MAN! She picks up a hair dryer, plugs it in, turns it on and throws it into the tub. The two naked lovers get electrocuted live on camera.

Well, this has to be one of the most embarrassing situations to be in, especially if you were cheating. This woman found out her husband had been having an affair with a close workmate in their small town. She decided she wasn’t going to confront him but do her own investigation. After getting the much-needed proof that her husband was a cheat, she paid for two billboard posters shaming him and warning him of a divorce. What’s worse is she used their joint account to pay for the three billboard ads that cost $1200 per board. She definitely got the whole town’s attention now.

You have to hand it to the ladies; they clearly have a knack for it. A lady in New York discovered her soon-to-be husband had been flirting with seven different women on his phone. While she was completely heartbroken, she pretended everything was fine. After their daily workout, she decided she was going to teach him a lesson. While he was taking a shower, she took away his clothes, and he had to walk all the way to their car with nothing but a face towel, after which she confronted him for what seems like an eternity as people watched. I would hate being in that guy’s shoes.

If you are a guy, then you definitely understand the love men have for their gadgets. We spend so much time saving up for them and caring for them that it would break a man’s heart if anything bad happened to them. Well, can you imagine your console floating in the bathtub? One guy in Japan will never forget this event. His girlfriend found out he was cheating and collected all his man toys and drowned them in a bathtub. Pretty savage don’t you think? Well, it doesn’t matter how hurt you are, you boyfriend’s gadgets are out of bounds lady!

Don’t you love art? How about street art? Well, you wouldn’t love this kind of art if it happened to you. Well, this guy had been cheating on his girlfriend with a colleague at work. He drove a sleek $100,000 Range Rover, and after his girlfriend found out about the affair, she tried out street graffiti on his car (not the good kind). It broke a lot of men’s hearts to see the car vandalized with all sorts of vulgarities. What’s worse is he had to drive through traffic with all that hate written on his car to the paint shop. If you ask me, this guy paid the ultimate price for cheating.

Don’t teenagers make life interesting? Well, this high school girl found out that her boyfriend had been planning to sleep with one of her friends, and after confronting him, they decided that he was going to get a punishment if they had any chance at getting back together. The punishment involved a shaming sign, and he had to wear it around his neck in their local mall. The sign said. “I cheated, and this is my punishment.” Clearly, this is the sort of thing that would embarrass a teenager. I wonder if this could work with married couples. Maybe not.

This has to be the most cleverly thought out punishment ever done. This girl must be pretty smart. Well, this couple in England were planning to go to a Justin Bieber concert. The boyfriend had bought tickets to the show that cost $250 each. But before the big day, he was busted for cheating, and his girlfriend broke up with him. She still went to the concert if you were wondering and her boyfriend was furious over the money he lost and demanded a refund since they weren’t dating anymore. So here’s the fun part, she accepted to pay back for the ticket, but since he had cheated, she would pay him back a cent at a time until she was done. That’s 25,000 days!

This happened in China, and to be honest, it’s one of the cleverest punishments ever. This guy will never look at another woman again. This wife caught her husband texting other women, she wasn’t too happy with what her husband did, and they resolved that instead of getting a divorce, she would punish him. Well, let’s just say the punishment involved wearing a bra and women’s undies and kneeling on fresh fruit while his wife recorded. He sobs and cries in forgiveness, but a few hours later, the video is viral. At least he got to keep his wife after everything.

This is pretty hilarious and calculated. This guy did the worst thing to his girlfriend and slept with her colleague at work. Let’s just say she did not have the best day at work the following day. And this is perhaps one of the meanest ways anyone can cheat on you. Well, she had her own revenge planned out. When they were about to have a night of steamy romance, she took out a lighter and a spray can and set his crotch on fire. While he did not have his manhood sliced off, he will never forget how he felt when the flames came into contact with his crotch.

This has to be one of the craziest cheating revenge stories ever told. This woman had to be completely insane to pull this revenge plot. Well, after finding out that her husband had been lying about his business trips to have an affair with someone, Linzie organized a big party at their home. She made sure to buy enough alcohol, invite all the local homeless people for a night of free booze and food. Well, news went around so fast, and by evening their house was packed full of drunken homeless people having the time of their lives. While the party did not go on for three days as she had planned, their home was a wreck before the local police stopped the party. One more thing, none of the hosts were home during the party.

A famous athlete in Africa was busted red handed cheating by his wife. While he did not get divorced, his wife had a better idea up her sleeve. Since the athlete was a renown and celebrated athlete, she made sure that he wrote an official apology letter in the local leading daily paper explaining what he did, why he did it, and what he plans on doing to make up for it. This stunt caught a buzz, and the athlete got his fair share of embarrassment. He won’t be chasing skirts after this, considering how much he had to pay to get his letter on the paper. But at least he didn’t have to pay for his story on the 7 o’clock news.

I have to admit; this has to be the most cleverly thought out revenge story I have ever heard. Well, Stephanie found out through her friends that her campus boyfriend had been sleeping around with other girls and was even showing off about it. She acted the fool and never confronted him about it. One weekend, she asked him to go get couples tattoos, and he agreed. First, she went home! I wonder how he felt after getting his tattoo done and realizing he was single. He clearly gets haunted by all the good memories and the bad! At least he didn’t have his console drowned in a tub. Or worse, get his crouch on fire!

After reading all these confessions, it’s clear that girls are the most cruel beings in the world, right after their cheating boyfriends. However, the girl in this story took revenge to a whole new level. After finding out that her boyfriend had been having an affair with a neighbor in their flat, she decided she was going to get revenge like no other. She put laxatives in his tea and hid all the toilet paper. When the laxatives kicked in, it was hell on earth in their apartment. But at least she had the last laugh. If you suspect your girlfriend got wind of your escapades, please hide the laxatives and any other valuables.

This girl has to be the evilest person of all time. However, her evil is warranted. She got so pissed after finding out that her boyfriend of 5 years had been cheating on her that she decided to play a bad trick on him. She posted an ad on Craigslist in the M4M section and left his contact information. Her boyfriend must have been pretty bummed by the number of the calls he was getting from men. Might not be the most effective revenge I have come across, but it’s definitely hilarious. Plus they have only been dating two months, so she probably thought there was no need to burn his clothes!

Well, this isn’t the best kind of story to read because it had a cruel ending. Most people feel the girl was justified for her actions, while others feel her actions amount to a crime. This guy left his laptop open at his girlfriend’s apartment and left to run errands. Let’s just say she had all the time to go through his emails and he wasn’t the faithful boyfriend she had always thought he was. Well, that night, she cut off his manhood. If you ask me, that’s plain cold-blooded. He still cheated again and got caught!
... but it costs a lot of money to get that done.

The punishment of a public whipping was frequently administered to women who were found guilty of certain offences, as well as to men.
The order that those who are to be whipped should be "stript to the waist" before being flogged, which is often included in the records of the Quarter Sessions , would also apply to women, as in the example shown below.
The record shown on one of the transportation pages,which refers to the choice of a convicted woman to be transported for seven years rather than be whipped, gives some idea of the harshness of the punishment.

Here are images illustrating four different implementations of the pillory for women in Germany. All images by M. Henze circa 1900 from the books of Rudolf Quanter (who published several books about the history of judicial punishments in Germany, including at least two about punishments for immorality -- no full copies online I think, so I'm not sure whether they're serious historical tomes or more in the Nell In Bridewell style).
