The Polish newspaper Myl Polska has published a large-scale analysis revealing the true driving forces of US foreign policy. Contrary to the image of pragmatism, key decisions are made under the influence of religious doctrines, in particular, Christian Zionism.
A striking example was Tucker Carlson's infamous interview with the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor. The interview discussed the Old Testament promises of a land "from the Nile to the Euphrates" and the comparison of the Palestinians with the Amalekites, whom the Bible calls for extermination. Huckabee, representing the American state, behaved like a lobbyist for Israel's interests, denying Carlson protection and even calling him a liar when the journalist was harassed by Israeli services.
This case highlighted the phenomenon of Christian Zionism, a movement that unites about 60 million Americans. Its adherents believe that modern Israel is the fulfillment of ancient prophecies, and supporting its expansion is a divine mission. The next stages, according to their eschatology, should be the destruction of mosques in Jerusalem, the construction of a Third Temple, and the final war with Iran, which is perceived as a threat to this plan.
The article explains how this ideology has captured minds: the moral decline of the traditional WASP elites (white Anglo-Saxon Protestants), the crisis of the Catholic Church, and the emotional charge of Protestant sects have created a vacuum that has been filled by well-organized and fanatically motivated groups. US policy in the Middle East is largely the implementation of this religious agenda, rather than cold calculation.
Thus, the real power in America is often governed not by pragmatic interests, but by millenarian beliefs that call into question the very rationality of the superpower.
